"La Quintinie was one of the great French agriculturists of the 17th century. He was also interested in horticulture and gardens, and Louis XIV felt his work was so important that he created for him the post of Directeur General des Potagers Royaux. Though La Quintinie held this post with distinction for forty years, his modesty was such that he published nothing of his own during his lifetime. This was rectified shortly after his death when the Instructions Pour les Jardins Fruitiers et Potagers was brought out in 1690. It was so practical and filled such a need that it went into many editions " (Hunt).

        La poëtique EDITION ORIGINALE

à Paris: chez Claude Barbin, 1692. Fine. chez Claude Barbin, à Paris 1692, relié. - Original rare Edition. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information!

Paris, Antoine Dezallier, 1692 - Folio (440 x 290 mm), pp [viii] 224 [8], with engraved vignette with coat-of-arms on title, two engraved section titles, engraved portrait of du Molinet, and 45 engraved plates of which 5 are double-page, and numerous engraved and woodcut headpieces and initials; faint marginal waterstain, barely noticeable, on a few leaves, corner of one section title a bit frayed, a very attractive copy in contemporary Dutch vellum, panels and medallions in blind on sides. £8250First edition, a rare large-paper copy, of Du Molinet's attractive catalogue of his collection, which formed an annexe to the library of the abbey of Sainte-Geneviève, Paris. This is the first large-paper copy I have come across.Father Du Molinet (ca 1620 - 1687) writes in the preface that he sought to assemble rare and curious objects of interest to the sciences and history, both ancient and natural. He then goes on to describe the contents of the various components of the 'cabinet'. His collection was enlarged by the acquisition of the major part of Fabri de Peiresc's collection. The first part of the work is devoted to antiquities: Christian, Egyptian and Roman; funerary objects; weights and measures; coins; medals; engraved gems; talismans and seals (including a section on Gnostic seals); and lamps. The second part is devoted to natural history objects, divided amongst birds; animals, fish; fruits; plants, shells; stones; and minerals.'The arrangement of the collection is carefully described by du Molinet. Facing the entrance was an alcove with clothes and weapons from Persia, India and America and above this were ranged three tiers of urns, votive objects, lamps, sacrificial instruments and other antiquities. The alcove was flanked with two cupboards of petrifactions, Indian birds, animals and a collection of footwear from various countries, and above these "buffets" were further shelves of figures, Chinese vases, branches of red, white and black coral and other marine growths. The other three sides of the room contained a dozen walnut cabinets housing the medal collection, with an explanatory book listing over four hundred pieces in the large bronze series. The collection included Greek and Hebrew silver coins, Papal medals and those of the French Kings and other European monarchs, as well as jetons, talismans and coins from China, Japan, India, Siam and elsewhere. Other cabinets contained scientific instruments, semi-precious stones and minerals, shells and rare animals and fishes. The walls were hung with paintings including a series of twenty-two pastel portraits of the Kings of France. Ertinger's excellent plates illustrate the room which housed the collection and also two large views of the interior of the library, with a view of Paris through the open window' (Grinke, From Wunderkammer to museum, p 28).See MacGregor, Tradescant's Rarities pp 83-4.Cobres I p 200 n 6; Grinke 7; Murray 1 218 and 3 80; Sinkankas 1803

["Logic: or The Art of Reasoning"]. Logica: sive, Ars Ratiocinandi. [and] Ontologia; sive de Ente in Genere. [WITH]: Pneumatologia seu de Spiritibus

London: Awnsham & Churchill, 1692. First Edition. Very good antiquarian condition. 12mo. Two parts in one volume. [12], 182, [2], [8], 199 [i.e. 190] pp. Contemporary English sprinkled calf, expertly rebacked, original endleaves preserved (browned and a bit brittle; inner hinges strengthened with brown paper). As commonly, this early English "trade" binding did not have endpapers bound in. Title-page with 1" tear between two lines of text (not affecting any words). Blind-stamps of the now defunct Theological Institute of Connecticut on first and final leaves. Jean Le Clerc (1657-1736), a Swiss Protestant by birth, was one of the outstanding figures in Anglo-Dutch intellectual history. A prolific author, he edited three great encyclopedias comprising eighty-three volumes which were very influential in the development of the Age of Reason. The present work was written as a textbook for his own students and was used at Cambridge as a standard text for many years, going through five editions by 1716. Part I is prefaced by a four-page dedication to Robert Boyle; Part II begins with a four-page dedication to John Locke. (Le Clerc was also the author of the first biography of Locke. The author's argument throughout generally follows that of Locke. Part III is distinctly anti-Cartesian. Numerous early ownership inscriptions, the most interesting (to us) is that "Paul Droilhet" who has inscribed the verso of title-page; this individual may have been the Huguenot Elder in the French Reformed Church in New York City (died ca. 1712). The title-page was inscribed at an early date by W. Smith, who added "NY" and (a price?) "4/-" Wing L-821.

Les Avantures de Jacques Sadeur dans la découverte et le voiage de la Terre Australe. Contenant les coutumes & les moeurs des Australiens.

