In 4to grande (cm. 25,5); piena pelle coeva, dorso a 5 nervi. Axs

MARCUS AURELIUS & ANNE DACIER.
Claude Barbin, Paris, 1691. Volume I : 1 blank leaf + TP + [i]-[xlii] = Preface + [xliii]-[ccxxix] = La vie de Marc Aurele Antonin + [ccxxx] = Privilege du Roy + [1]-284 + 2 blank leaves ; Volume II : 2 blank leaves + TP + 291-747 + [748] = Fautes d'impression + 2 blank leaves, 12 mo. First Edition. With the lovely engraved vignette by Clerc at the top of page 1 showing the warrior Emperor sitting outside his tent and writing his Meditations. Working with her husband, André, Madame Dacier translated the Meditations, but the remarks in the long, 42-page "Preface" are all her own. There she presented her summary and analysis of Marcus Aurelius' thought, defending the classical Stoic perspective with philosophically sophisticated arguments while simultaneously tempering some of the Emperor's more heathen positions with her own passionately held Christian brand of Stoicism. In that same essay, she also used the truths of Stoicism to pointedly attack and excoriated the Epicurean philosophy which was then becoming fashionable in France. Dacier was received into the Academy of Ricovrati of Padus in 1684 and, shortly thereafter, she and her husband abjured their reformed religion and converted to Catholicism. Back in Paris, they were received by the King and the first president of the Paris parliament, M. de Harley, who lent them his country house at Ménil-Montant. It was on this quiet estate that they pursued de Harley's suggestion to translate Marcus Aurelius, a task that they tackled together, and where Madame Dacier composed the remarks found in her "Preface." The book also cont … [Click Below for Full Description]

Firenze [Florence]: Per Piero Matini, 1691. Small quarto (23 cm), (8), 46; (2), 251, pages. Title page in red and black with printer's vignette; decorative head- and tail-pieces, and ornamental initial caps. Text in Italian. ~ Third edition, improved. Franceso Redi (1626-1697) used the form of Ditirambo (dithyramb), a poetic meter of the ancient Greeks in the form of a song, here a paean praising the benefits of wine, particularly Tuscan wine. "Redi's poem is thought to have its beginning in a drinking session at the Academia della Crusca in 1666. The situational irony of this learned body in a state of inebriation is transferred to Redi's verse as the praises of solemn literati are sung by a drunken Bacchus. The poem is filled with references to classical as well as contemporary winemaking practices." (Catholic Encyclopedia). The one thousand line poem is forty-six pages, followed by additional annotations including other beverages and chocolate. "One of the most famous panegyrics on wine ever written... The notes are full of learned information on wines of all kinds, and on other drinks such as chocolate, tea and coffee, which latter Redi particularly hated." (Simon BG). Redi was a leading Florentine physician, in the employ of both Ferdinand II and Cosimo III. He is known for discrediting the theory of spontaneous generation and for his work in the field of parasitology. ~ Contemporary full vellum, gilt-decorated spine with leather title label. Ferrerio, Pietro - Falda, Giovanni Battista - De Rossi, Giovanni Giacomo
[Click Below for Full Description]

""non nobis solum nati sumus ortusque nostri partem patria vindicat, partem amici""(""Not for us alone are we born; our country, our friends, have a share in us."")With the Republic ended after Caesar's death and the Senate abolished, Cicero wrote what he considered to be his masterpiece-a work on ethics that emulated Greek philosophers as Romans had little native-grown philosophy. Among its most important elements is ""On Duties,"" written as a letter to Cicero's then 21-year-old son who was in university studies in Athens. Cicero composed ""On Duties"" in less than four weeks in October-November 44 BC, just over a year before Marc Antony had him killed. This Latin collection of the most popular of Cicero's moral treatises includes ""On Duties."" Among the famous sayings printed here: ""Primum, minima de malis."" RAVENEAU (Jacques).
Paris, chez Jean Guignard, 1691. in-12. 6ff. 215pp. + 1 pl. dépl. Cartonnage moderne genre ancien. Rousseurs. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

BARTOLI, Pietro Santi (1635-1700).
Nella Stamparia di Gio: Francesco Buagni, 1691., In Roma: - 4to. (323 x 219 mm) [8], 16, 15, 12 pp. Engraved section title-pages for each of the 3 parts, 116 full-page engraved plates (1-37, 1-46, 1-33). Full modern antique-style speckled calf, blind-stamped covers, raised bands, gilt-stamped black calf spine label. Fine. RARE. FIRST EDITION of this distinguished study of the ancient sepulchral lamps discovered in the tombs and caves of Rome. These lamps are shown in intricately-engraved plates; the plates were designed and engraved by Bartoli, with explanatory notes by Gio Pietro Bellori. Subsequent editions were published in Berlin in 1702 and Rome in 1704, but this first edition contains 12 plates not found in the later editions. Bellori was a prominent biographer of the Italian Baroque artists of the seventeenth century. As an art historian, he was the Baroque equivalent of Giorgio Vasari. "Giovanni Pietro Bellori (1613-1696), an eminent Italian archaeologist, was born at Rome in 1613. From his youth Bellori devoted himself to the study of art and antiquity, in which he was encouraged, and at the outset greatly assisted, by his uncle, Francesco Angeloni, secretary to Cardinal Aldobrandini, himself a good antiquary, and author of an account of the coins of the Roman Emperors, and of the Historia di Terni. Bellori wrote many works of great use in their day and which are still often referred to with advantage. Several of Bellori's works were posthumous; among them may be noticed- Le Antiche Lucerne Sepolcrali." [The English Cylopaedia, p. 206].

The work contains the Latin version by Pagninus and a Hebrew version on facing pages. Pagninus is best known for his new Latin translation of the entire Bible which was published in 1528. His Bible translation stands out for its literal adherance to the Hebrew and was more accurate than the Vulgate, thus gaining the preference of many scholars. VOLANT des VERQUAINS (Jean).
Lille, Jean Chrysostome Malte, 1691.

Ex-libris. Livres
