BOSSUET, Jacques Benigne
Paris: Guillaume Desprez, 1691. 1691 Bossuet Variations Protestant vs Catholic Propaganda Huguenot Reformation"The greatest weakness of all weaknesses is to fear too much to appear weak."― Jacques BossuetJacques Bossuet was a French bishop known for his anti-protestant sermons and speeches. He was highly favored by Louis XIV for his views that the king was divinely appointed by God. Many scholars agree that Bossuet's most famous and important work was his 'Variations of the Protestant Church;' a work that focused on the lack of structure and organization within the Protestant Church. This work began a literary battle between Catholics and Protestants in which Protestants began identifying flaws and problems in the Catholic Church. This fight drew the attention other important figures such as Liebniz.Item number: #9737Price: $550BOSSUET, Jacques BénigneHistoire des variations des eglises protestantesA Paris : chez Guillaume Desprez, 1691.Details: · Collation: Complete with all pages; 4 volumeso Vol. I - [64], 435o Vol. II - [10], 465o Vol. III - [8], 498o Vol. IV - [8], 406, 84· Language: French· Binding: Leather; tight & secure· Size: ~6.75in X 4in (17cm x 10cm)Our Guarantee:Very Fast. SCHABOL, Jean Roger and Antoine-Nicolas DEZALLIER D'ARGENVILLE.
Rare third edition of a practical arboricultural treaty by Father Schabol (1691-1768), first published in 1770 and edited by Antoine-Nicolas Dezallier d'Argenville (1723-1796) based on the author's manuscripts. Schabol was the author of Dictionnaire pour la théorie et la pratique du jardinage (1767), based on the very influential gardeners handbook La théorie et la pratique du jardinage (1709) by Antoine-Joseph Dezallier d'Argenville, who was Antoine-Nicolas's father. This was one of the most popular general text books on garden architecture in the first half of the 18th century. It has a "complicated" bibliography (Hunt 421), and the present publication by his son makes matters worse. In short, Schabol wrote a new version in manuscript, which was finished and published as two separate titles, Practique and Théorie, by the son of the original author. Hunt mistakenly names Schabol as the publisher and Antoine-Nicolas as the author. It consists of a succession of small treatises, mostly on the cultivation of trees, specifically on sicknesses of trees, cultivation of orange trees, thistles, melons, mushrooms, cauliflowers, strawberries, grape vines, management of vineyards, and more. The 14 anonymous etched plates depict trees and the ways to prune them, including tools. The last plate shows different ways to manage a vineyard. The plates are etched a bit clumsily.Cf. Arnold Arboretum I, p. 626-627; Hunt 421, 611; Nat. Agricultural Library (U.S.), Library List 1968 XC, pp. 83-84 (all noting other editions); not in Nissen.

MACHIAVELLI, Niccolo
Amsterdam: Henri Desbordes, 1691. 1691 Discourses on LIVY by Niccolo Machiavelli with INFAMOUS KING Provenance "Never attempt to win by force what can be won by deception." ― Niccolò MachiavelliNiccolo Machiavelli is one of the most important figures in 15th- and early 16th-century Renaissance philosophy. His works helped define what has become political science. His most famous work "The Prince" has infamously coined the term 'Machiavellianism' regarding politics and dishonest politicians."The Discourses on Livy" is a treatise on the classical history of early Ancient Rome. While there are elements of historical fact, Machiavelli wrote this book to illustrate how a republic government should be started and managed, rather than how it was managed by the Romans. This book includes one of the earliest examples of the concepts of 'checks and balances.'Interestingly, this copy was a part of the library of Orélie-Antoine de Tounens, the infamous adventurer who proclaimed by a decree on November 17, 1860 that Araucanía and Patagonia did not depend of any other states and that a Kingdom of Araucanía and Patagonia was founded with himself as King under the name Orélie-Antoine I.Item number: #9867Price: $950MACHIAVELLI, NiccoloDiscours politiques de Machiavel : sur la I decade de Tite-Live ... SENDIVOGIUS (Michel)]. Le Cosmopolite
Laurent D'Houry, Paris, 1691. Cfr. Henry Maydman
London: William Bonny, 1691. Very Good, nicely rebacked with new spine. Binding good and strong. Some typical signs of minor wear. Please see photos and full description. Up for sale is this very rare antique 1691 leather bound copy of Henry Maydman's, "Naval Speculations, and Maritime Politicks." The title page goes on to say, "Being a Modest and Brief discourse of the Royal Navy of England: of Its Oeconomy and Government, and A Projection for an everlasting Seminary of Seamen, by a Royal Maritime Hospital. With A Project for a royal fishery. Also Necessary Measures in the present War with France, &c." The book is overall in very good condition with just some minor and typical signs of wear and age. It has been nicely rebacked with a new leather spine. The leather covers have some scuffing and wear with some corner wear and edge wear. The binding of the book is good and strong. The book is illustrated with a nice frontispiece portrait of Maydman. There is a very minor & very tiny hole to the portrait face which is approximately the size of the tip of a pen. As issued by the publisher, there are a couple of printing errors to some page numbers. However, the content is correct and the book is complete. The interior is toned from age with some scattered light foxing. Along with that there is likely the very occasional page with some kind of other minor imperfection such as a minor bit of soiling or grubbiness, creased page corner, light wrinkle, tiny chip or tear, etc. Generally though, it's a very nice copy. The book measures approximately 6 5/8 inches by 4 1/2 inches and … [Click Below for Full Description]
