Novus Planiglobii Terrestris per utrumque polum conspectus

1692. "Splendido e decorativo mappamondo in proiezione polare. "Decorative world map world map originally produced by the Blaeu Family, but ultimately published by Gerard Valck. Shirley notes that ""the projection used - two north and south polar views, each extending to the equator - is not a common one and it has been suggested that Blaeu intended this special map for the Spanish edition of the Atlas Major which was never completed."" An unfortunate fire in 1672 destroyed the Blaeu Company and the atlas was never completed. The plate for this map was acquired by Gerald Valck, who replaced Blaeu's imprint and published circa 1695 in his own atlas. In early impressions such as this one, the imprint from the original Blaeu plate can still be seen in the lower cartouche. The most significant geographical feature of this map is the depiction of California as an island. While there had been numerous maps depicting California as an island before this one, it is the first example by Blaeu to do so. Throughout their existence, the Blaeu Company had consistently projected North America with California attached and the coast jutting to the far northwestern reaches of the Pacific. In this example the northern Pacific includes the land and Strait of Anian and just east of Tartaria, a partial coastline of Compagnie Landt which remained in most maps of the area for around 100 years. There are many geographic curiosities throughout the map that are worth noting. An early delineation of the Great Lake of North America can be seen by the incomplete large body of water just west of Virginia. In South America, there are two mythical lakes "Parime Lacus," and "Lago de los Xarayes," that remained for over 100 years. An incomplete Australia is depicted as being completely attached to New Guinea (labeled Terra dos Papous), while the islands of Tasmania and New Zealand are shown as nothing more than a speculative coastline. Below the map are two beautifully engraved scenes of Adam and Eve. To the left, Adam is shown resting on a cliff's edge with eve appearing out from his hip, looking to the heavens. Just right of the decorative cartouche is a scene showing Adam naming the animals. Above the map are animated engravings of the sun and moon with a figure of a sphere centered under the bannered title. Adorning the map are several compass roses and sailing ships. Copper engraving, with fine original colour, small expert repairs in the middle, otherwise in very good ocndition." Amsterdam Amsterdam Shirley #459. 545 410

Jamaica in 1692 - Jewish Pirates, slaves, and guns. Penned on 4 pages, front and verso on two conjoined sheets, 1 page on sheet with verso blank and addressed on verso of integral sheet: ""For their Majesties Service / To ye Rt Hono:ble the Lords of the Committee / of Trade and Forreign Plantations / At / Court / pr the John & Thomas / Thomas Eagles Comander Present."" Receipt on address leaf is dated 10 May 1692. One edge on each page has been heavily damaged, removing some text, noted below in [brackets]. The letter has been expertly infilled and is in vey good condition.Signed by members of the Council and including former and future Governors of Jamaica John White (acting 1691-1692), John Bourden (1692-1693), Peter Beckford (acting 1702), Peter Heywood (1716-1718), and Sir Nicholas Lawes (1718-1722) who served as Chief Justice (1698-1703). Peter Beckford had arrived in Jamaica from London in 1662 with two or three African slaves; the island had been seized by the British from Spain in 1655. At his death in 1710, Beckford was the wealthiest planter in Jamaica. He also served as President of the Council and Chief Justice of Jamaica.Jews arrived in Jamaica from the 16th century when it was settled by Spain. By 1670, Port Royal, Jamaica, once described as ""the wickedest in the world,"" had become a pirate stronghold and center of economic activity. Under the British, Port Royal Jamaica was home not only to privateers bearing letters of marque for operating against the Spanish, some of whom were Jewish, but was also home to a large Jewish community which economically backed the Pirate raids against the Spanish. There were complaints by merchants that Jewish merchants, many of whom were Sephardic Jews with roots in Spain, had an unfair advantage in trade because they could speak Spanish and were very successful trading with Spanish America. In 1686, the Council of Jamaica established a special tax on the Jewish community (""Jews Tribute""). Six years later, the non-Jewish merchants complained that the Jewish merchants found ways to avoid the special tax. As a result, an additional tax was decreed against Jews in 1693.In Jews, Slaves and the Slave Trade: Setting the Record Straight (New York: NYU Press, 1998), Eli Faber wrote, ""With the advent of the Dutch, some of Suriname's Jews left for Jamaica in 1677, preferring to live under the British flag. Ten Jewish families with 322 slaves reportedly did so, with individual holdings that ranged from a low of 2 to a high of 74, or an average of 32.2 per family … According to one contemporary account, the private traders delivered 35,718 slaves to Jamaica alone between 1698 and June 14, 1708, far in excess of the 6,854 delivered by the Royal African Company … [Jews] held 12.2 percent of the Company's stock in 1699…""The FortsThe Council first reports the condition of the walls and the number of mounted guns, protecting the island of Jamaica, at Fort Charles, Fort James, Fort Morgan, Fort Carlisle, Fort Rupert, and Fort Walker. Port Royal was called ""the richest and wickedest city in the world."" It was founded in the 1650s by the first British settlers who came to Jamaica. In part, ""Fort Charles hath thirty eight [guns] Mounted, eight of them honeycombed with age … Fort James has twenty six great guns mounted …the walls something out of repair … many defects in these two forts may prove inconvenient … [Fort] Rupert in good repair … Fort Morgan hath twenty s[ix] guns mounted except five of the carriages not servicable … Fort Carlisle is in good condition but not so usefull as w[as] first built had fourteene great gunns Mounted but three of [them] lately taken from thence and sent to the Leward part of the Island. Walker has Eighteen great gunns Mounted and is in good repair…""On June 7, 1692, less than five months after the letter here offered was written, a devastating earthquake hit Port Royal causing most of its northern section to fall into the sea. A huge tidal wave destroyed ships in the harbor and carried one of the ships into the middle of the town. Fort Charles survived, but Fort James and Fort Carlisle sank into the sea. Fort Rupert became a large region of water and great damage was done to Fort Morgan. Fort Walker was destroyed in the earthquake.

