Marracci, Ludovicus.
2 nd. edition of volume I. (Only volume I of 2 volumes). Folio [3] Bl., 45 S., [2] Bl., 46 S., [8] Bl., 81 S., [1] Bl., 94 S., [5] Bl., 126 S., [2] Bl. Contemporary vellum. Good condition. The rare first volume contains a biography / detailed description the life of Muhammed (24 pages), a resumee of the principal thoughts of the Islam with several sources based on islamic teachers and it contains as well the "refutations" of each sutra, given first in Arabic, followed in Latin translation. Te. A ground-breaking work of Quranic scholarship, a valuable source for the study of the Quran and an essential source for European views of Islam.

Parisiis, apud Arnoldum Seneuse., 1691. Second edition. Quarto. pp [xxiv], 592, [v]. Fine engraved frontispiece. Engraved head- and tailpieces. Eighteenth century binding of full panelled calf. Louis Ellies Du Pin (1657-1719) was born into a noble Norman family, one of his relatives being the poet Jean Racine. His theology degree at the Sorbonne led him into careful study of the writings of the Church Fathers and thereby into a new methodology of writing about them, involving biography, literary criticism and history. Perhaps inevitably, this groundbreaking work caused a good deal of controversy and heated debate.Small contemporary ownership signature on front free endpaper. Some rubbing to spine. Very good indeed. A bright copy.

MAYDMAN, Henry
London: Printed by William Bonny, and sold by Sam. Manship, 1691. [32], 348pp, [2]. With an engraved portrait frontispiece and a terminal errata leaf. Without terminal blank. Contemporary gilt-tooled speckled calf, later rebacked, later contrasting black morocco lettering-piece. Rubbed, particularly to joints. Later plain endpapers, armorial bookplate of 'Thomas Foley' to FEP, with his ownership inscription to verso of frontispiece, very short closed tear to title - not touching text, worm-trail to upper margin throughout - occasionally touching running-title, slight loss to lower corner of P1, lower corner of Z1 repaired, lightly foxed. An extensive monograph critiquing the administration of the Royal Navy, with proposals for the improvement of the service, by Henry Maydman, purser and mayor of Portsmouth for 1710. The work provides a succinct portrait of the economic and organisational makeup of the navy, before presenting detailed arguments for revisions and the introduction of new procedure. Maydman, for example, contends that greater provision ought to be made for poor male children in order to better facilitate recruitment; that the establishment of navy controlled fisheries for the purposes of rations supply be implemented; that trade with France be continued despite ongoing conflict; and that, this being a rather elaborate suggestion, captured French sailors be employed fishing the coasts of Newfoundland. The treatise was presumably written, at least in part, in response to the French defeat of the Anglo-Dutch fleet at the Battle of Beachy Head the year prior to pub … [Click Below for Full Description]

PETTY, William.
London: for Robert Clavel, and Hen. Mortlock, 1691 - Octavo (166 × 106 mm), with imprimatur leaf and final adverts. Contemporary sprinkled sheep, double rule blind stamped border to covers, paper label. Spine faded and chipped at head, corners slightly worn, a little surface abrasion, still a very attractive copy. Engraved armorial bookplate to inside of front board, later small private library stamp to title verso. Acquisition note "Cost 5 pence at an auction Lond. July 1705" to front endpaper. Second edition, first published the previous year, of what is by title at least Petty's key work, posthumously published. After training as a doctor and being admitted to the College of Physicians, Petty worked for many years as an administrator in Ireland, and was a founding member of the Royal Society. He has gone down in history as the originator of statistical analysis under the name of political arithmetic. He established important themes and methods for classical economists, and his works provide abundant detail of the physical and human geography of seventeenth-century Ireland and England. The work was originally published with the date 1690 (the initial licence leaf is dated 7 November 1690). "Apart from dropping a comma in the fourth line in some copies and the change of date, the title-page is identical with that of [the edition of 1690] and is printed from the same setting of type. The imprimatur and the rest of the book have been reset line-by-line including the Errata, though some of them have been corrected." MACKENZIE, Sir George
London printed for J. Hindmarsh at the Golden Ball in Cornhill, 1691. 4to., 66 + (2)pp., including the final leaf I2 (advertisements recto/licence verso), recent plain dark blue cloth, neatly lettered. A fine, crisp, copy. First edition. George Mackenzie (1630-1714) became a politician 'of rare agility and experience. Highly intelligent, shrewd, and personable, Mackenzie managed through four reigns to retain high office and to impress the monarch with his ability, which was considerable. This flexibility, while politically admirable, aroused the hatred of many in Scotland and England who regarded him as little more than a trimmer. His career began after the execution of Charles I when he was commissioned to raise troops against Parliament, but defeat led to exile on the continent until 1660 and the restoration. In association with Middleton, Mackenzie learned his politics in the turbulent world of restoration monarchy. He secured the position of a Lord of the Session with the title of Lord Tarbat, but a quarrel with Lauderdale meant loss of office and power until a reconciliation and the office of Lord Clerk Register was effected in 1681. From 1681 through 1688 Mackenzie dominated Scottish politics and Scotland for Charles and then for James. His career during those years did not endear him to the more stern Presbyterians who regarded him as little less than a religious and political traitor.'
