Ottima e fresca copia marginosa. Cfr. [Click Below for Full Description]

William Camden, and edited by Thomas Smith
London - Richard Chiswell, 1691 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. The scarceposthumously published collection of William Camden's correspondence and epistles. Bound in half leather and marbled paper-covered boards, with gilt lettering and spine decoration. Recently rebacked. In Latin. The first leaf bears half-title on recto and portrait on verso. Includes a life of William Camden by Thomas Smith. The second part of the work has a half-title, Gulielmi Camdeni Annales ab anno 1603, ad annum 1623. The full extent of Camden's involvement in the intellectual, political, and international affairs of his generation also goes beyond his published writing and the professional offices that he held. A fuller measure of this involvement can be gathered from his correspondence, a significant part of which is collected in Thomas Smith's edition, V. cl. Gulielmi Camdeni et illustrium virorum ad G. Camdenum epistolae (1691), which also contains a reasonably full Latin life of Camden -ODNB. William Camden, 1551-1623, historian and herald. Camden's intellectual and literary legacy to his own and succeeding generations has been considerable. His work and friendship exerted both direct and indirect influence on writers and historians and helped transform the methods of historical enquiry and the forms and genres of their work. He had a profound interest in imaginary literature as well as in the many different forms of non-fiction writing, and he had exceptionally strong ties with the literary world, including such men as Sidney, Spenser, Jonson, Drayton, and William Browne -ODNB. DUSART
1691. DUSART, Cornelius. Les Héros de la Ligue. Ou La Procession Monacale. Conduitte par Louis XIV, pour la Conversion des Protestants de Son Royaume. Comprising 26 leaves, including an engraved title-page and an engraved Sonnet. Illustrated with 24 mezzotints with contemporary hand-colouring, engraved by J. Gole after Dusart and Picart. 4to., 220 x 165 mm, bound in contemporary 3/4 Dutch tan calf, speckled paper over boards, red leather title-label on spine. A Paris: Chez Père Peters, 1691. |~||~||~||~||~||~||~| |~||~||~| First Edition. Dutuit state one, with the date on title. This is the only copy we could locate of this rare book with the plates in contemporary colour. Normally, if the book can be found, the mezzotints appear in black and white only. Les Héros de la Ligue carries a fictitious imprint of "A Paris" and lists an imaginary printer "Père Peters." It was, in fact, printed in Holland as a virulent anti-Catholic satire during the turbulent times of Louis XIV's revocation of the Edit of Nantes. Cornelius Dusart (1660-1707) worked in the genre of his master/teacher Adriaen van Ostade, the celebrated painter and engraver of portraits and Dutch peasant life. Byran's Biographical Dictionary of Painters and Engravers II, 107 states that Dusart "executed some very spirited etchings, and a few plates in mezzotint, which are full of humorous character." The preface, only published in the later 1693 Amsterdam edition, describes at length the source of inspiration for Dusart's satirical portraits, which certainly follow in the tradition set by Dusart's fellow countryman E … [Click Below for Full Description]

Van Der Muelen, Gulielmus
Trajecti Ad Rhenum Ex Officina Francisci Halma, Academiae Typographi, 1691. Later leather binding with stamped design on front, five rolled bands on spine with gilt title in red square. Some wear on edges and corners , possible reinforcement of front hinge. Interior toning though not heavy. Ornate, armorial bookplate on front pastedown from the House of Abercairny. More modern bookplate on rear pastedown. Book is square but front hinge is suspicious. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 135, 240, 120 pages; This book is in Latin and I'm not sure of the translation. I think the book deals with the origins of laws but I'm unsure of "Pomponii." Few copies of this work are listed on-line. One that has been scanned was owned by John Adams. No other copies are offered for sale. This is an attractive 17th century work. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

SHAKESPEARE, William
London: by H[enry]. H[ills]. Jun. for Hen Herringman and R Bentley, and sold by Joseph Knight and Francis Saunders,, [after 1691]. As it is now Acted at the Theatre Royal. Quarto (227 × 166 mm). Early twentieth-century full red morocco by Riviere & Son, spine gilt in compartments between raised bands, sides ruled in gilt with a French fillet, gilt inner dentelles, gilt edges. Housed in a flat back cloth solander box. Joints neatly restored, paper age-toned as usual with seventeenth-century quartos, but a very good copy, well-margined all round. An unusually good example of an early quarto edition, surviving examples of which are commonly found trimmed and in poor condition. There is no lifetime quarto of Julius Caesar, which was first published in the first folio in 1623, that text being the sole authority for the play. Unusually for a major Shakespeare play, the text suffered no adaptation in the Restoration. The play was revived by Thomas Killigrew's King's Company in 1672, using the original text, with Charles Hart initially playing Brutus. Thomas Betterton (1635–1710), generally recognized as "the greatest English actor between Burbage and Garrick", took the part in later productions and is here listed in the part, with his boyhood friend Edward Kynaston as Antony. The quarto was first published by Herringman in 1684, the year he turned over the retail side of his business to Francis Saunders and his partner Joseph Knight, and the year before he published Shakespeare's fourth folio. It was followed by four undated reprints with closely similar imprints … [Click Below for Full Description]

Leibniz later provided the answer, followed by Johann Bernoulli and Huygens.'These two papers are a historical account of the origin of the study of this transcendental curve, and, at the same time, the first physical-geometric construction showing the species-relationship between the catenary and the logarithmic curves, as two companion curves; one arithmetic, the other geometric. All of the differentials of the catenary curve, are arithmetic means of corresponding differentials of the logarithmic curve; and, all of the differentials of the logarithmic curve, are geometric means of the catenary.'"The Catenary is the form of a hanging fully … [Click Below for Full Description]

Vincenzo Coronelli
Vincenzo Coronelli (1650 – 1718) a copperplate engraving in superb condition from 'Isolario dell'Atlante Veneto' published in Venice from 1691-1698, measuring 13½”x19¾”. This very interesting and uncommon copper engraving, probably done by Vincenzo Coronelli, depicts the swirling currents, called voragine or vortex, and the large waves that occur in a narrow strait on the Norwegian coast. This famous vortex, the Moskestrom, is a system of tidal eddies and whirlpools and has been featured in many historical accounts, generally exaggerated as it is here. It was first described more than 2000 years ago by the Greek historian Pytheas, and later, it was marked on many nautical maps with warnings and dramatic descriptions. The Swedish bishop Olaus Magnus showed it on his 1539 map "Carta Marina," ascribing it to divine force and describing it as stronger than the Sicilian Charybdis. Petter Dass, a Norwegian priest, wrote a detailed factual description in his 1685 topographical poem, "The Trumpet of Nordland." The Moskestrom, widely known for centuries for its strength and dangerous whirlpools, has inspired many other authors, notably Edgar Allan Poe and Jules Verne, who both portrayed it inaccurately as a single massive whirlpool in their works. This example is uncolored as issued and is decorated with a compass rose, two title cartouches and several ships. A very beautiful, ornate and separately printed border further embellishes this fascinating engraving. Coronelli’s 'Isolario', believed to be Coronelli’s greatest work, is one of the most decorative and ornate of all 17th centu … [Click Below for Full Description]