Bel exemplaire.

        Archaeologiae Philosophicae:

London: Typis R.N. Impensis Gualt. Kettilby, , 1692. sive Doctrina antiqua de Rerum Originibus. Small quarto (200 x 155 mm). Contemporary mottled calf (joints skilfully repaired), sides with two-line rules, red speckled edges. Small engraving in the text at p. 181. Endleaves ruled in red and with a few contemporary notes in Latin, Greek and Hebrew (also a few marginal annotations). A few short marginal tears and some leaves dog-eared, small wormhole through lower blank margin of gatherings K and L. An attractive copy. First edition of one of the primary works of the natural philosopher and headmaster Thomas Burnet (c.1635-1715), in which he attempted "to demonstrate that his theory of the earth was also compatible with what could be known of ancient accounts of creation" (ODNB). "Burnet's stunning theory of earth formation was an attempt to twist the arm of the Bible's creation story until it submitted to scientific knowledge. That story's pivotal event, the great deluge, played a central role in Burnet's theory since it completely changed the face of the earth and turned a perfectly smooth spherical paradise into the 'fallen' earth as we know it" (Urs App, The Cult of Emptiness: The Western Discovery of Buddhist Thought and the Invention of Oriental Philosophy, 2012, chapter 15). However, the book caused a storm of controversy in Britain and on the continent and it marked the end of Burnet's career as a public author; he even "instructed its publisher, Walter Kettilby, not to reprint, abridge, or translate the book" (ODNB).

Illustrationes sive additiones eruditissimae ad varias resolutiones Antonii Gomezii.

Lugduni [Lyon]: Sumptibus Anisson & Posuel Folio (32.7 cm, 12.9"). [4] ff., 380, [14] pp.. 1692 Later edition of Ayllón Laynez's additions to the Variarum resolutionum juris civilis, communis et regii by Antonio Gómez, a law professor at Salamanca. Gómez's text on civil, common, and royal law was first published at Salamanca in 1552, but it is likely that Ayllón Laynez was working from one of the many 17th-century printings. His additions — to selected chapters from each of Gómez's three books on matters of heredity, marriage, and torture, inter alia — were first printed at Utrera, Andalusia, in 1654. The text is in Latin, decorated with woodcut initials, factotum initials, and intricate head- and tailpieces. The title-page, printed in red and black, features a large device of a fleur-de-lis in an => elaborate emblematic cartouche. Rare, WorldCat & NUC Pre-1956 locating => just two copies in the U.S. Modern boards covered with 18th-century religious manuscript on vellum, with red speckled edges and ink title to spine; tight, with paper cockled and boards a bit sprung. Title-leaf with small marginal tear and three repairs; the next 88 pages repaired/reinforced in upper outer margin; minor worming variously, mostly marginal and often unnoticeable; small hole from natural paper flaw on one leaf. Foxing generally, other spotting occasionally. A used, occasionally abused, still strong copy of a scarce work.

[14] ff., 36 pp., pp. 40–131, 133–36; 51, [1 (blank)] pp., [1] f.. 1692 Personal experience among various indigenous people of differing regions of Mexico sets this treatise apart from the garden variety of other books by Villavicencio's contemporaries on surviving pre-Contact religious practices. One normally searches hard to find information on religious practices among the late 17th-century Chocho speakers of Oaxaca and Veracruz, for example, but some interesting tidbits can be found here — though the greatest portion of the volume is dedicated to practices among the various Nahuatl-speaking peoples, as they were viewed by Europeans as the norm for pre-Conquest practices. In fact, there is a confessionary in Nahuatl that speaks specifically to indigenous practices on pp. 11–19 of the second pagination. In addition to supplying firsthand practical information about native post-Contact survivals (e.g., the lengthy list found on pp. 49 and 50, second pagination, of sacrifice practices and superstitions that the Church frowned upon), the author displays considerable erudition on the subject of pre-Contact practices based on a huge body of published information, all of which is carefully documented. 17th-century Mexican imprints are ever increasingly difficult to find, and those produced in Puebla (as opposed to Mexico City) are the most difficult of all. This important treatise is => only the second complete copy we have had in our stock in more than 30 years of dealing in Mexicana. Curiously, there are two issues of this sole edition. After the work was printed but before all copies were sold or distributed, a two-leaf insert was printed that begins "Copia de carta escrita por . . . Don Fray Francisco Nunez obispo de Chiapa" and concerns idolatry in the Yucatan. Some few copies (e.g., those at Library of Congress and New York Public) have these added two leaves. Medina did not know of them and they are not present in the copies at the John Carter Brown, the Bancroft, Tulane, or Beinecke Libraries. Offered here is=> a complete copy of the first issue, i.e., without the later added letter. Provenance: Marca de fuego on closed bottom edges of the Hospital de Convalecientes de Nuestra Señora Belén de Puebla. Contemporary limp vellum, lacking the ties, modern lettering in ink (old style) on spine; binding a little small for the textblock. Worming at inner margins, occasionally into text, touching and occasionally costing letters but no whole words; waterstaining sometimes barely noticeable, other times like a tea stain. We'd rate it good++. => Complete, with the sometimes missing full-page woodcut of the Cruxifixion.

Irrig werden hier 3 Kupfertaf. pro Tl. angeführt). HAPPEL Eberhard Werner Guerner (1647-1690); Schriftsteller, Polyhistor u. Historiker.

[14] ff., 36 pp., pp. 40?-131, 133?-36; 51, [1 (blank)] pp., [1] f.. 11?-19 of the second pagination.
