ESPINOSA Y MALO (Felix de Lucio).
Mazzarino, por Juan Vanberge, Flamengo, 1691. - Petit in-4. [Click Below for Full Description]

Palavicino y Villarrasa, Francisco Javier
Mexico: Por Doña Maria de Benavides, viuda de Juan de Ribera Small 4to. [5], 7 ff.. 1691 The Convent of Jesus Maria was established in the late 16th century in Mexico City for the granddaughters and great-granddaughters of conquistadors and other early settlers who lacked dowries that would allow them to marry in their station. Later the requirement of ties to conquerors and early settlers was relaxed. The present sermon was preached on the occasion of the special event in the church of the convent that is mentioned in the title of this work. => It came from the press of one of the great woman printers / printing entrepreneurs of colonial Mexico. Searches of NUC, WorldCat, COPAC, CCBP, and the OPACs of the national libraries of Mexico and Spain locate only the copy at the John Carter Brown Library, but we have an unverified report of another in the Lafragua Collection at Mexican National Library. Mid-20th-century red pebbled morocco, gilt spine. Partial marca de fuego on top and bottom edges. Wormtrack into text, touching but not costing words; generally quite clean with just an old spot or two to title-page. Very good.

Josephus, Flavius
Coloniae: Sumptibus Mauritii Georgii Weidmanni Folio. 38 ff., 1102 pp., 4 ff., 68 pp., 13 ff.. 1691 Josephus (b. A.D. 37) provides one of the very few non-biblical sources of Jewish history. This scholarly Cologne edition, in handsome => folio, offers a complete compilation of his works presented in the original Greek with Latin translation side-by-side on each page. The volume begins with the Antiquities of the Jews, translated into Latin and edited by Sigmund Gelen (1497–1554), who also offers a biography of Josephus, based on his works, and the Against Apion. The Jewish War appears as translated and edited by Rufinus of Aquileia (A.D. 345–410), and Josephus's history of the Maccabean Rebellion is translated and edited by => Erasmus of Rotterdam. In the five-part appendix are the Aristeas de LXX Interpretibus in Greek and Latin, translated into the latter by Matthias Garbatius; Ad Epitomen Aristeæ; a variorum of Book VII of the Jewish War and the Maccabean Rebellion based on the MSS. in the Leipzig collection; a Latin version of the Libelli de Maccabæis by Francisco Combesis; and fragments from the p e r i p a n t a V , ascribed to Josephus, edited by David Hoeschel based upon the work of Stephan le Moyne. Sidenotes refer the reader to important historical details and parallel biblical passages. This edition was compiled from MSS. in the Palatine library and is a revised and improved version of the Geneva edition of 1591. New edition whose achievement is due to Friedrich Sylburg; the first edition of Sylburg seems to have appeared in 1586 in Frankfurt. Two title pages shown in red and black with a large thumbnail title, brand Weidmann printer. Bilingual edition in double column with the Latin look. This edition also contains the chronology of Glarean. Copy of arms of the city of Venice struck on the dishes. Bound in full vellum gilded. Back with nerves decorated with jewels and nets. As an exhibit in red morocco. Double frame net with angular irons, mentoring and second with double net. Vellum dirty, crumpled title page bearing a thin tear without missing foxing and browning scattered, sometimes quite marked. Despite vellum wearing uniforms dirt wove splendid golden weapons of Venice. Hellenistic deemed the sixteenth century, Sylburg was director of Latin and Greek editions of the printing of Wechel in Frankfurt; publishing works of Halicarnassus in Greek and Latin, with many comments, is one of his best achievements. If Antiquities of Rome's most famous work of Halicarnassus (where the author attempts to connect the first Rome to Greece), bears the Latin translation next to Sylburg, it is not just the rhetoric, only in Greek. The extraordinary Sir William Petty (1623-1687) was a man of many parts: anatomist, physician, professor of music, inventor, statistician, Member of Parliament, demographer, cartographer, one of the founding members of the Royal Society, and the author of many books, including this groundbreaking application of statistics to the study of economics: "... The novelty in Petty's approach was to quantify ... by abstracting numbers and using these as the basis of calculation, whether of profit and loss in his own Irish ironworks or English trades and industries, he constructed the method known as political arithmetic which was widely copied in the later seventeenth century (and beyond). In addition, by isolating such issues as the velocity of circulation, the difference between the natural and market price of a commodity, and the theory of economic surplus, he established important themes and methods for classical economists ..." (ODNB).