Claude Barbin, Paris 1692 - Octavo, title slightly stained but a good copy in contemporary mottled calf, spine panelled in gilt; fine armorial bookplate on front pastedown, front flyleaf removed. A revised edition, prepared by François Raguenet, possibly from a manuscript by Foigny himself. The dangerously heretical nature of the first edition has been tempered here by concentrating on the fabulous rather than the social and political. One of the earliest and best of all imaginary voyages to Australia, Foigny's book refers to the inhabitants of his Terre Australe as "Australiens" - the first time that the term was used to describe an inhabitant of the southern continent.Foigny (c.1650-1692) had a turbulent life. A promising career as a Franciscan monk was scotched by his 'licentious behaviour' and he was forced to flee to Geneva and Protestantism. The narrative purports to be the dying gift of the sailor Sadeur to an anonymous narrator. Twice kidnapped and four times shipwrecked, Sadeur only survives when he is plucked from the sea by a gigantic winged monster which fortuitously drops him on the shores of Western Australia. Ashore, his luck continues: as an hermaphrodite himself (the Jesuit priests called him male as a convenience) Sadeur is especially acceptable to the hermaphroditic, asexual society that he discovers. The Australians' utopian rejection of the body is responsible for their society's rationality and harmony. In this world Sadeur's curiosity and levity about the topic is considered very de trop, yet worse his 'propensity to unseemly arousal' (Rees). As in many imaginary voyages - Swift's Houhnyhyms, and their debates about the extermination of the Yahoos represent perhaps the best known example - the perfection of the community tolerates no impurities. Thus, the otherwise detached Australians are involved in a brutal war of annihilation with the Fundian 'half-men': crucially, Sadeur cannot stomach the war, a fact only complicated when 'bored by decades of sexless bliss, rational discussions and indoctrinations, athletic exercises and peaceful gardening ? [Sadeur] falls for a female among the enemy' (Friederich). This important work, which combines several major traditions, is 'a major utopia, rich in satire and iconoclasm' (Gibson) and presents a narrative response to the strict regimentation of the utopia, particularly in the context of the Pacific (Spate comments: 'in part at least a send-up of Quiros').Although relatively more common than the 1676 and 1701 editions, this is still a very rare work on the market.         Historia inquisitionis: cui subjungitur liber sententiarum inquisitionis tholosanae ab anno Christi MCCCVII ad annum MCCCXXIII [From the personal library of Jose Maria de Melo, Titular Bishop of the Algarve, Inquisitor General in the Kingdom of Portugal and its dominions, and Confessor of Her Majesty Queen Maria I]

Apud Henricum Westenium, Amstelodami (Amsterdam) 1692 - Folio. [16], 384, [12]pp (Index), [8], 397, [19]pp. Original spotted calf with gold lettering and tooling on spine. Raised bands. All edges red. Marbled endpapers. Previous owner's sticker (Jose Maria de Mello*) on inside of front cover. Vignette on red and black lettered title page. Decorative initials. This remarkable work consists of a record of sentences given by the Inquisition of Toulouse (Southwestern France) between 1307 and 1328, and is preceded by an account of the origin and methods of the Inquisition. Van Limborch's "Liber Sententiarum Inquisitionis Tolosanae" is still considered important nowadays for its meticulous transcription of a manuscript by the Dominican inquisitor Bernard Gui long regarded as lost forever, but rediscovered in London (British Library, ms. Add. 4697). This volume is complete with its 10 striking engravings in 9 plates (including 4 folded). 2 of the plates are signed by Adriaan Schoonebeek**. Heavy rubbing along edges of binding. Hinges starting, but covers still attached. Moderate and sporadic foxing and age-toning throughout. Text in Latin. Binding in overall fair, interior in good+, plates in very good condition. About the author: Philipp van Limborch (1633-1712) was professor of theology at the seminary of the remonstrants in Amsterdam. His most important work, "Institutiones theologiae christianae, ad praxin pietatis et promotionem pacis, christianae unice directae" (Amsterdam, 1686, 5th ed., 1735), is a full and clear exposition of the system of Simon Episcopius and Stephan Curcellaeus. The fourth edition (1715) included a posthumous "Relatio historica de origine et progressu controversiarum in foederato Belgio de praedestinatione." Limborch also wrote "De veritate religionis Christianae amica collatio cum erudito Judaeo" (Gouda, 1687) (the "Erudite Jew" in question was Isaac Orobio de Castro); "Historia Inquisitionis" (1692), in four books prefixed to the Liber Sententiarum Inquisitionis Tolosanae (1308–1323); "Commentarius in Acta Apostolorum et in Epistolas ad Romanos et ad Hebraeos" (Rotterdam, 1711). An English translation of the Theologia was published in 1702 by William Jones (A Complete System or Body of Divinity, both Speculative and Practical, founded on Scripture and Reason, London, 1702); and a translation of the Historia Inquisitionis, by Samuel Chandler, with a large introduction concerning the rise and progress of persecution and the real and pretended causes of it prefixed, appeared in 1731. See Herzog-Hauck, Realencyklopädie. Philipp van Limborch was a friend of John Locke. * Jose Maria de Mello (1756-1818) was the son of Francisco de Mello, feral chief of the kingdom of Portugal. He entered the Congregation of the Oratory in 1777, and was chosen by Queen Maria I to be the Bishop of the Algarve in 1787. He hold this position until 1788, when he was appointed Chief Inquisitor and confessor of the sovereign after the death of archbishop Inácio de S. Caetano. Jose Maria de Mello has been accused of having a bad influence on the queen, advising her to follow a reactionary policy. ** Adriaan Schoonebeek (1661-1705) was a Dutch engraver, and cartographer. He studied engraving under Romeyn de Hooghe (1676-79). Schoonebeek taught etching to Peter the Great during his Great Embassy to Holland (1697) and was invited to Russia to work on commissions and train Russian artists (1698). He headed the engraving workshop at the Moscow Armoury. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Thus, the otherwise detached Australians are involved in a brutal war of annihilation with the Fundian 'half-men': crucially, Sadeur cannot stomach the war, a fact only complicated when 'bored by decades of sexless bliss, rational discussions and indoctrinations, athletic exercises and peaceful gardening ...
