Jacob Benigni Bossuet (1627 - 1704) was a French bishop and theologian, renowned for his sermons and other addresses. He has been considered by many to be one of the most brilliant orators of all time and a masterly French stylist. In 1642, Bossuet enrolled in the Collège de Navarre in Paris to finish his classical studies and to begin the study of philosophy and theology. His mentor at Navarre was the college's president, Nicolas Cornet, the theologian whose denunciation of Antoine Arnauld at the Sorbonne in 1649 was a major episode in the Jansenist controversy. When Bossuet was chosen to be the tutor of the Dauphin, oldest child of Louis XIV, he wrote several works for the edification of his pupil, one of which was Politics Derived from the Words of Holy Scripture, a discourse on the principles of royal absolutism. The work was published posthumously in 1709. Signature required on delivery. [Attributes: First Edition]

Barclay, Robert
London: Printed for Thomas Northcott, 1691. Second Edition. Very Good. Second edition. [181]-236 pp. Complete text but does not include Appendix: "Robert Barclay, His Vindication[...]" other copies were apparently bound with. Disbound with paper tape on spine. Very Good with slightly worn corners, small stains on last page and a small marginal checkmark there as well. Uncommon. A Quaker tract by prominent a Scottish Quaker and governor of East Jersey (later New Jersey), first published in 1674. Barclay portrays the more radical Puritans ("Ranters and Other Libertines") with their disorganization and "Romanists" (i.e. Catholics) with their extensive hierarchy as the two undesirable polar opposites the Quakers are sagely perched between. The Ranters (insofar as they were a coherent tendency and not a straw man created by conservatives) are of interest to historians of radical social movements for they were the undisputed vanguard of the English Revolution, advocating all sorts of heresies from public nudity to proto-communism to a sort of pre-Nietzschian amoralism. This text would be reprinted many times in the century following its initial publication, serving as a warning against the type of revolutionary excesses of the 17th century.

Very Good: Binding tight: no Missing Pages: some foxing due to age. Second Editon: 2 Volumes. Nice set of Volumes detailing the life and thoughts of Marc Aurelius of antiquity.
WILKINS, John
1691. One of the earliest books to describe the vision of human flight! 'Mathematical Magick' is an impressive and highly controversial 17th-century treatise by John Wilkins. Wilkins set out to explain the mechanics of mathematics and give an outlook for the future of the developments of math. However, this book was not focused only on arithmetic. Wilkins discusses the, mechanics of wheel and pulley physics, methods of the screw and the wedge, and the making of war machines - siege engines and catapults. While these discussions on physical science and mechanics are important and useful, the most impressive and interesting section is Wilkins perspective on the art of flying. Wilkins claims that the best chance of man flying is with the aid of spirts, angels, and ...birds! He also suggests that by fastening wings to the body, one could fly or fly a chariot. Wilkins himself describes other attempts at flight by other experimentalists: Tis related of a certain English Monk called Elmerus, about the Confessors time, that he did by such wings fly from a Tower above a furlong; and so another from Saint Marks steeple in Venice; another at Norinberge; and Busbequius speaks of a Turk in Constantinople, who attempted something this way. Though the truth is, most of these Artists did unfortunately miscarry by falling down and breaking their arms or legs, yet that may be imputed to their want of experience. Wilkins was certain with enough practice that man would learn to and should be able to fly! He even envisioned a 'flying chariot which may be so contrived as to carry a man within it … [Click Below for Full Description]

CORONELLI (Vincenzo).
[Venise, 1691]. 450 x 600 mm.

Dryden, John
London: Printed for Jacob Tonson, 1691. First edition. Hardcover. 4to. (14),51,(1)pp. The half-title is present with its advertisement on the reverse. Also present are the Prologue and the Epilogue. The earliest copies lack these leaves, but an unsigned leaf was inserted after A4 headed "Prologue to the OPERA, Spoken by Mr. Betterton." H2 was cancelled and a new leaf headed [H2v]: The EPILOGUE. Spoken by Mrs. Bracegirdle, the word FINIS being transferred from H2 to H2v. The text block shows some aging and light staining; it is finely bound in full crushed crimson morocco, unsigned but reminiscent of Sangorski: Spine in six compartments with raised bands, intricately tooled in gilt; gilt rules on the boards; gilt inner dentelles; endpapers of crimson Victorian cloth in a linen effect. Top edge gilt. The text has been bulked out with several pages of blank paper in the rear. A nice copy of the scarce first edition in a fine binding. Dryden's 'King Arthur' owes little to the Arthur of history of romance. The play centers around a battle with Oswald, a Saxon leader, which Arthur wins. He also wing the faire but blind Emmeline, whose sight is restored by Merlin. The play was first performed at the Queen's Theatre with music by Purcell, and marks the likely beginning of a rekindling of interest in King Arthur and other things monarchial after their suppression by Cromwell and the Commonwealth. Important 17th century work on Cornea and Eyes Aqueous Humor by the Belgium physician Warner Chrouet. In this work Chrouet refutes and proves wrong the theory of famous anatomy professor Anton Nuck (1650-1692) who concluded that Aqueous Humor derived from blood vessels. According to Diderot's Encyclopédie, Warner Chrouet had the great merit of proving that Aqueous Humor was not secreted by blood vessels, Chrouet also chemically analyzed the eye's Aqueous Humor. 1691. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. A rare, early edition of Nicolas Fontaine of Royaumond's French Old and New Testament Bible. First published in 1670, this book is richly illustrated and partially annotated with paraphrases and commentary from a Jansenist perspective. Shortly before 'L'Histoire du Vieux et du Nouveou Testament' was published, Fontaine was imprisoned for being a Jansenist, a sentence that kept him locked away for five years until 1669. For decades, this work had been attributed to Isaac Lemaistre de Sacy, a close ally and fellow inmate of Fontaine. [Attributes: First Edition]

