June 1, 1687. <div><br></div>Manuscript Document Signed: <i>"Hendrick Jacobs"</i>, and witnessed by William Bogardus and Paul Richard. Will dated June 1, 1687, New York, in Dutch, 4.5 pages recto and verso, 8.25" X 12.5" conjoined leaves. Generally very good condition with some tape repair to folds, remnants of wax seals and seal holes, age toning, edge wear and ink burn, which do not materially detract from this darkly penned document. <br><br>The will is assigning half his property to his son, Jacob, and naming his wife, Annetje, executrix. Witness William Bogardus was most likely the son of Anneke Jans, who with her first husband, Roeloff Jansen, obtained a grant of 62 acres of land on Manhattan island, extending from the present Warren Street to the neighborhood of Desbrosses Street, lying between Broadway and the Hudson River. When her first husband died, she married inherited the property and remarried Everardus Bogardus in 1638. When she died, she left her property to be divided among her eight surviving children. The 62 acres of land which Anneke inherited acquired the name ‘Domine’s Bouwerie”. Combined in English days with the "Company’s Bouwerie” and granted to Trinity Church in 1705 by the Colonial Governor, Lord Combury, as a representative of Queen Anne of England, this questionable conveyance of ownership of the original property of Anneke Jans became the basis for repeated and hotly contested lawsuits initiated by her descendants to claim their apparent legitimate part-ownership. As recently as the 1920’s, when the property was then considered … [Click Below for Full Description]

Grotius, Hugo
Amstelodami [Amsterdam]: Ex typographia P. & I. Blaeu ... apud Wolfgang, Waasberge, Boom, à Someren & Goethals Folio (37.5 cm, 14.76"). [4] ff., 977, [2] pp.. 1687 First complete edition of Grotius's correspondence, comprising 2,510 letters written by the Dutch philosopher between April 1599 and July 1645 to an international milieu of famous correspondents, including the Swedish statesman Axel Oxenstierna, the Dutch theologian Gerardus Joannes Vossius, and the German politician Ludwig Camerarius — not to mention Queen Cristina. According to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy (online), "Hugo Grotius (1583–1645) [Hugo, Huigh or Hugeianus de Groot] was a towering figure in philosophy, political theory, law and associated fields during the seventeenth century and for hundreds of years afterwards. His work ranged over a wide array of topics, though he is best known to philosophers today for his contributions to the natural law theories of normativity which emerged in the later medieval and early modern periods." The text is printed in Latin, double-column, with a handful of large woodcut initials, a few tail ornaments, and one letterpress diagram. The title-page, printed in red and black, features Blaeu's large device of an astrolabe flanked by Time and Hercules. An index on the final two pages lists Grotius's correspondents and the corresponding letters, which are arranged chronologically in the text. Contemporary northern-European style vellum over boards ruled in blind, panels with blind-stamped central cartouches, spine with seven raised bands and remnants of later p … [Click Below for Full Description]

Chardin, [Jean].
Lyon, Thomas Amaulry, 1687. 8vo. 2 vols. (24), 438 pp. 439, (9) pp. With engraved portrait frontispiece, additional engraved title, folding engraved map and 15 engraved plates (12 folding). Contemporary French full calf with giltstamped spines. Edges sprinkled in red. Second French edition of Chardin's account of his travels in Persia and India. Includes extracts from the Qur'an (sura 26) as well as Muslim religious chants extolling the greatness of the Prophet and the city of Mecca. The French traveller Jean Chardin (1643-1713) had spent the years 1665-70 and 1671-77 in the Middle East and is considered the most knowledgeable Westerner of his period with regard to Persian geography and customs (cf. Henze). "He apparently knew Esfahan better than Paris and visited nearly every part of the country. His account of the Persian court and his business transactions with the shah are of considerable interest" (Howgego). "The son of a jeweller, Chardin first went to the Levant in 1665 in order to purchase gems. He made a second journey there in 1671, spending much time in the company of the artist Guillaume Grelot, whom he met in Constantinople and whose drawings inspired the engravings in the present work. Chardin's acute observations and valuable insights into oriental life were highly praised by Montesquieu, Rousseau, Gibbon and Helvetius, all of whom drew on his work in their own writings" (Atabey 218). Persecuted as a Protestant, Chardin settled in London in 1681 and was appointed jeweller to the Royal Court. His journal, originally written in French, was first published in an … [Click Below for Full Description]

