        Essays on several subjects

Richard Bently, London 1692 - Second edition, small 8vo, pp. [4], 178; full contemporary sheep, 18th- century calf gilt-lettered spine laid down, red morocco gilt spine label; armorial bookplate of Strickland Freeman Esq. dated 1810 mounted to front pastedown; edges and hinges rubbed, else very good and sound. DNB II, p. 719: "[Thomas Pope Blount's] 'Essays on several Subjects,'.is the only work in which he has an opportunity of displaying his individuality as a writer. The essays in the first edition numbered in seven in all. The first illustrates the proposition that interest governs the world, and that popery is nothing but an invention of priests to get money; the second is on the great mischief and prejudice of learning; the third treats of education and custom, lamenting that as children are apt to believe everything, when they grow up they are apt to settle in their first impressions; in the fourth, on the respect due to the ancients, the conclusion is arrived at that we ought not to enslave ourselves too much to their opinions; the fifth answers in the negative the question as to whether the men of the present age are inferior to those of former ages either in respect of virtue, learning, or long life; the sixth demonstrates that the passions are our best servants, but our worst masters; and the seventh attributes the variety of opinions to the uncertainty of human knowledge." An eighth essay would be added to the third impression, concerning religion, and coming to the conclusion that the God men image is "a picture of their own complexions". Wing B3349.         Fine mezzotint engraving of the famous castrato mezzo-soprano by Edward Kirkall (1692-1750) after the painting by Joseph Goupy (?-1782)

. The singer is depicted half-length in wig, coat, and west, with his hat under his left arm. 319 x 224 mm. A fine impression on laid paper. Remnants of mounting paper to corners of verso; slightly rubbed; trimmed to just within plate mark. In very good condition overall.. Senesino was a leading singer in the operas of Handel, Bononcini and Porpora in London. "Senesino's quality as an artist may be estimated from the series of superb parts Handel composed for him. Of his 20 roles in Handel's operas, 17 were original: Muzio Scevola, Floridante, Ottone, Guido in Flavio, Julius Caesar, Andronico in Tamerlano, Bertarido in Rodelinda, Luceius in Scipione and the title roles in Alessandro, Admeto, Riccardo Primo, Siroe, Tolomeo, Poro, Ezio, Sosarme and Orlando. He also sang Radamisto, Arsace in Partenope and Rinaldo, with earlier music supplemented or transposed. His compass in Handel was narrow (g to e at its widest, but the g appears very rarely, and many of his parts, especially in later years, do not go above d ), yet he was equally renowned for brilliant and taxing coloratura in heroic arias and expressive mezza voce in slow pieces."

Germania Parte Occidentale, Dedicata Al Reuerendissimo Padre D. Serafino Pasolino Nella Congreg Lateranense

1692 - Germania Parte Occidentale, Dedicata Al Reuerendissimo Padre D. Serafino Pasolino Nella Congreg Lateranense Detailed map of Western Europe by Vincenzo Coronelli, showing the western portion of the Holy Roman Empire. Includes regions of northern Italy, Switzerland, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. The French region of Normandy is in the eastern section of the map, the towns of Lyon, France to Como and Brescia, Italy, are shown along the lower portion, and the towns of Ulm, Rotenberg, Gottingen and Lubeck, Germany are shown along the east edge. A decorative title cartouche is at the upper left corner, and an additional cartouche with a distance key is at the bottom left. The map is dedicated to Serafino Pasolino, an Italian abbot. Accompanying text with 2 town view illustrations of Kiel, Germany and the Island of Gotland, Sweden are on the verso. This is the left portion of a two part map, the other portion of this map is listed in the auction as well. Coronelli was both a cleric and an encyclopedist, with a particular interest in geography and cartography. In 1681 Coronelli served as Royal Cartographer to King Louis XIV in Paris, gaining special access to the most current records on world geography sent in from the colonies, and provided by the French Academy of Sciences. Coronelli returned to Venice in 1684 and founded the Accademia Cosmografica degli Argonauti, a geographical society with membership drawn from the aristocracy and church hierarchy, and a year later he was appointed Cosmographer to the Republic of Venice. He also started a successful publishing career, and was sole author or contributor to over 140 titles and produced several hundred maps, either printed separately or as parts of atlases. By the end of the 17th century, Coronelli was perhaps the most famous map publisher in Europe and received constant requests from his contemporaries for information that would enable them to bring their atlases up to date. CORONELLI, V Venice, 1692 762 x 520 mm No color Some wrinkling and discoloration along left edge. A small puncture, approximately .1/2 inch in diameter, is in the top paper margin.

A Treatise on the Difference betwixt the Temporal and Eternal. - English Language.

Presumed London. No Publisher given. Pre- 1692 - Pre-1692 English Edition, possibly earlier. (See main description below). The first edition was printed in Spanish in 1672. VG. HB. Recent quality rebind black deckle leather, front has blind impressed decorative border. Vertical spine title gilt on green leather panel. Spine has 5 raised bands with single gilt line on either side of raised bands. New end papers expertly fitted. 12.5 x 18.5cm tall. 589pp. WH. Pages evenly age browned, however text is clearly readable, edges age browned. Title page is missing. The volume is dedicated to The Most Excellent Majesty of Catherine Queen of Great Britain. (formerly Princess Catherine of Braganza, daughter of the King of Portugal), wife of King Charles II of Great Britain who reigned 1660-1685. The Dedication is initialled J.W. This first English language edition was translated by Sir Vivian Mullineaux, Knight of the Realm, (see page 2 of the Dedication). In this era it was considered unwise to publicise the name of the publishers or printers who were willing to produce catholic books. King Charles II died in 1685, and Queen Catherine returned to Lisbon, Portugal, in 1692 after the death of her husband the King. From which information one may assume that this edition was presented to her either before the death of the King in 1685, or before her departure for Lisbon in 1692, as the Dedication refers to her as Catherine Queen of Great Britain. Queen Catherine died in Lisbon on 31st December, 1705. On page 110 there is a sepia ink handwritten inscription in the leading edge margin, 'Thomas Fish, March 18th, 1719' a previous owner of the volume. Page 358 has the inscription 'John Fisher, his book, God give him the grace to look'. Throughout the book there are comments in the same handwriting and ink. The margins contain printed references to sources used by Neiremberg. The first and last page have ragged edges which do not affect the text. Page 410 and last page have the name of Andrew Fish, presumably the son of Thomas Fish, and the name of Ellinor Hann, annoted 'Meditation', presumably a subsequent owner, and the reverse of the last page has the name of Mrs. Mary Smith, of Hillhead, Berwick-on-Tweed. The volume draws on comments and extracts from many illustrious writers down through the ages on both points of view of the differences discussed in this scarce edition of Nieremberg's treatise. Tight copy, in remarkable condition for age. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
