All six volumes of the "Journals" are very fine, & SIGNED, in like slipcases. "Remote Beyond Compare" is fine & SIGNED but, did not come w/slipcase so we jury-rigged one that looks good on the shelf but, you can see that it is "home made" from the photos. Except for editors' signatures there are NO other marks or writing in any of the books. All books have mylar covers in addition to the slipcases. "Remote Beyond Compare - Letters of don Diego de Vargas to His Family ..." is NOT meant to be part of the Journals but, is complementary to them. It is a limited Collectors Edition and is #3 of 100 issued, and is signed by ALL the contributors. The "Journals" are part of a limited, SIGNED set by the principal contributors (John Kessell, Rick Hendricks, Meredith Dodge and Larry Miller*). This set is #3 of 25 so it numerically matches the #3 of "Remote". But, in addition to the signatures of the main contributors, the books are signed by ALL other contributors save for Ignacio Avellaneda, (Associate Editor) "To the Royal Crown Restored", who died before publication - (SEE PHOTOS). PETTY, William.
London: for Robert Clavel, and Hen. Mortlock, 1691 - Octavo (172 × 106 mm), with imprimatur leaf and final adverts. Contemporary mottled sheep, red morocco spine label. Head of spine and three corners neatly patched in sprinkled calf. First four leaves slightly shorter at head. A crisp, clean copy. Second edition, first published the previous year, of what is by title at least Petty's key work, posthumously published. After training as a doctor and being admitted to the College of Physicians, Petty worked for many years as an administrator in Ireland, and was a founding member of the Royal Society. He has gone down in history as the originator of statistical analysis under the name of political arithmetic. He established important themes and methods for classical economists, and his works provide abundant detail of the physical and human geography of seventeenth-century Ireland and England. The work was originally published with the date 1690 (the initial licence leaf is dated 7 November 1690), and is here re-printed with the first four leaves reset and the title dated 1691. Goldsmiths' 2869; Keynes 35; Kress 1770; Wing P1933.

WILKINS, John
1691. WILKINS,John. Mathematical magick, or, The wonders that may be performed by mechanical geometry : in two books concerning mechanical powers [and] motions : being one of the most easie, pleasant, useful (and yet most neglected) part of mathematicks : not before treated of in this language.London, Printed for Ric. Baldwin near the Oxford-Arms, Warwick -Lane 1691 the Fourth Edition [14], 295, [1] p. : front. (portrait of Wilkins), illustrated. Bound in full sprinkled leather, rebacked sympathetically and now preserved in a folding box.Internally tidy and clean. Pen numerical shelfmark inscription to the title page. This is a wonderful work, notable for its suggestions about how man might fly.Wilkins ( a Bishop) hedges his bets here.He suggests initially that Spirits or Angels might help- well he would, wouldn't he.He then rather spoils the mental picture by suggesting "the help of fowls", adding " By wings fastened immediately to the body" and finishing with the inspired "By a flying Chariot".This is a tidy copy of this classic work. TOURNAI. MANUSCRIT.
1691. 485 x 663 mm.

Seville: Lucas Martin, 1691. [64],465,[33] pp. plus portrait (not found in all copies). Contemporary vellum, manuscript title on spine, leather ties. New endpapers. A touch of light foxing. FF signature leaves bound out of order, with FF3-FF4 bound before FF1-FF2, and [FF7-FF8] bound before [FF5-FF6]. Very good. A later printing of the famed Bishop Palafox's spiritual autobiography, first published in Brussels in 1682, and following another Brussels 1682 printing, and an edition done in Barcelona in 1687. Juan Palafox y Mendoza (1600- 59) was born in Navarre, educated at Salamanca and appointed a member of the Council of the Indies. He later became a priest, and in 1639 was made Bishop of Puebla de Los Angeles. Palafox arrived in Mexico in 1640 and soon ran afoul of the local Franciscans, Dominicans, and Augustinians, whose many exemptions and privileges he looked upon as encroachments on his episcopal jurisdiction. In 1642 he was made Archbishop of New Spain, and for a brief time that same year he was acting Viceroy of Mexico, during which he instituted financial reforms and sought to eradicate idolatry among the Mexican natives. As bishop, Palafox distinguished himself by his efforts to protect the Native Americans from Spanish cruelty, forbidding any methods of conversion other than persuasion. Palafox was also a patron of the arts, and under his tenure Puebla became the music center of New Spain. He also established the Biblioteca Palafoxiana, a library that continues to this day. In 1647 he came into conflict with the Jesuits, who he believed were undermining … [Click Below for Full Description]
