TAKEBE, Katahiro
Unknown, 1690. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Takebe Katahiro, (1664-1739), Japanese mathematician of the wasan ("Japanese calculation") tradition who extended and disseminated the mathematical research of his teacher Seki Takakazu. Takebe Katahiro's name is given in several different forms including Takebe Kenko and Tatebe Kenko. He served successively two shoguns, Tokugawa Ienobu, initially lord of Kōfu, whom he escorted all along his rise to the supreme position, and Tokugawa Yoshimune. Takebe played a vital role in the development of the Enri (円理, "circle principle") - a crude analogion to the western calculus, obtained power series expansion of (arcsin(x))^{2} in 1722, 15 years earlier than Euler, as the first power series expansion obtained in Wasan, and based on polygon approximation and Richardson extrapolation, about 200 years earlier than Richardson, he computed 41 digits of pi. This 17th century edition contains numerous of illustrations of different mathematical formulae and problems which he intended as a text for students of mathematics particularly to handle polynomials with variable coefficients.

Mattaheus WAGNER
Acquaforte e bulino, circa 1690. Rara. C. Thomas SHADWELL
1690. [Plays, Theatre] ~ SHADWELL, Thomas Psyche: a tragedy, As it is now Acted At Their Majesties Theatre in dorset-garden London. Printed by J. M. for H. Herringman, 1690. Quarto. [8], 54pp, [2]. Later half-vellum, marbled boards, contrasting black morocco lettering-piece. Extremities lightly rubbed and discoloured. Foxed and brown, contemporary inked numerals to head of title-page, occasional shaving to running titles. The second edition of one of the earliest operatic entertainments presented in English, Thomas Shadwell's (c.1640-1692) adaptation of Moliere's five act tragicomedy of the same name. First performed and printed in 1675, Psyche integrated music and dancing into the drama in a way which proved formative for English opera, and for which Shadwell produced the first dramatic musical score to be published in England. Shadwell's prolific and critically successful career was both cut short, and eventually raised beyond all expectation, by political crises. During the final years of the reign of James II, Shadwell became a firm enemy of his earlier friend John Dryden, and fell squarely in with the Protestant party. It is therefore unsurprising that following the success of the Glorious Revolution, and Dryden's refusal to swear allegiance to the new monarchs, Shadwell replaced him as Poet Laureate. Giacomo CANTELLI (Vignola 1643 - 1695)
Rara. Uncommon map from "Mercurio Geografico", published in Rome by G. de Rossi. A rich cartouche enriches the map. The Italian cartographer Cantelli introduced a style in cartography that was followed and developed by Coronelli: his maps are very attractive and finely engraved, with elaborate strapworks and decorations.

The cartography of Ireland follows Petty's surveys and the map is fully engraved with political information. The scale of miles is further embellished with the royal coat of arms during the reign of William and Mary (1689-94) and several figures. This is the second state. This example appears to be state 1. Vincenzo Maria CORONELLI (Ravenna 1650 - Venezia 1718)
Elaborate map of the Newfoundland, Labrador, Nova Scotia and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The map is rich in historical and etymological notes, but also notes of costume. Coronelli derived his information from that of Nolin, who had published a similar map in Paris ten years earlier. Curious is the inscription at the bottom center, on the subject of the seabed so-called Grand Banks of Newfoundland: in this area, from 15 April to the end of July, we held a real contest of the cod fishery, including those depths were rich, in order to obtain the codfish. Much attention is also in place names, often provided in both English and French. Other peculiarity, rather unusual for a map, is indication of depth of the seabed. The fish surrounding the cartouche are an obvious allusion to the main industry of the region. Corone … [Click Below for Full Description]
