Amsterdam, Jan ten Hoorn, 1691. Translated from the French. 2nd corrected and annotated impression. 8°: [12], 536, [8]. With engraved titlepage and three full page engravings (all unsigned) by Jan Luyken. This copy from the library of the Dutch chemist Dr. A. T. P. van Son from Schoonhoven, acquired on the occasion of his promotion in 1898 at the Philipps-University in Marburg (Germany). Lit.: Klaversma/Hannema, Jan en Caspar Luyken te boek gesteld, 838; Hoogendoorn, Bibliography of the Exact Sciences in the Low Countries, LEME01 (nr.2); Very rare second edition (the Short Title Catalogue Netherlands mentions one copy in Amsterdam University Library and another copy is known from the Jan Luyken collection in the Amsterdam Museum) of the Dutch translation of Cours de chimie (1675) by Nicolas Lémery (1645-1715). In 1683 the first Dutch edition was published by Jan ten Hoorn in Amsterdam; this second edition came out in 1691. Other Dutch editons of this popular course on chemistry were published in 1704 and 1725. Lémery did not concern himself much with theoretical speculations, but holding chemistry to be a demonstrative science, confined himself to the straightforward exposition of facts and experiments. In consequence, his lecture-room was filled with people of all sorts, anxious to hear a man who shunned the barren obscurities of the alchemists, and did not regard the quest of the philosopher's stone and the elixir of life as the sole end of his science. His Cours de chymie (1675) was published in many editions in different languages, and for a century it maintained its re … [Click Below for Full Description]

First Editions.First (only) edition of the two famous Spinozistic Philopater-novels. The first volume describes the fight of the protagonist Philopater (very much similar to the author) against the orthodox Calvinism of Voetius and Coccejus, with some references to Spinoza and his followers. Since both the orthodox and the more liberal party in the Dutch Republic were attacked it did not arouse too much protest from the authorities. In the second volume Spinoza's ideas are clearly expressed in a more popular way. 'We find in this book, without any doubt, a rather pure tradition from Spinoza's most intimate circle of friends on the true meaning of difficult points in his teaching' (Dunin-Borkowski quoted by Bamberger). The book was severely prosecuted and in 1698 forbidden by the Court of Holland and the States of Friesland. It brought its publisher - and perhaps co-author - 8 years imprisonment, a fine of 3000 guilders, and 25 years of banishment. *Van der Linde 72 & 73. Wolf 643. Bamberger 85. Jacob Benigni Bossuet (1627 - 1704) was a French bishop and theologian, renowned for his sermons and other addresses. He has been considered by many to be one of the most brilliant orators of all time and a masterly French stylist. In 1642, Bossuet enrolled in the Collège de Navarre in Paris to finish his classical studies and to begin the study of philosophy and theology. His mentor at Navarre was the college's president, Nicolas Cornet, the theologian whose denunciation of Antoine Arnauld at the Sorbonne in 1649 was a major episode in the Jansenist controversy. When Bossuet was chosen to be the tutor of the Dauphin, oldest child of Louis XIV, he wrote several works for the edification of his pupil, one of which was Politics Derived from the Words of Holy Scripture, a discourse on the principles of royal absolutism. The work was published posthumously in 1709. Signature required on delivery. [Attributes: First Edition]

[Villars, Abbé de (Nicolas-Pierre-Henri de Montfaucon)]
Cologne: Pierre Marteau, 1691. Hardcover. Very good. [ca. 1691 and ca. 1703.] 16mo. Two volumes in one. 155;[2],150pp. In French. Later three-quarter calf and marbled boards, gilt spine rules, gilt leather label. First title page printed in red and black with armillary sphere device. Early inscriptions in flyleaf. Closely trimmed at fore-edge, touching some characters of text (with no loss). Joints expertly repaired, binding rubbed and moderately worn. Overall very good. Early edition of the best known work of Henri de Montfaucon, Abbé de Villars (1635-1673), for which he is said to have been murdered by the Rosicrucians. This edition adds the “Réponse à la lettre de Monseigneur” to the 1670 original text and is bound with a “posthumous” sequel published ca. 1703 by Pierre Mortier in Amsterdam. The primary work, a satirical dialogue between a Cabalist and a skeptic, is largely concerned with the Paracelsan idea of the marriage of elemental spirits to human beings. It ostensibly unveiled Rosicrucian secrets, which may have been what led to Villars’s assasination on the road to Lyon in 1673. Despite its satirical nature, the work has been treated as a source book for esoteric knowledge over the generations to the present day. F. Leigh Gardner describes it in that spirit in his BIBLIOTHECA ROSICRUCIANA: “The chief figure in it is said to be taken from G. F. Borri, who is the imaginary Count de Gabalis; although written in a satirical vein yet it contains profound truths; possibly the author found it necessary in those days to disseminate knowl … [Click Below for Full Description]

Wood provides biographical sketches on hundreds of individuals whose names were associated with Oxford Cathedral and University. Notable names include John Barlow, spy to Henry VIII; Peter Heylin, Erasmus, Queen Elizabeth, Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, Francis Bacon, Thomas More, Duns Scotus, John Wyclif, William Tyndale, famous bible translator, and much more! H.F. Woodhouse, Language and style in a Renaissance epic: Berni's corrections to Boiardo's Orlando innamorato, London, 1982, pp. 237-238). Also included are a complete set of the maps of Chinese provinces (seven in total), together with the striking two sheet map of China. The maps of North America show the Mississippi with La Salle's recent explorations at its mouth in 1681-1687; the extent of French ambitions are reflected in the title ‘Canada - Nuova Francia' over most of the eastern half of the continent.