Very Good: Binding tight: no Missing Pages: some foxing due to age. Second Editon: 2 Volumes. Nice set of Volumes detailing the life and thoughts of Marc Aurelius of antiquity. Translated and annotated by Anne Dacier and her husband. While both were translators, Anne was considered the better scholar. The volumes are in very good condition, with the binding tight and clean. Discoloration and foxing due to age. Some woodcuts on title pages; volume one has great portrait of "Marcus Aurele Antonin". Occasional decorated capital and embellishments on some pages either at the beginning of a section or the end. Nice bookplate from John "Marquess of Tueeddale Earle of Gifford Viscount of Walden, Lord Hay of Yester &c.". Second edition with remarks in the text or "footnotes" as we would call them. All in all, a fascinating bit of literary history with translations by an early female scholar. Very Good Condition: 12mo, 2 volumes, Leather Binding with ridged spine: gilt lettering and decoration. Some holes at top of spine on both volumes. Bookplates inside front in both volumes. Notation in old ink inside spare page on both. Edited by Jacob Benigni Bossuet
PSALTER. Liber Psalmorum, additis Canticis. Edited by Jacob Benigni Bossuet. Engraved frontispiece by P. Giffart. xciv, [4], 512, [14] pages. 8vo, later full black morocco, gilt-lettered spine, multi-fillet gilt turn-ins, all edges in gilt; light wear, a sound fresh copy. Binding sound wear to hinges as pictured on front cover bumped corners. Overall very good condition [Paris]: Jean Anisson, 1691 FIRST EDITION. Inscribed "Ex dono illustriss[imi] Epi[scopi] Authoris" on the title. This copy with variant title ornament and collation. Tchemerzine II, page 393.

Accademia del Cimento; Lorenzo MAGALOTTI (1637-1712).
Gio: Filippo Cecchi, 1691. Large 4to. [xv], CCLXIX, [20] pp. Half-title, title printed in red & black, title vignette, 75 copper engraved plates, numerous woodcut initials and head & tailpieces, index; prominent waterstains to corners, lacks the portrait of Cosimo (some copies have the portrait, others do not). Later quarter vellum, marbled boards, black leather gilt-stamped spine label, vellum tips. Very good. Second edition, first printed in 1666/7. This marvelous work contains descriptions of experiments on air-pressure, freezing of water, an early account of Torricelli's invention of the barometer, thermometer, electrical and magnetic experiments, measurements of the velocity of sound and light, and experiments on heat and cold. It contains many large, full-page engravings of experimental apparatus used to conduct these early experiments in natural physics. The engravings on pages iii, vi, viii and xiii show Torricelli's thermometer with a column of liquid and capsules of various density liquids that will either float of sink, depending upon the surrounding temperature. Also known as a "termometro lento" (slow thermometer), this clever instrument is still marketed as a functioning curiosity today. / As the mechanism of the atmosphere exerting continuous pressure on the surface of the earth was unknown at that time, the experiments using a barometer and bell jar (pp. xxiv-xxxi) seem rather naïve to us today. The members of the Academy couldn't determine why the mercury in the column didn't fall, once the barometer was 'shielded' from the surrounding atmosphere. [1 blank leaf], 1-4 leaves, [2 leaves], 5-8 leaves, 9-16pp, 17-23 leaves, [1 leaf], 24-438pp, [2 blank leaves]. Contemporary speckled calf boards with gilt-stamped lettering on the front cover. Spine with gilt tooling, raised bands and a small handwritten paper label. Edges of the book block in red. This is the first Portuguese translation of Bahya ibn Paquda influential treatise of the ethical teachings of Judaism, "Chovot Ha-Levavot", original written In Judeo-Arabic, in Spain, circa 1040. This translation into Portuguese was done by Samuel ben Isaac Abaz, itself taken from the original 12th-century translation into Hebrew by Judah ben Saul ibn Tibbon. During the 17th century Amsterdam became is significant center of Jewish printing to serve members of the city's then sizable Sephardic community. A significant portion of the community would have been ex-Marranos (Jews, who had outwardly converted to Catholicism during the inquisition in Spain, who then immigrated and were able to reestablished their Jewish identity), and thus were unable to read Hebrew, hence the publication of Jewish works in vernacular Spanish and/or Portuguese (as is the case here). As stated by the author in the introduction: "The Torah is divided into two parts - the duties to be performed by the organs (chovot ha`evarim) and the duties of the heart (chovot halev), namely those belonging to human conscience. The majority of rabbis pay primary attention to the outward observance … [Click Below for Full Description]

