Polyaenus.; Justus Vultejus; Pancratius Maasvicius; Isaac Casaubo
1691 Greek Polyaenus Military Stratagems in War Marcus Aurelius Macedonia Very Rare / Parallel Greek & Latin text! Polyaenus, or Polyenus, was a 2nd-century Macedonian author, known best for his Stratagems in War, which has been preserved. The Suda calls him a rhetorician, and Polyaenus himself writes that he was accustomed to plead causes before the emperor. He dedicated Stratagems in War to Marcus Aurelius (161–180) and Verus (161–169), while they were engaged in the Parthian war (162–165), about 163 CE, at which time he was too old to accompany them in their campaigns. Bekker, Balthasar
zus. 1036 S. Ln. Thick 12mo, contemporary full mottled calf, front cover stamped with coat-of-arms of France in gilt, rebacked with elaborately gilt-decorated spine laid down, raised bands, red morocco spine label, marbled endpapers. $2800.Later edition of this French breviary in Latin, handsomely bound in contemporary calf-gilt with the Bourbon royal arms of Louis XV “le bien-aimé” tooled in gilt on the front cover. In the year 1744, while hastening from his conquests in Flanders during the war of the Austrian Succession to assist Alsace, Louis XV was felled by a malady at Metz which threatened to cut short his reign. According to the Abrégé Chronologique de l'Histoire de France, ""At the news of this, Paris, all in terror, seemed a city taken by storm: the churches resounded with supplications and groans; the prayers of priests and people were every moment interrupted by their sobs: and it was from an interest so dear and tender that this surname of Bien-aimé fashioned itself, a title higher still than all the rest which this great Prince has earned"" (Paris, 1775). Louis XV spent five days in October, 1744 recuperating from this illness in Strasbourg. Despite the resounding victory shortly thereafter at Fontenoy on 11 May 1745, Louis XV's reputation from then on was in decline. CORONELLI, Vincenzo
Venice. unbound. Map. Uncolored engraving. Sheet measures 17 3/4" x 24". This gorgeous circa 1691 map of the Old World is by Vincenzo Coronelli. Dedicated to Jacobo Marcello, the map is based on classical geography and covers the Eastern Hemisphere including the continents of Europe, most of Asia and Africa. The northeast parts of Asia, China and Japan are not included. Africa is only depicted as far south as the Tropic of Capricorn. A series of rings surround the map noting climate zones, degrees of latitude and various other information. The 12 zodiac signs are noted on the outer edge of the circles. The lower corners includes explanations while the upper corners show dedications and a coat of arms. The map is in good condition with minor wear and some toning along the original centerfold. Original plate mark is visible. Vincenzo Coronelli (1650-1718) was a Franciscan priest and renowned mathematician and cartographer. He was appointed official Cosmographer to the Venetian Republic in 1685 and founded the world's earliest geographic society, L'Accademia Cosmografica degli Argonauti. He was known best for his globes, which he made for prominent rulers such as Louis XIV and the Duke of Parma. This map is an excellent example of his work.

Two title pages shown in red and black with a large thumbnail title, brand Weidmann printer. Bilingual edition in double column with the Latin look. This edition also contains the chronology of Glarean.Copy of arms of the city of Venice struck on the dishes.Bound in full vellum gilded. Back with nerves decorated with jewels and nets. As an exhibit in red morocco. Double frame net with angular irons, mentoring and second with double net. Vellum dirty, crumpled title page bearing a thin tear without missing foxing and browning scattered, sometimes quite marked. Despite vellum wearing uniforms dirt wove splendid golden weapons of Venice.Hellenistic deemed the sixteenth century, Sylburg was director of Latin and Greek editions of the printing of Wechel in Frankfurt; publishing works of Halicarnassus in Greek and Latin, with many comments, is one of his best achievements. If Antiquities of Rome's most famous work of Halicarnassus (where the author attempts to connect the first Rome to Greece), bears the Latin translation next to Sylburg, it is not just the rhetoric, only in Greek. Impensis Mauritii Georgii Weidmanni Lipsiae (Leipsig) 1691 2 parties en un Vol. In folio (24x38cm) (16) 792pp. 169pp. (1) (2bc.) ; (12) 280pp. 94pp. relié

