KEITH, GEORGE
1691. KEITH, GEORGE. The Presbyterian and Independent Visible Churches in New-England and Else-where, Brought to the Test.... London: For Thomas Northcott, 1691. 8vo. [10], 230 p. Modern full calf in skillful period style. A very nice copy. Reprint of the essentially unobtainable 1689 edition printed in Philadelphia. Keith had come to America, and New Jersey, as surveyor-general of East New Jersey, where, among other tasks, he established the boundary between East and West New Jersey--still known today as the Keith Line. In 1688 he traveled to New England to spread the Quaker faith, and to dispute the Puritan divines. On his return he had William Bradford print this work, which in part is a reply to Nathaniel Morton's New-England's Memorial and Increase Mather's Essay for the Illustrious Providences. This London reprint is the first obtainable edition. Wing K191; European Americana 691/75; ESTC R21261.

Villars, Abbé de (Nicolas-Pierre-Henri de Montfaucon)]
Pierre Marteau, Cologne. [ca. 1691 and ca. 1703.] 16mo. Two volumes in one. 155;[2],150pp. In French. 18th or early 19th-century three-quarter calf and marbled boards, gilt spine rules, gilt leather label. First title page printed in red and black with armillary sphere device. Early inscriptions in flyleaf. Closely trimmed at fore-edge, touching some characters of text (with no loss). Joints expertly repaired, binding rubbed and moderately worn. Very good. Early edition of the best known work of Henri de Montfaucon, Abbé de Villars (1635-1673), for which he is said to have been murdered by the Rosicrucians. This edition adds the "Réponse à la lettre de Monseigneur" to the 1670 original text and is bound with a "posthumous" sequel published ca. 1703 by Pierre Mortier in Amsterdam. The primary work, a satirical dialogue between a Cabalist and a skeptic, addresses the Paracelsan idea of the marriage of elemental spirits to human beings. It ostensibly unveiled Rosicrucian secrets, which may be what led to Villars’s assasination on the road to Lyon in 1673. Despite its satirical nature, the book has been treated as a source for esoteric knowledge over the generations to the present day. F. Leigh Gardner describes it in that spirit in his BIBLIOTHECA ROSICRUCIANA: "The chief figure in it is said to be taken from G. F. Borri, who is the imaginary Count de Gabalis; although written in a satirical vein yet it contains profound truths; possibly the author found it necessary in those days to disseminate knowledge in this fashion. It is also stated that Pope in his work, ‘The Rape of t … [Click Below for Full Description]

[HALE, Thomas &] Sir William PETTY.
London, Printed for James Atwood and are to be Sold by Ralph Simpson, , 1691. AN APPEAL FOR INVESTMENT IN ENGLISH SHIPPING - THE MACCLESFIELD COPY Duodecimo (149 x 90mm). Contemporary panelled calf, neatly rebacked, red sprinkled edges. 2 folding tables. Near contemporary ownership inscription, "Thos. Smith" to the title page. Perhaps Captain Thomas Smith, "captain in the navy and renegade", who was "sentenced to death, and … executed on 18 June 1708 with all the barbarities directed by law" for serving with the French navy in several descents on the coast. Bookplate and embossed stamps of the library of the Earls of Macclesfield at Shirburn Castle. Endpapers browned through paste-action, light browning throughout and some foxing, but overall very good. First edition. An impassioned, if sometimes diffuse, appeal for investment in England's maritime future, and the not entirely unrelated business interests of Messrs. Hale. A discursive essay which draws support for Hale's innovations from a wide variety of sources, technical and moral, from Phineas Pett to Galileo. Sir William Petty, whose Political Arithmetic had given him particular prominence at this time, is invoked by name in the title, but his treatise is very brief (pp. 117-32) and can only be a synopsis. He had delivered a paper on building ships to the Royal Society in 1661. The manuscript of this, which is not known to have survived, was kept by Lord Brunker as too important to be published, and was, according to Keynes, almost certainly the source of the Treatise as printed here. PRONK, Cornelis.