Confucius
F. Fraser, London, 1691. Scarce first edition in English of The Morals of Confucius, regarded as the first work which introduced English readers to Confucianism. Small octavo, bound in original cloth, gilt titles and tooling to the spine. Consisting of three parts: Of the Antiquity and Philosophy of the Chineses; A Collection out of Confucius's Works in Three Books; and Eighty Maxims. Introductory publishers advertisement. In very good condition, name crossed out on the title page, small stamp. An exceptional example. Scarce and desirable, especially in the original cloth. "[B]asically a translation of Le Morale de Confucius, philosophe de la Chine" (Savouret, 1688), The Morals of Confucius was "translated and abridged from the Latin translation of Prospero Intorcetta, Philippe Couplet, and others, or from an intervening French translation attributed to Louis Cousin or Jean de La Brune" (ESTC, T140229). Chinese philosopher Confucius's principles had a commonality with earlier Chinese tradition with an emphasis on personal and governmental morality, ancestral veneration, respect for one's elders, and strong family loyalty. His teachings left a legacy of disciples and gained widespread prominence under the Han and Tang Dynasties, became the official imperial philosophy of China after his death in 479 B.C.E., and remained the dominant philosophy in China until the early 20th century. Likely compiled and composed by his disciples after Confucius's death, the Analects, or Maxims, grew to be one of the central texts of Confucianism by the end of the Han Dynasty. CONFUCIUS.
Printed for Randal Taylor near Stationers-Hall. 1691. [16], 142pp. 8vo. Some light browning, first & last pages a little dusted, paper flaw tear to lower edge C3. Expertly bound in recent panelled calf, raised bands, red morocco label. Early ownership name of James Taylor at head of C1, and of Anne Young at head of titlepage. ESTC R23060. 'This 1691 work is currently regarded as the first time that English readers were introduced to Confucianism beyond an admission of its existence; it was based on La Brune's French translation, which appeared in Amsterdam in 1688. This in itself had used the 1687 Latin translation of Confucius's works published in Paris by Intorcetta, although for this publication he was aided by Christian Herdtrich, Francis Rougemont and Philippe Couplet. That The Morals of Confucius was based on the 1688 Amsterdam volume suggests that Nathanael Vincent's hoped-for project never transpired: he was anticipating a direct English translation of the Sapientia Sinica from Siam, which was in circulation before 1685. The translation had indeed arrived from these Jianchang/Goa texts, but not directly from Vincent's Siam edition. Instead it appeared via a Latin edition in Paris (Confucius Sinarum philosophus) and a French translation in Amsterdam (Lâ Morale dê Confucius). Either those responsible for the 1691 English edition considered these 1687 and 1688 editions to be better sources, or they simply had nothing to do with (and indeed pre-empted) Vincent and his friends.' DROUIN, Vincent Denis
Guillaume de Lüyne, 1691. FIRST EDITION OF THIS VERY RARE AND ORIGINAL WORK ON THE BRAIN AND THE SENSE ORGANS. Recorded as a Maître Chirurgien de l’Hôpital General, ‘Drouin enjoyed an excellent reputation as a skilled surgeon in the French army and returned to private life to become chief surgeon at Les Petites Maisons in Paris. ‘This work, important in the development of neuroanatomy during the late seventeenth century, is the result of keen observation and careful dissection. In it, Drouin discusses the skull, the brain and its circulation, and the structure of the nose, eye, tongue, and ear. The nine folding plates were engraved from Drouin’s own drawings’ (Heirs of Hippocrates p. 247). Drouin clearly relies on his own anatomical dissections, rather than the authority of others. He cites, sometimes critically, Descartes, Duncan, Stensen, Bartholin, and Malpighi. Provenance: manuscript ex libris ‘Pt. Cholet M.DCC.LXXX.IIIII’ [sic] in ink within floral border, and pasted slip in ms. ‘Philibert Cholet 46’ on front pastedown; a similar ex libris of a book belonging to Cholet appears in a copy of Elie Col de Vilars, Cours de chirurgie dicté aux écoles de Médecine de Paris (Paris 1759). Heirs of Hippocrates 700; Krivatsy 3404; Wellcome II p. 487; OCLC locates only three copies in the US, at Iowa, National Library of Medicine, and Minnesota. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