HAPPEL, Eberhard Werner.
Hamburg: Thomas von Wiering, 1683-, 1691. Five volumes, quarto, 196 engraved and woodcut plates (some folding), title-pages printed in red and black, woodcut textual illustrations and initials; bound in contemporary vellum, titles lettered on spine. A fine set of Happel's remarkable book of wonders, an endlessly informative series filled with the newest and most sensational news from around the world: 'a miscellany of popular information, containing short notices of curious phenomena in every part of the globe, as well as of curious historical events. The notices of American matters are numerous in all the volumes' (Sabin).Among the many wonders here described, the double-page map of the world showing ocean currents is particularly notable. Showing the entire globe from Greenland in the north to the "Süd-Land", this map is a good instance of popular interest in the mapping of the world, including the putative outline of Terra Australis: 'an important early representation of oceanographic phenomena. It illustrates Kircher's idea that there are chasms in the depths of the sea into which the water flows, then percolates through the earth and up to the tops of mountains' (National Maritime Museum, Greenwich).Happel (1647-1690) was a writer and journalist, and one of the most-widely read novelists of his time. His so-called "endless novels" with their picaresque attention to detail relied on his omnivorous fascination with social history, scientific discovery, and other novelties from around the world. This remarkable collection of "curiosities" was probably his most significant … [Click Below for Full Description]

[TASMAN] CORONELLI, Vincenzo.
Venice: circa, 1691. Engraved map, 450 x 615 mm., mounted. A very fine map of the Eastern Hemisphere by the great Venetian cartographer Coronelli, which combines 'the most up-to-date cartographic information with elegant engraving and restrained accompanying decoration' (Shirley).Coronelli (1650-1718) was Italy's finest seventeenth-century cartographer, famous for a pair of globes he made for Louis XIV. He was a member of the Franciscan order, of which he became general, and founder of the learned society Accademia Cosmografica degli Argonauti. Coronelli is highly regarded for his tireless efforts of cartographic research. He was involved in the production of some four hundred maps all of which he drew, engraved and printed. This Eastern Hemisphere map features a decorative coat-of-arms and descriptive text with astrological symbols at the side. Australia is reasonably well delineated with the discoveries of Tasman's second voyage taken into account. Notes refer to the discoveries of "Terra de Concordia" (1618), "Terra d'Edels" (1619), "Terra de Lewin" (1622), "Terra di Pietro Nuyts" (1627), as well as the island of "San Francisco" (off the south coast, mapped by Nuyts and Thijssen), as well as generally the "Terra di Diemen" and "Terra di Arnhem". Also marked are the "Rocher de Frederic Outman" (Houtmans Abrolhos, referring to the shoals on which the Batavia wrecked in 1629) and, just to their south, "Isole d'Edels Turtel Duyf" (the Turtle Dove Shoals, mapped by Hessel Gerritsz in 1627).A massive "Terra Australe Incognita" dominates the bottom of the map, but is here little … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Wilkins, J[ohn]
London: printed for Ric. Baldwin, 1691. 8vo. pp. [14], 295, [1] (publisher's ads); engraved frontispiece portrait, engraved and woodcut illustrations in text; modern mottled calf, gilt spine with green morocco label; early ink signature on title page, a little light foxing, small nick to front cover. Overall a very good, clean copy. Wilkins (1614-1672) was a prominent figure in science during the most eventful period in modern English history -- the years just before the Long Parliament to the decade of the Restoration and the formation of the Royal Society. His best known works are the present one, two popular astronomical works defending and publicizing the new world picture of Copernicus, Kepler and Galileo (The Discovery of a World in the Moone, 1638; and A Discourse tending to prove that 'tis probable our Earth is one of the planets, 1640:, and An Essay Towards a Real Character, and A Philosophical Language (1668), a pioneering work on artificial intelligence and universal language. "In his own time Wilkins' stature and influence were very considerable...his influence was divided between such men as Hooke, Boyle, and Ray on the one hand, Tillotson, Stillingfleet, and Patrick on the other. In this sense he shaped the temper of England in the latter half of the seventeenth century and left a significant impression on the eighteenth." (DSB) The present work is "the first English text-book of mathematics." (Taylor, Mathematical Practitioners of Tudor and Stuart England, 181). The first part deals with the balance, lever, wheel, pulley, wedge and screw, together with their … [Click Below for Full Description]