1691. Original washed pen and ink drawing showing a view across the Leidschevaart waterway toward the western city gate of Utrecht, the Catharijnepoort, by Cornelis Pronk (1691-1759). This gate was designed by Paulus Moreelse in 1621, and was the most important western city gate, where the road from The Hague entered the city. It was demolished in the 19th century. The viewpoint of this drawing is situated on the tow path along the Leidschevaart near the second Moesgracht. Visible in the background are from left to right: the St. Jobsgasthuis on the Vleutenseweg, the mill "De Meiboom" on the Paardenveld and the tower of the Jacobikerk.Pronk’s drawings were often copied and many prints were engraved after his work, especially by Hendrik Spilman and Caspar Philips. These engraved views were published by Isaak Tirion in Amsterdam, for example in Spilman’s 'T verheerlykt Nederland (Amsterdam, 1745) and the Utrecht volume (XI) of Tegenwoordige staat der Nederlanden. An anonymous copy of the present Pronk drawing was published in C.C.S. Wilmer's book on drawings of Utrecht.Very fine drawing in good condition.l Cf. C.C.S. REYNING, Jan Erasmus (as told to David van der STERRE).
Zeer aanmerkelijke reysen gedaan door Jan Erasmus Reining, meest in de West-Indien en ook in veel andere deelen des werelds. &c. Amsterdam, Jan ten Hoorn, 1691. 4to. With an engraved frontispiece signed by Caspar Luyken and 6 engraved plates (including 2 folding) one by Jan Luyken (unsigned). 18th-century marbled wrappers. In a modern black cloth clamshell box. [6], "134" [= 136], [6] pp. Rare first and only edition of the heroic exploits of the famous Dutch pirate, privateer and naval officer Jan Erasmus Reyning (1640-1697). His close friend, a Curaçao doctor, wrote down his stories and published them. Reyning's adventurous career began at age ten when he went to sea with his father, who was killed in battle when they served on a privateering ship a couple years later. Jan Erasmus was taken prisoner during the Second Anglo-Dutch War (1665-1667), and went into the service of a French plantation on the island of Hispaniola. Around 1667 he became a buccaneer in the jungles around Santo Domingo, and between 1669 and 1672 he appears to have fought as a privateer captain with French or English letters of marque. He and his partner Jelle Lecat worked with such notorious pirates as Roche Braziliano and Henry Morgan. In 1672, with the Netherlands at war with England and France, he left Spanish service to protect the Dutch colony of Curaçao, earning him a reputation as a sort of Robin Hood and the gratitude of the Dutch West India Company. After returning to the Netherlands he served as an officer in the Dutch marine, dying in a storm in the Bay of Biscay in 1697.An object apparentl … [Click Below for Full Description]

The French diplomat Simon de La Loubère (1642-1729) was appointed as Louis XIV's envoy extraordinary to the court of Siam, and while he stayed in Siam for only three months he diligently and systemically asked questions, "probably stimulated by the Jesuit scientists who accompanied the mission to take more than a passing interest in Siamese cosmology, astronomy, and mathematics" (Lach & Van Kley). Loubère compensated his short stay with a thorough study of earlier writers, referring to twenty-three European authors from Pinto to Gervaise in the first volume and collecting French translations of native works in the second. Besides presenting information on Siam itself, Loubère also incorporates information on India and China and their influence on Siam's past. With the armorial bookplate of Anton Ernst Burckhard van Birckenstein (active 1686-1744) on paste-down. Our copy is therefore complete. With a small library stamp on the recto and verso of the title-page; the usual browning, otherwise in good condition. VD 17, 39:107693D; WorldCat (9 copies); cf. LOUBÈRE, Simon de la.
