Logic: or The Art of Reasoning"]. Logica: sive, Ars Ratiocinandi. [and] Ontologia; sive de Ente in Genere. [WITH]: Pneumatologia seu de Spiritibus

Awnsham & Churchill, London 1692 - 12mo. Two parts in one volume. [12], 182, [2], [8], 199 [i.e. 190] pp. Contemporary English sprinkled calf, expertly rebacked, original endleaves preserved (browned and a bit brittle; inner hinges strengthened with brown paper). As commonly, this early English "trade" binding did not have endpapers bound in. Title-page with 1" tear between two lines of text (not affecting any words). Blind-stamps of the now defunct Theological Institute of Connecticut on first and final leaves. Jean Le Clerc (1657-1736), a Swiss Protestant by birth, was one of the outstanding figures in Anglo-Dutch intellectual history. A prolific author, he edited three great encyclopedias comprising eighty-three volumes which were very influential in the development of the Age of Reason. The present work was written as a textbook for his own students and was used at Cambridge as a standard text for many years, going through five editions by 1716. Part I is prefaced by a four-page dedication to Robert Boyle; Part II begins with a four-page dedication to John Locke. (Le Clerc was also the author of the first biography of Locke. The author's argument throughout generally follows that of Locke. Part III is distinctly anti-Cartesian. Numerous early ownership inscriptions, the most interesting (to us) is that "Paul Droilhet" who has inscribed the verso of title-page; this individual may have been the Huguenot Elder in the French Reformed Church in New York City (died ca. 1712). The title-page was inscribed at an early date by W. Smith, who added "NY" and (a price?) "4/-" Wing L-821. Very good antiquarian condition [Attributes: First Edition]

Les Avantures de Jacques Sadeur dans la découverte et le voiage de la Terre Australe. Contenant les coutumes & les moeurs des Australiens.

Claude Barbin, Paris 1692 - Octavo, title slightly stained but a good copy in contemporary mottled calf, spine panelled in gilt; fine armorial bookplate on front pastedown, front flyleaf removed. A revised edition, prepared by François Raguenet, possibly from a manuscript by Foigny himself. The dangerously heretical nature of the first edition has been tempered here by concentrating on the fabulous rather than the social and political. One of the earliest and best of all imaginary voyages to Australia, Foigny's book refers to the inhabitants of his Terre Australe as "Australiens" - the first time that the term was used to describe an inhabitant of the southern continent.Foigny (c.1650-1692) had a turbulent life. A promising career as a Franciscan monk was scotched by his 'licentious behaviour' and he was forced to flee to Geneva and Protestantism. The narrative purports to be the dying gift of the sailor Sadeur to an anonymous narrator. Twice kidnapped and four times shipwrecked, Sadeur only survives when he is plucked from the sea by a gigantic winged monster which fortuitously drops him on the shores of Western Australia. Ashore, his luck continues: as an hermaphrodite himself (the Jesuit priests called him male as a convenience) Sadeur is especially acceptable to the hermaphroditic, asexual society that he discovers. The Australians' utopian rejection of the body is responsible for their society's rationality and harmony. In this world Sadeur's curiosity and levity about the topic is considered very de trop, yet worse his 'propensity to unseemly arousal' (Rees). As in many imaginary voyages - Swift's Houhnyhyms, and their debates about the extermination of the Yahoos represent perhaps the best known example - the perfection of the community tolerates no impurities. Thus, the otherwise detached Australians are involved in a brutal war of annihilation with the Fundian 'half-men': crucially, Sadeur cannot stomach the war, a fact only complicated when 'bored by decades of sexless bliss, rational discussions and indoctrinations, athletic exercises and peaceful gardening ? [Sadeur] falls for a female among the enemy' (Friederich). This important work, which combines several major traditions, is 'a major utopia, rich in satire and iconoclasm' (Gibson) and presents a narrative response to the strict regimentation of the utopia, particularly in the context of the Pacific (Spate comments: 'in part at least a send-up of Quiros').Although relatively more common than the 1676 and 1701 editions, this is still a very rare work on the market.         Histoire de Guillaume III, Roy d'Angleterre

1692. CHEVALIER, N. Histoire de Guillaume III, Roy d'Angleterre, D'ecosse, De France, Et d'Irlande, Prince d'Orange. [4], 232 pp. Illustrated with two engraved frontispieces, the first by Adriaan Schoonebeek, the second by Romeyn de Hooghe, 12 full page engravings by de Hooghe and a large engraved headpiece along with 120 in-text engravings of medals by Schoonebeek. Folio, 305 x 190 mm, bound in contemporary Dutch speckled calf, maroon morocco spine label, spine elaborately gilt. Amsterdam: [The Author], 1692. |~||~||~||~| First Edition. An elegant numismatic work honoring the stadtholder-king, William III, authored and most likely privately printed by the hobbyist and coin collector Nicolas Chevalier. The 120 in-text engravings by Adriaan Schonebeek (1656-1705) depict the obverse and reverse of medals most, with portraits of William (many with Mary as well) and an emblematic scene. He also contributed the first of the two magnificent engraved title-pages, showing an allegorical triptych painting surrounded by an architectural border adorned with statuary. The 12 plates by Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708) are adaptations of his illustrations for Govert Bidloo's magnificent book, Komste van zyne majesteit Willem III, honoring William III's state entry to attend a meeting at The Hague of allies in league against Louis XIV. They depict the triumphal arches constructed for the great entry, three of the original arches were designed by de Hooghe himself. That Romeyn participated in the planning of the decorations is indicated by a payment he received (as "Pictura") from The Hague's painters' guild (see D.P. Snoep, Poaal en propaganda: Triumfalia in de Noordelijke Nederlanden, 1975, p. 91 ff.). Some toning throughout, often found with this book, still a very good copy in an attractive contemporary binding. PROVENANCE: John Landhwer, the prolific bibliographer of Romeyn de Hooghe, with his bookplate on the front paste-down. Landhwer, Romeyn de Hooghe 81. Landhwer, Splendid Ceremonies 148.

