- FINE OLD COLOUR - Decorative example of Coronelli's 2-sheet Cosmographical Chart, published in Venice. Bibliografia: Lago-Rossit, Descriptio Histriae, tav. XCIII, pp. 186-187. In 1690 Vincenzo Coronelli drew this two-sheets map depicting the coasts of Istria and Dalmatia. The map was published both as a single map and as a part of the Island Book of the Atlante Veneto which Coronelli published in Venice in 1696. This engraving depicts the administrative territory of the Adriatic coasts taken between Istria and Albania and it represents one of the first thematic maps about the organizational-administrative scheme of the area, when Dalmatia became part of the Venetian Republic. Vincenzo CORONELLI (Venezia 1650 - 1718)
Houbraken, Arnold (1660-1719):
Amsterdam (?) c. 1690. Format: 148 x 95mm. Amsterdam (?), c. 1690. Stencil, brown ink and wash. Signed in the lower right corner. Arnold Houbraken (1660-1719) was a Dutch painter and engraver of the Golden Age, but also an important biographer of artists. Apart from portraits and biographies of artists, he is known for drawing religious and mythological subjects. The present drawing most likely depicts a scene near the Tower of Babel, illustrating the well-known Biblical myth. The tower is visible in the background, while in the foreground there are 2 scene worth noting: firstly, a group of three well-dressed men, probably architects or scholars are looking through some papers, sitting at a table. Secondly, in the lower part of the drawing there are three children who are holding some sort of round plate or sieve, that contains small objects labelled with various letters or characters, which are falling through a whole in the plate. This is most likely an allussion to the myth of the Babel tower and the variety of languages. While the men are probably discussing plans for the construction of the tower to reach the skies, in the children's play, language is simultaneously being "mixed", confounded. The drawing could have been meant as an illustration, possibly for a Bible. Or it could have been a preparatory sketch. Although Houbraken is better known for this drawings than for his painting, only a few drawings by him have been up for auction in recent times. "I have a soul that like an ample shield Can take in all, and verge enough for more." - Dryden, Don Sebastian Written in 1689 for the Theatre Royal in London, 'Don Sebastian' is one of John Dryden's most successful plays, even after having taking a seven year hiatus from literary composition. Following the aftermath of the political upheaval and the overthrow of King James II during the Glorious Revolution in 1688, Dryden published 'Don Sebastian' to entertain the public. However, this work was not without extreme controversy. Dryden included bizarre themes of incestuous relationships, references to Jacobite and Catholic feuds, political slander, and Laissez-faire religious devotion. This 1890 first book edition was published in London by Hindmarsh. Very rare indeed! [Attributes: First Edition]

This little book is illustrated. There is a book plate inside the front cover for ?.L. Lopes, Exeter College, Oxford. The opposite page has a name I can't quite make out and the date, July 19, 1855, followed by RIP. Jeremy Taylor was a prolific religious writer and other titles are more readily available but this 2nd edition of 1690 is rare and listed in very few libraries. It came from the estate of a Florida book collector's family. It is unassuming and was pushed back in the shelf and I believe simply overlooked by the early birds.