NEWTON, Sir Isaac.
First printing, very rare, of these letters of Newton which Koyré has described as "one of the most precious and important documents for the study and interpretation of Newtonian thought" (Koyré, p. 202). Newton here gives his views on the nature of gravity, on the formation of the solar system, on action-at-a-distance, and much else. He even foresaw in these letters the modern theory of galaxy formation (see below). Newton had been very careful to exclude such speculative 'philosophical' comments from <i>Principia</i>: in its second edition he famously proclaimed "<i>Hypotheses non fingo</i>," or "I feign no hypotheses." Famous Newtonians such as Samuel Clarke and William Whiston would eventually give the Boyle lectures. The first "Boyle lecturer" was the theologian Richard Bentley (1662-1742), who would eventually become the Master of Newton's <i>alma mater</i>, Trinity College, Cambridge... When preparing his lectures for publication-they had been presented to a public audience in London in 1692-Bentley conferred with Newton, hoping to solicit his help in deciphering enough of the <i>Principia</i> to use its results as a bulwark against atheism. Newton obliged, and a famous correspondence between the two began (eventually p … [Click Below for Full Description]

Johann Lonaeus van den Bosch; Johannes Scheffer; Petronius
1691. Hardcover (Full Leather). Very Good Condition. C. Decker. Later mottled calf. No general title page, no printer or date, apparently a surreptitious edition, attractive engraved title signed C. Decker; near miniature, binding measures 3 7/8" x 2 1/4". Old signature crossed out on verso of first section title with browning, unmarked internally otherwise. Some editions of the same material (lacking the final section) appear with a title dated 1590 (though presumed to be later), but this collection can be dated to ca. 1691 when the spurious fragment of the Satyricon "found" during the sacking of Belgrade in 1688 was first published. It appears here in the final section. The fragment was the source of much debate, even Leibniz weighed in, and though found to be fallacious, was reprinted and included in editions into the 20th century. 58, 87, [1], 502, (39) p. Size: 32mo. Scattered foxing, but text mostly clean. Illustrator: C. Decker. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo. Category: Erotica; Antiquarian & Rare. Inventory No: 043196.

[Rawson, Edward, and Samuel Sewall]:
Printed in the Year 1691. Boston: Re-printed and sold by Isaiah Thomas, 1773.. 59pp. Antique-style three-quarter speckled calf and marbled boards, spine gilt extra, leather label. Very good. The second printing, following the extremely rare 1691 Boston edition, which is rated a "d" in Howes. The present edition is itself rated a "b" in terms of rarity by Howes. The great patriot printer, Isaiah Thomas, was no doubt asking his fellow New Englanders to draw inevitable comparisons between the oppressive administration of 17th-century Massachusetts governor, Edmund Andros and their own day. Andros outraged the Puritans of Massachusetts by enforcing unpopular British laws, restricting town meetings, promoting the Church of England, and other seemingly intolerable acts. Thomas published this edition in the wake of the Boston Tea Party, and the significance and timeliness of this pamphlet would be self-evident to any American of patriotic leanings. Authorship has been ascribed to Increase Mather, but the "To the Reader" is signed with the initials "E.R." and "S.S." Edward Rawson was the longtime Massachusetts colonial secretary, and Samuel Sewall was a prominent Boston merchant, jurist, publisher, and diarist. HOWES R79, "b." SABIN 46732. EVANS 12973.
