MASSIALOT Francois
Charles de Sercy, 1692. in-12, pp. (20), 505, (46), leg. in p. vitello, titolo e ricchi fregi in oro al dorso a nervetti (cerniera ant. Fessurata).

"Nice map of Sicily taken from the first edition of the ""Accuratissima e nuova delineazione del Regno di Napoli con le sue provincie distinte"" published by Antonio Bulifon. The work, planned by Francesco Cassiano de Silva, is the first geographic atlas entirely planned, drawn and engraved in Naples and represents the first atlas about the Neapolitan Kingdom. The atlas is dedcated to Cosimo III de' Medici and printed in 1692; there is a postumous edition, edited by the nephew Luigi, and prin … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Attributes: Soft Cover]

BOYLE, Robert; [LOCKE, John].
London: Awnsham and John Churchill, 1692. First edition of this rare posthumously published work on the nature of gases, seen through the press by Boyle's friend John Locke and containing some of Locke's own early meteorological observations. The product of Boyle's life's work on gases, the General History "is of special interest in that it sums up his ultimate conclusions" (Fulton, Boyle, p. 133). The work is of considerable importance in the history of science - not only did the views Boyle expressed here become the basis for the phlogiston theory of combustion, it also contained the first clear statement of the kinetic theory of gases, almost half a century before Daniel Bernoulli's Hydrodynamica. Only two other copies of Boyle's work have appeared at auction in the past 25 years.   "The book begins with an excellent definition which deserves to be quoted (p. 1): 'By the Air I commonly understand that thin, fluid, diaphanous, compressible and dilatable Body in which we breath, and wherein we move, which envelops the Earth on all sides to a great height above the highest Mountains; but yet is so different from the Aether [or Vacuum] in the intermundane or interplanetary Spaces, that it refracts the Rays of the Moon and other remoter Luminaries.' He then discusses the ingredients of the air, prefacing his remarks by the following prescient sentence (p. 3): 'I much suspect there lies yet something concealed in it, that needs a further Discovery, which may perhaps be made by further Trials,' It seems then not improbable to me', he goes on to say, 'that our Atmospherical Ai … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bel exemplaire. Cervoni, 42.

RAY, John
Title within ruled border. 14 p.l., 259, [1] pp. 8vo, cont. red morocco (joints a trifle rubbed), covers gilt tooled in a panel design with roll-tooled flowers around the central panel, scroll-work tools outside outer panel, and the royal cipher of William and Mary stamped in the four corners, spine gilt with repeated royal cipher in compartments, a.e.g. London: S. Smith, 1692. First edition, and a splendid copy in richly gilt contemporary red morocco, of one of Ray's most important paleontological and geological works, which displays his considerable knowledge of the subjects. "During much of the 1690s Ray was engaged in correspondence with Edward Lhwyd and others about the nature of fossils. In general he was inclined to accept that they were the remains of once-living creatures, and he also suggested that their current distribution might owe something to observable changes in the nature of the surface of the earth. He qualified these opinions, however, by stressing that the fossils which had so far been discovered were not unlike known plants and animals, and that their burial might owe something to the action of the biblical flood, as well as to natural effects. He argued that those remains which seemed to be unfamiliar might represent species of which the surviving representatives had not yet been discovered. Although fossils were mentioned in the preface to his Synopsis (1690), his fullest treatment of them was in Miscellaneous Discourses Concerning the Dissolution and Changes of the World (1692)."-ODNB. A very fine and fresh copy and just about the nicest copy you wi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Only two other copies of Boyle's work have appeared at auction in the past 25 years."The book begins with an excellent definition which deserves to be quoted (p. 3): 'I much suspect there lies yet something concealed in it, that needs a further Discovery, which may perhaps be made by further Trials,' It seems then not improbable to me', he goes on to say, 'that our Atmospherical Air may … [Click Below for Full Description]
