[ Tyrrell, James. ]
London: Printed, and are to be sold by Richard Baldwin.. 1692 First edition. Full modern antique-style calf. Covers panelled in blind, gilt spine with burgundy and brown morocco labels. Octavo. With " strip cut away across top blank margin of title-page. Early owner's ink signature on title. A little light browning, but overall a very good copy in an attractive binding. James Tyrrell (1642-1718) was a political theorist and historian, best known for his Patriarcha non Monarcha (1681), which advocates the principle of a limited monarchy and disputes the doctrines of passive obedience and non-resistance. Tyrrell was also a close friend of John Locke's, and many see the influence of Tyrrell's thought on Locke's important Two Treatises of Government (P.M.M. 163). The present work is an abridged English translation of Richard Cumberland's (1632–1718) De legibus naturae (1672), which was produced with an eye to vindicating the law of nature against Hobbism. Tyrrell's long preface drew on Locke's unpublished work, Essays on the Law of Nature. It places Locke in the modern school of natural jurisprudence inaugurated by Hugo Grotius. Tyrrell sees this tradition in opposition to Hobbist Epicureanism. "Tyrrell's central axiom is that natural law is reducible to the duty to seek the common good of rational beings. His lengthy preface points towards two strands in eighteenth-century ethical thought: the hyper-rationalist insistence that morality can be reduced to mathematical propositions, and the modernized Stoicism which sought to show that morality was in harmony with both natu … [Click Below for Full Description]

First edition. This work was first translated into English in 1693. "At this time, a major preoccupation of the Catholic Church and its China mission was to discover a safe land route from Europe to Peking through central Asia. This was due to the large numbers of out-going clergy who perished tragically every year at sea." (Ames & Love, p. 202). "The last decade of the century saw the publication of the accounts of several overland travelers to China and their destinations of China's inner-Asian neighbors. The story of the Jesuit Philippe Avril's attempt to establish a route across Russia for the safe passage of missionaries to China appeared in 1692 and includes descriptions of both the routes from Moscow to China and the peoples on China's frontiers. Avril, himself, however, did not travel beyond Moscow, and his descriptions ther … [Click Below for Full Description]

BOYLE, Robert; [LOCKE, John].
London: Awnsham and John Churchill, 1692. First edition. First edition of this rare posthumously published work on the nature of gases, seen through the press by Boyle's friend John Locke and containing some of Locke's own early meteorological observations. The product of Boyle's life's work on gases, the General History "is of special interest in that it sums up his ultimate conclusions" (Fulton, Boyle, p. 133). The work is of considerable importance in the history of science - not only did the views Boyle expressed here become the basis for the phlogiston theory of combustion, it also contained the first clear statement of the kinetic theory of gases, almost half a century before Daniel Bernoulli's Hydrodynamica. Only two other copies of Boyle's work have appeared at auction in the past 25 years."The book begins with an excellent definition which deserves to be quoted (p. 1): 'By the Air I commonly understand that thin, fluid, diaphanous, compressible and dilatable Body in which we breath, and wherein we move, which envelops the Earth on all sides to a great height above the highest Mountains; but yet is so different from the Aether [or Vacuum] in the intermundane or interplanetary Spaces, that it refracts the Rays of the Moon and other remoter Luminaries.' He then discusses the ingredients of the air, prefacing his remarks by the following prescient sentence (p. 3): 'I much suspect there lies yet something concealed in it, that needs a further Discovery, which may perhaps be made by further Trials,' It seems then not improbable to me', he goes on to say, 'that our Atmosp … [Click Below for Full Description]

John Ray 1627-1705
- London, Printed for Samuel Smith, at the Prince's Arms in St. Paul's Church Yeard, 1692 Octavo 7 x 4 inches A-S, contents (collated a-a2), s2 mislabeled r2, s3-s6. complete Third Edition This copy is bound in full contemporary calf very nicely rebacked maintaining the old spine. "In his discussion of the Noachian Deluge, Ray revealed his considerable knowledge of paleontology and geology. In the much-debated issue of 'formed stones' (fossils), he supported the view that they were organic remains resulting from divine intervention at the Flood."--Norman Library 1795. Ray is a true Homo Universalis, which in the case of John Ray. is a truism indeed. 'Between 1660 and 1671 he made many trips throughout England, and one trip to Europe, to collect plants, animals, and rocks. He also did experimental work in embryology and plant physiology; among other things, he also proved that the wood of a living tree conducts water. His research received so much renown that Ray was inducted into the newly-formed Royal Society of London, one of the world's first scientific societies, in 1667. Poor health eventually restricted his travels, and he spent the last decades of his life corresponding with the leading scientists of his time, such as Oldenburg, Lhwyd, Lister, and Hooke, and writing book after book on language, theology and natural history" (UCMP Berkeley biogr.). Of the Physico-theological discourses this is the third edition, revised by the author. It was first published as Miscellaneous Discourses Concerning the Dissolution and Changes of the World (1692). It was then reworked and … [Click Below for Full Description]

After publishing several general atlases himself he became the associate of Pierre Mariette, a publisher of prints. In 1647 Sanson accused the Jesuit Philippe Labbe of plagiarizing him in his Pharus Galliae Antiquae; in 1648 he lost his eldest son Nicolas, killed during the Fronde. Among the friends of his later years was the great Condé. He died in Paris on 7 July 1667. Two younger sons, Adrien (d. 1708) and Guillaume (d. 1703), succeeded him as geographers to the king.In 1692 Hubert Jaillot collected Sanson's maps in an Atlas nouveau. Photolithography with original colour (Very Good, slithtla ag-toned, tiny tears in margins) 54 x 41 cm (21.2 x 16.1 inches), 1692. [Russia, second half of the 19th century]. A rare 19th century photolithoraphed lubok (Russian popular broadside) with original colour ahows four scenes from the life of Jesus, accompanied with figures of sibyls from ancient Greece. - A rare lubok with original colour shows five Orthodox icons with scenes from life of Jesus, each accompanied by a figure of a Sibyl, predicting the event. The sibyls were women believed were oracles in ancient Greece. Some prophesies were later interpreted by Christian authors as predicting the coming of the savior Jesus Christ. Lubki: Prints for the Russian Masses - Lubok (??????; Lubki, plural) were extremely important elements of Russian poplar visual culture from the second half of the 17th Century until the Russian Revolution. They are broadside prints usually featuring simple graphics, often accompanied by explanatory text. They focused on a variety of topics including, sacred religious icons, pre-Christian Pagan imagery, folk tales, satire, political propaganda, and humour (which sometimes crossed the line into the ribald), amongst other subjects. Importantly, lubki were amongst the only Russian prints targeted towards the lower and middle classes. They were cheaply produced, and thus affordable, featuring narratives generally comprehensible by images alone (for the benefit of the illiterate), while the text was usually written in vernacular language, accessible to everyman. In this sense, they were the fore … [Click Below for Full Description]