University of Salamanca, 1692. Leather Bound. Very Good. Ioanne A S. Thoma (John of St. Thomas). Prologomena in Scripturam Sacram. Salmanticae: apud viduam Lucae Perez, Typ. Vniv., 1692. Later edition, 12mo, pp. [25] 2-456; Original or contemporary plain vellum binding with string ties, now mostly gone. "Prolog. in Script." inked on the spine in gothic lettering. The vellum is rippled throughout with spotting and wear along the leather. Two chips near the spine out of the front board, one measuring 1 x 1 cm, the other 1 x 2 cm. A third chip near the fore edge measuring 2 x 0.5 cm. The rear board has a 1 x 1 cm area of book worm tunneling, though it does not penetrate deeper than the rear pastedown. Occasional spotting and creased corners within the text. The pastedowns are rippled with creasing and tearing. A few instances of brief annotation, the ink now faded. The book housed in a modern brown cloth solander box, the abbreviated title in gilt on the front. Toning at the spine of the box. John of St. Thomas, also known as Juan de Santo Tomas (1589-1644) was a Spanish Dominican Thomist, considered as one of the great interpreters of St. Thomas Aquinas. He served in two principle chairs of theology at the university in Alcala as well as serving as confessor to Philip IV (Wikipedia). Very scarce; we find only one copy in OCLC, located at the University of Salamanca in Spain.

        Essays on several subjects

London: Richard Bently. 1692. "Second edition, small 8vo, pp. [4], 178; full contemporary sheep, 18th- century calf gilt-lettered spine laid down, red morocco gilt spine label; armorial bookplate of Strickland Freeman Esq. dated 1810 mounted to front pastedown; edges and hinges rubbed, else very good and sound. DNB II, p. 719: ""[Thomas Pope Blount's] 'Essays on several Subjects,'...is the only work in which he has an opportunity of displaying his individuality as a writer. The essays in the first edition numbered in seven in all. The first illustrates the proposition that interest governs the world, and that popery is nothing but an invention of priests to get money; the second is on the great mischief and prejudice of learning; the third treats of education and custom, lamenting that as children are apt to believe everything, when they grow up they are apt to settle in their first impressions; in the fourth, on the respect due to the ancients, the conclusion is arrived at that we ought not to enslave ourselves too much to their opinions; the fifth answers in the negative the question as to whether the men of the present age are inferior to those of former ages either in respect of virtue, learning, or long life; the sixth demonstrates that the passions are our best servants, but our worst masters; and the seventh attributes the variety of opinions to the uncertainty of human knowledge."" An eighth essay would be added to the third impression, concerning religion, and coming to the conclusion that the God men image is ""a picture of their own complexions."" Wing B3349."

Marci Tullii Ciceronis Opera quae extant Omnia ex MSS. codicibus emendata

Lyon: Vander Aa, 1692. Eleven volumes, duodecimo, the first with four engraved folding plates, and all eleven volumes embellished with charming ornamental title-pages; one part moderately water-stained, another with slight marginal worming; a handsome set in mid eighteenth-century panelled calf with original labels. Handsome uniform panelled calf binding. Attractively bound set of Cicero's complete works in eleven volumes. The Lyon edition of 1692 is noted as 'respectable and correct' by Moss. The title-page claims the text was checked and edited by Dutch classical scholar Jacob Gronovius, and the first volume features his folding frontispiece portrait (although although the English literary lion Thomas Dibdin claimed this attribution is spurious). Jacob Gronovius was the father of botanist Jan Frederik Gronovius, correspondent and patron of Carl Linnaeus and the author of a treatise on the native plants and herbs of Virginia. This is a considerable publication, continuously paginated for a total of 3611 pages. The folding engraved plates include the detail of an epigraphic tribute to Cicero and numismatic relics relaying to the famed Roman orator.

Franckfurt am Mayn: Gottfried Tampachs, 1629. Fourth edition. Very Good. This work is Ercker's crowning achievement. It was highly prized in its time, and remained an important technical book for over 200 years because of its precise data concerning the fusion processes of gold, silver, copper, tin, iron, lead and mercury. "Ercker described laboratory procedures and equipment, gave an account of preparing the cupel, of constructing furnaces, and of the assaying balance and the method of operating it. He used as his model Agricola's De re Metallica, yet he was quite original and included on the procedures he himself had tested." -DSB IV 393.
