Arnout Leers, The Hague. 1692. DE HOOGHE, ROMEYN). GOVERT BIDLOO.The Hague., Chez Arnout Leers., 1692. Folio. Original marbled calf binding. There are 16 single and double page engraved illustrations including the title page. Landwehr, R. de Hooghe, 80; Vinet 752, Hoefer 147, Landwehr, Splendid Ceremonies, 147. The account of the arrival of King William III and the reception in the Hague gives the impression that the author's text closely followed the illustrations by de Hooghe. (Landwehr). All of the bibliographies concur that this work is one of the chefs d'oeuvre of de Hooghe. "One of his best books" (Hofer, Baroque Book illustration, 47) and is concurred by Didot, 951. This book represents a height of festivities begun by the Italians at Mantua more than a century before in the triumphant new era which began with the abdication of James II in favor of William of Orange. After the Battle of the Boyne William traveled to Holland to seek the safety of an alliance against the French and this book celebrates that visit. The Dutch text was issued in 1691, a French text in 1692. In this French edition the plates were printed at the same time as the Dutch therefore they are first state. A very fine copy with beautiful impressions of all the plates in the original calf binding. One of the most beautiful Dutch baroque festival books, superbly illustrated with 15 plates by Romeyn de Hooghe, the great chronicler of his age. The frontispiece was commissioned for this reception. This edition, after the Dutch edition, has the introduction of Jean Tronchin de Breuil. There are unnotice … [Click Below for Full Description]

[ Tyrrell, James. ]
London: Printed, and are to be sold by Richard Baldwin.. 1692 First edition. Full modern antique-style calf. Covers panelled in blind, gilt spine with burgundy and brown morocco labels. Octavo. With " strip cut away across top blank margin of title-page. Early owner's ink signature on title. A little light browning, but overall a very good copy in an attractive binding. James Tyrrell (1642-1718) was a political theorist and historian, best known for his Patriarcha non Monarcha (1681), which advocates the principle of a limited monarchy and disputes the doctrines of passive obedience and non-resistance. Tyrrell was also a close friend of John Locke's, and many see the influence of Tyrrell's thought on Locke's important Two Treatises of Government (P.M.M. 163). The present work is an abridged English translation of Richard Cumberland's (1632–1718) De legibus naturae (1672), which was produced with an eye to vindicating the law of nature against Hobbism. Tyrrell's long preface drew on Locke's unpublished work, Essays on the Law of Nature. It places Locke in the modern school of natural jurisprudence inaugurated by Hugo Grotius. Tyrrell sees this tradition in opposition to Hobbist Epicureanism. "Tyrrell's central axiom is that natural law is reducible to the duty to seek the common good of rational beings. His lengthy preface points towards two strands in eighteenth-century ethical thought: the hyper-rationalist insistence that morality can be reduced to mathematical propositions, and the modernized Stoicism which sought to show that morality was in harmony with both natu … [Click Below for Full Description]

First edition. This work was first translated into English in 1693. "At this time, a major preoccupation of the Catholic Church and its China mission was to discover a safe land route from Europe to Peking through central Asia. This was due to the large numbers of out-going clergy who perished tragically every year at sea." (Ames & Love, p. 202). "The last decade of the century saw the publication of the accounts of several overland travelers to China and their destinations of China's inner-Asian neighbors. The story of the Jesuit Philippe Avril's attempt to establish a route across Russia for the safe passage of missionaries to China appeared in 1692 and includes descriptions of both the routes from Moscow to China and the peoples on China's frontiers. Avril, himself, however, did not travel beyond Moscow, and his descriptions ther … [Click Below for Full Description]

BOYLE, Robert; [LOCKE, John].
London: Awnsham and John Churchill, 1692. First edition. First edition of this rare posthumously published work on the nature of gases, seen through the press by Boyle's friend John Locke and containing some of Locke's own early meteorological observations. The product of Boyle's life's work on gases, the General History "is of special interest in that it sums up his ultimate conclusions" (Fulton, Boyle, p. 133). The work is of considerable importance in the history of science - not only did the views Boyle expressed here become the basis for the phlogiston theory of combustion, it also contained the first clear statement of the kinetic theory of gases, almost half a century before Daniel Bernoulli's Hydrodynamica. Only two other copies of Boyle's work have appeared at auction in the past 25 years."The book begins with an excellent definition which deserves to be quoted (p. 1): 'By the Air I commonly understand that thin, fluid, diaphanous, compressible and dilatable Body in which we breath, and wherein we move, which envelops the Earth on all sides to a great height above the highest Mountains; but yet is so different from the Aether [or Vacuum] in the intermundane or interplanetary Spaces, that it refracts the Rays of the Moon and other remoter Luminaries.' He then discusses the ingredients of the air, prefacing his remarks by the following prescient sentence (p. 3): 'I much suspect there lies yet something concealed in it, that needs a further Discovery, which may perhaps be made by further Trials,' It seems then not improbable to me', he goes on to say, 'that our Atmosp … [Click Below for Full Description]
