GALE, Thomae
Oxoniae: E Theatro Sheldoniano, 1691. Hardcover. Good. 2 vols. vol. 1: [22], 796, [44]p; vol. 2: [11], 594, [29]p. 32.5 cm folios in full leather. Gold gilt on spines. Bookplates on front boards from John Campbell, Esq. of Stackpole Court in the County of Pembroke. Ex-library with only a small label attached to the lower corner of the front boards in each volume. Boards detached from book but binding remains intact and strong. 1 sheet from the index of volume two has been cut out of the book. No other pages missing. Pages clean. Text unmarked. Endpapers soiled. Because the existing spines are quite beautiful, with some attention to reattaching the boards the aesthetic value of the volumes would be restored for the right collector. Sold "as is." Thomas Gale (d. 1702) was a classicist and fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge. While more familiar today as the author of the inscription on the London Monument that blames Catholics for starting the Great Fire of 1666, his research into early British history, as found in this important work of scholarship was the basis of his academic career.

Incisione in rame, in ottimo stato di conservazione. Uncommom map from "Il Mercurio Geografico" published in Rome by Giacomo de Rossi. PETTY, William.
London: for Robert Clavel, and Hen. Mortlock, 1691 - Octavo (166 × 106 mm), with imprimatur leaf and final adverts. Contemporary sprinkled sheep, double rule blind stamped border to covers, paper label. Spine faded and chipped at head, corners slightly worn, a little surface abrasion, still a very attractive copy. Engraved armorial bookplate to inside of front board, later small private library stamp to title verso. Acquisition note "Cost 5 pence at an auction Lond. July 1705" to front endpaper. Second edition, first published the previous year, of what is by title at least Petty's key work, posthumously published. After training as a doctor and being admitted to the College of Physicians, Petty worked for many years as an administrator in Ireland, and was a founding member of the Royal Society. He has gone down in history as the originator of statistical analysis under the name of political arithmetic. He established important themes and methods for classical economists, and his works provide abundant detail of the physical and human geography of seventeenth-century Ireland and England. The work was originally published with the date 1690 (the initial licence leaf is dated 7 November 1690). "Apart from dropping a comma in the fourth line in some copies and the change of date, the title-page is identical with that of [the edition of 1690] and is printed from the same setting of type. The imprimatur and the rest of the book have been reset line-by-line including the Errata, though some of them have been corrected." This is the second edition which was published in the same year as the first edition and with the same text but slightly reset resulting in 285 pages rather than the 299 of the first edition. The lovely binding is in fine condition and the contents have only very minor foxing. The book comes with a tan morocco slip case signed R Wallis, Binder.Joannes De Laet (1593-1649), a Flemish naturalist and geographer, was Director of the Dutch West Indies Company. De Laet's description of the Moghul empire was published by Elzevier as part of their "Res publicae" series. It used a variety of sources, including a number of English works and, in particular, Francisco Pelsaert's "Remonstrantie", a 1626 report to the VOC directors on the state of commerce in India. "Remonstrantie" is regarded as "the most detailed and interesting account of Moghul India written by a Dutch observer". It was, however, never published, so De Laet's work is "the earliest published source for Pelsaert's description of India". (Donald Lach and Edwin Van Kley: Asia in the Making of Europe)
