MACKENZIE, Sir George
London printed for J. Hindmarsh at the Golden Ball in Cornhill, 1691. 4to., 66 + (2)pp., including the final leaf I2 (advertisements recto/licence verso), recent plain dark blue cloth, neatly lettered. A fine, crisp, copy. First edition. George Mackenzie (1630-1714) became a politician 'of rare agility and experience. Highly intelligent, shrewd, and personable, Mackenzie managed through four reigns to retain high office and to impress the monarch with his ability, which was considerable. This flexibility, while politically admirable, aroused the hatred of many in Scotland and England who regarded him as little more than a trimmer. His career began after the execution of Charles I when he was commissioned to raise troops against Parliament, but defeat led to exile on the continent until 1660 and the restoration. In association with Middleton, Mackenzie learned his politics in the turbulent world of restoration monarchy. He secured the position of a Lord of the Session with the title of Lord Tarbat, but a quarrel with Lauderdale meant loss of office and power until a reconciliation and the office of Lord Clerk Register was effected in 1681. From 1681 through 1688 Mackenzie dominated Scottish politics and Scotland for Charles and then for James. His career during those years did not endear him to the more stern Presbyterians who regarded him as little less than a religious and political traitor.' GALE, Thomae
Oxoniae: E Theatro Sheldoniano, 1691. Hardcover. Good. 2 vols. vol. 1: [22], 796, [44]p; vol. 2: [11], 594, [29]p. 32.5 cm folios in full leather. Gold gilt on spines. Bookplates on front boards from John Campbell, Esq. of Stackpole Court in the County of Pembroke. Ex-library with only a small label attached to the lower corner of the front boards in each volume. Boards detached from book but binding remains intact and strong. 1 sheet from the index of volume two has been cut out of the book. No other pages missing. Pages clean. Text unmarked. Endpapers soiled. Because the existing spines are quite beautiful, with some attention to reattaching the boards the aesthetic value of the volumes would be restored for the right collector. Sold "as is." Thomas Gale (d. 1702) was a classicist and fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge. While more familiar today as the author of the inscription on the London Monument that blames Catholics for starting the Great Fire of 1666, his research into early British history, as found in this important work of scholarship was the basis of his academic career.

(9 x 16) PRIMA EDIZIONE. (Chadenat). Boucher de la Richarderie VI-21; Brunet III-916; Chadenat 3272; Leclerc 746; Ternaux-Compans 1053.
