Ferrerio, Pietro - Falda, Giovanni Battista - De Rossi, Giovanni Giacomo
[Click Below for Full Description]

PETTY, William.
London: for Robert Clavel, and Hen. Mortlock, 1691. Octavo (171 x 104 mm). Contemporary panelled calf, rebacked, spine lettered in gilt, panels ornately mottled and tooled in blind. Imprimatur leaf and terminal advertisements present. A few tiny marks to covers and contents, else a very good copy. Second edition, first published the previous year, of what is by title at least Petty's key work, posthumously published. After training as a doctor and being admitted to the College of Physicians, Petty worked for many years as an administrator in Ireland, and was a founding member of the Royal Society. He has gone down in history as the originator of statistical analysis under the name of political arithmetic. He established important themes and methods for classical economists, and his works provide abundant detail of the physical and human geography of seventeenth-century Ireland and England. The work was originally published with the date 1690 (the initial licence leaf is dated 7 November 1690). "Apart from dropping a comma in the fourth line in some copies and the change of date, the title-page is identical with that of [the edition of 1690] and is printed from the same setting of type. The imprimatur and the rest of the book have been reset line-by-line including the Errata, though some of them have been corrected." Jacob Benigni Bossuet (1627 - 1704) was a French bishop and theologian, renowned for his sermons and other addresses. He has been considered by many to be one of the most brilliant orators of all time and a masterly French stylist. In 1642, Bossuet enrolled in the Collège de Navarre in Paris to finish his classical studies and to begin the study of philosophy and theology. His mentor at Navarre was the college's president, Nicolas Cornet, the theologian whose denunciation of Antoine Arnauld at the Sorbonne in 1649 was a major episode in the Jansenist controversy. When Bossuet was chosen to be the tutor of the Dauphin, oldest child of Louis XIV, he wrote several works for the edification of his pupil, one of which was Politics Derived from the Words of Holy Scripture, a discourse on the principles of royal absolutism. The work was published posthumously in 1709. Signature required on delivery. [Attributes: First Edition]

ESTC records seven copies in the U.K. and seven in North America. Only edition of an informative account of trade in the East Indies and the East India Company by an ?insider? merchant, George White, who calls for a refounding of the company by a national subscription and an Act of Parliament. White writes ?at the desire of several Members of Both Houses of Parliament? and responds to three of their questions: ?Whether the trade to the East-Indies was really such a great advantage to the nation, as general discourse represented it??, what is the ?constitution, management, and condition of the present company? . and ?my opinion of the most proper manner and method for settling that trade to the honour and interest of the kingdom? (1). White argues that the East-Indian trade is a linchpin in the wheel of English commerce: ?This trade do'[e]s not only supply us with varieties of goods for our necessary use and ornament; but the greater part of the commodities brought from India are exported to sundry parts in Europe, Africa, and America, which does further advance our navigation and commerce? Jean Baptiste NOLIN (1657 ca. - 1708)
Nolin estabilished his printing buisiness in Paris, Rue St. Jacques, where he engraved and sold many maps; on many of them, he erroneously wrote "King's engraver"and "Duque d'Orleans geographer". His competitor Guillaume De L'Isle accused him and had him condamend for plagiarism. His business, however, grew bigger and bigger. This work is taken from the famous Theatre de la guerré en Italie.., printed for the first time in 1691. The map is decorated with a marvellous cartouche and the plan of Turin, Vercelli and Verrua. Copperplate, two big sheets joined together, signs of fold on verso, contemporary colour on the borders, in excellent condition. Barclay, Robert
London: Printed for Thomas Northcott, 1691. Second Edition. Second edition. [181]-236 pp. Complete text but does not include Appendix: "Robert Barclay, His Vindication[...]" other copies were apparently bound with. Disbound with paper tape on spine. Very Good with slightly worn corners, small stains on last page and a small marginal checkmark there as well. Uncommon. A Quaker tract by prominent a Scottish Quaker and governor of East Jersey (later New Jersey), first published in 1674. Barclay portrays the more radical Puritans ("Ranters and Other Libertines") with their disorganization and "Romanists" (i.e. Catholics) with their extensive hierarchy as the two undesirable polar opposites the Quakers are sagely perched between. The Ranters (insofar as they were a coherent tendency and not a straw man created by conservatives) are of interest to historians of radical social movements for they were the undisputed vanguard of the English Revolution, advocating all sorts of heresies from public nudity to proto-communism to a sort of pre-Nietzschian amoralism. This text would be reprinted many times in the century following its initial publication, serving as a warning against the type of revolutionary excesses of the 17th century. Very Good.

Giovanni FIORE (Cropani 1622 - 1683)
Acquaforte e bulino, 1691. Dimensioni 430x365.