Du Royaume de Siam. Amsterdam, Abraham Wolfgang, 1691. 2 volumes bound as 1. 12mo. With the same woodcut printer's device on both title-pages, 2 folding engraved maps, 17 double-page engraved plates with printed music, Siamese alphabets, inhabitants etc., 21 full-page engraved plates, engraved headpiece and several woodcut illustrations in text. Contemporary vellum. [8], 436, [2]; [4], 324, [1], [1 blank] pp. Second edition, published in the same years as the first, of a comprehensive work on the history of the kingdom of Siam, "Universally regarded as the finest work on seventeenth-century Thailand" (Wyatt). Very good copy. STCN (6 copies); Walravens 92; cf. Lach & Van Kley III, pp. 1194-1196; Wyatt, "Introduction" i … [Click Below for Full Description]

1691. 8 sheets written on recto and verso. Folio (12 1/2" x 8 3/4") unbound leaves. 1 page written in Náhuatl. The Cabildo, Justice and Aldermen of the Village of Tehuacán testify that Don Gabriel Santiago, cacique of Tehuacán has in his possession documents that belong to the City, starting with the Royal Decree that ordered the founding of Tehuacán over the village of Calcahualco in times of Viceroy Peralta (1566 – 1567), as well as deeds for grants of land and water made by the Viceroys to the City of Tehuacán. He has this papers that he inherited from his father Agustin de Santiago, deceased. He also has other documents: deeds, formalities, sales, and possessions. They ask all these papers be returned to the City, to be stored by the Royal Notary, in a box with 5 keys. They deem these papers necessary to the city, to be able to solve land disputes and land invasions and to be able to give deeds to the landowners. The case is presented to a judge who orders all papers belonging to the City be turned over to the Notary, in possession of Don Gabriel Santiago or any other cacique. He complies, but requests papers of a water dispute in the village of Santa Maria be included in this box. Don Gabriel Santiago testifies he needs those papers, in order to collect tributes from the Indians, and to solve problems that arise in the community. On the back of his testimony there is one page in Nahuatl, signed by the members of the Cabildo. Condition: Edge wear with tears and chips, heal corner damaged [Attributes: First Edition]

Wilmot, Earl of Rochester, John. (1648-80)
London: , 1691. FIRST EDITION of the authentic works. . Octavo:. A truly fine copy in its original speckled calf binding, corners bumped, hinges starting. The text is crisp and in fine shape aside from a tear to the upper margin of the title affecting the printed rule and the top edge of the word "Poems." With the preliminary advertisement leaf for Waller's "Maid's Tragedy" and the usual cancels D3 and D7. Title printed in red and black. This is the first authentic edition of Rochester's poems. The volume was edited by Thomas Rymer who has provided a critical preface, additions, and amendments to correct the pirated editions that had appeared in 1680 and 1685. This is the first edition to include Rochester's tragedy "Valentinian." "During Rochester's lifetime only a few of his writings were printed as broadsides or in miscellanies, but many of his works were known widely from manuscript copies, a considerable number of which seem to have existed... In February of 1690/91, Jacob Tonson, the most reputable publisher of the day, produced a volume entitled 'Poems On Several Occasions.' The appearance of the author's name and title on the title page is significant. It may indicate that this edition was produced with the approval of the Earl's family and friends, and it is possible that they may have intervened to prevent the publication of Saunders's projected edition [license obtained from the Stationer's Company by Saunders in November of 1690, no edition was ever produced]. PRONK, Cornelis.
Jobsgasthuis on the Vleutenseweg, the mill "De Meiboom" on the Paardenveld and the tower of the Jacobikerk.Pronk's drawings were often copied and many prints were engraved after his work, especially by Hendrik Spilman and Caspar Philips. These engraved views were published by Isaak Tirion in Amsterdam, for example in Spilman's 'T verheerlykt Nederland (Amsterdam, 1745) and the Utrecht volume (XI) of Tegenwoordige staat der Nederlanden. An anonymous copy of the present Pronk drawing was published in C.C.S. Wilmer's book on drawings of Utrecht.Very fine drawing in good condition.l Cf. C.C.S. Coignard, 1691. BEKKER, Balthasar
Daniel Van den Dalen, Amsterdam, 1691-93. Thick quarto, Four books in one volume. New front and rear endpapers, Contemporary vellum with a handsome handwritten title on the spine. All four books have been hand-signed by Bekker in ink. One of the most important texts of the Radical Enlightenment” which was published while witches were still being burned in Massachusetts. It caused a furor when it was first published in Holland and the firestorm quickly spread to Germany, France and England - where the book was translated and published within three years of its original appearance in Dutch. The Bewitched World appeared as four books - the first two published in 1691 and the final two in 1693. However, the publication of the first two of these books was preempted by a pirate edition in a single-volume edition which Bekker objected to. He categorically disowned that printing of his book, claiming that the only authorized edition was being published in quarto-sized volumes by Daniel Van den Dalen of Amsterdam. In defense of this position, each copy of the books printed carried an explicit disclaimer page which Bekker personally signed to attest to the fact that this individual copy was authorized and approved by him (8,000 copies by the end of 1693). These four books taken together were “the most monumental and comprehensive investigation of Satan, demonology, spirits, apparitions, magic, enchantment and witchcraft. DROUIN, Vincent Denis
Paris, Guillaume de Lüyne, 1691. 12mo (154 x 87 mm), pp [xvi] 125 [3, Approbation, Privilege, and Errata], with 9 folding engraved plates; a fine copy in contemporary French mottled calf, gilt fleurons on spine, a bit rubbed. First edition of this rare work on the brain and the sense organs. The author, about whom little is known, is described on the title as ‘Maître Chirurgien de l’Hôpital General’. ‘Drouin enjoyed an excellent reputation as a skilled surgeon in the French army and returned to private life to become chief surgeon at Des Petites Maisons in Paris. This work, important in the development of neuroanatomy during the late seventeenth century, is the result of keen observation and careful dissection. In it, Drouin discusses the skull, the brain and its circulation, and the structure of the nose, eye, tongue, and ear. The nine folding plates were engraved from Drouin’s own drawings’ (Heirs of Hippocrates p 247). Drouin clearly relies on his own anatomical dissections, rather than the authority of others. He cites, sometimes critically, Descartes, Duncan, Stensen, Bartholin, and Malpighi. Provenance: manuscript ex libris ‘Pt. Cholet M.DCC.LXXX.IIIII’ [sic] in ink within floral border, and pasted slip in ms,’Philibert Cholet 46’ on front pastedown; a similar ex libris of a book belonging to Cholet appears in a copy of Elie Col de Vilars, Cours de chirurgie dicté aux écoles de Médecine de Paris (Paris 1759) Heirs of Hippocrates 700; Krivatsy 3404; Wellcome II p 487; OCLC records Iowa, NLM, and Minnesota [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[Ottoman Silk Flag]
Rome, Giovanni Francesco Buagni for Francesco Leone, 1691. 4to. 4 pp. With a large woodcut on the title-page. Bound in modern half vellum with papered boards using a red and black Greek liturgical print. Extremely rare description of the silk flag of Grand Vizier Köprülüzade Fazil Mustafa Pasha, captured by the Imperial Army at the Battle of Slankamen (near Belgrade) on 19 August 1691, and its magnificent entrance to Rome, where the victorious Margrave Louis of Baden-Baden (nicknamed "Türkenlouis") sent his prize in triumph as a gift to the Pope, followed by three-day festivities. The flag is pictured by a large woodcut on the title-page. A slight propaganda pamphlet printed on a single bifolium, it contains, in fact, a surprisingly long text of some 2,500 words squeezed into merely three pages in small type. The green brocade flag ensemble, studded with gold, silver, and gems and bearing the embroidered Shahada in Arabic, is described in detail: "E' questo stendardo di color verde, con una striscia di brocato d'oro rosso [.] La palla grande è di argento dorato con due bellissimi rubini nel mezo [.] E poi nella striscia, che attraversa tutto lo stendardo, che è tre teli per lo lungo, vi sono le seguenti parole in lingua Arabica tessute d'oro, a ogni telo le stesse: Non vi è Dio, che un solo Dio, Maometto Apostolo di Dio [.]". - Trimmed rather closely at the outer edge, barely touching the woodcut with partial loss of a single letter in the title. Neatly remargined; the inside of the bifolium (pp. 2-3) is covered with Japanese paper for conservation and reinforcement, preser … [Click Below for Full Description]