LUYKEN, Jan (1649-1712)
Amsterdam: 1687. 8vo (173 x 110 mm). [16], 224 [8] pp. Engraved additional title, 50 nearly full-page etched illustrations in the text. Washed & pressed with slight residual discoloration, but the etchings in clear impressions. Late 19th-century red morocco, sides gilt panelled, spine gold-tooled in compartments, turn-ins gilt, gilt edges, by Brany (a few small scratches and a stain to covers). Provenance: Robert Hoe, bookplate; Allan Heywood Bright, bookplate.***first edition, the Hoe copy, of a jolly devotional emblem book by the prolific Dutch poet-artist Jan Luyken, most of whose copious oeuvre is to be found within the covers of books. All 50 etchings of his "Sparks of the Love of Jesus" feature a winning and sometimes rather goofy female figure, representing each of us, or the soul. Each scene illustrates a Biblical passage, bears a Dutch title, and is followed by a poem introduced by a related Biblical quotation. Rather than emblems proper the illustrations are allegorical depictions of biblical scenes correlated with spiritual states of mind. Thus Miss Everywoman observes haplessly as a house is about to collapse on its owners, who have built it upon sand, while Death, a skeleton, leans stubbornly against one wall (Matthew 7.26); or she blows out a candle, fat-cheeked, at her solitary nighttime table (caption, "where there is life there is hope"); or walks barefoot in a field, cows grazing behind, staring down, her arms apart, suddenly noticing the flowers at her feet (Luke 12.27, "Consider the lilies how they grow, they toil not..."); or stands aghast before a feat … [Click Below for Full Description]

YOSHIDA, Hanbe
128 fine full-page woodcuts. Five vols. 8vo, orig. wrappers (rubbed, minor worming in Vol. III very carefully repaired), orig. block printed title label on each upper cover (rubbed), new stitching. Tokyo: 1687. First edition of this handsomely illustrated book; the woodcuts are by Hanbei Yoshida (active 1678-1705), one of the pioneers of the Ukiyo-e school. Hanbei was the leading illustrator in Kyoto and Osaka of his period and worked mostly, if not exclusively, as a book illustrator. He was the first Ukiyo-e illustrator of the region to sign his books. The present work is one of his most famous and successful publications. "With the growth of the chonin class and the aspirations of the new bourgeoisie to a fuller life style, the seventeenth century saw the production of encyclopaedias of behaviour and etiquette, and invariably such compendiums were replete with illustration, detailing correct usage from laying a table to tying a sash. Hambei was the illustrator of one such book, the Joyo Kimmo Zui, 'Illustrated Encyclopaedia for Women,' published in five volumes in 1687. In its comprehensive treatment of dress, hair-styles, household management and the like, it is typical of its class, and the majority of the woodcuts are of almost diagrammatic simplicity, but it is notable for a few full-length figures of women displaying kimono and these lift it from the general ruck of books of the period, the fine patterning within graceful silhouettes."-Hillier, The Art of the Japanese Book, I, pp. 108-09. The woodcuts of the kimono are most striking and attractive, showing how they a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Méré (Antoine Gombaud, Chevalier de )]
Paris: Guillaume Cavelier, 1687. FIRST EDITION, woodcut ornament on title, tear in lower outer corner of M2, pp. [xvi], 248, 12mo, contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments, minor wear, ownership inscription on title inked over, very good. Antoine Gombaud was not in fact a Chevalier, but adopted the title (Méré being where he was educated) for the protagonist in his dialogues who expressed his views. The maximes are worldly wise, for example [in translation]: Love is the weakness of the young, the vice of mature men, and the shame of old men; Woman is often an aid, and often an enemy, and marriage is sometimes a safe haven, sometimes a dreadful shipwreck. Confusingly, the author is sometimes given as Gombaud's exact contemporary George Brossin, (genuine) Chevalier de Méré (e.g. by Rochebiliere, but 'perhaps not' is the opinion of Brunet). There are 2 variants of the title-page: our copy is the variant with Cavelier in the title: the two variants are explained at the end of the Privilege, where Du Castin cedes half of the copyright to Cavelier. Scarce: COPAC records 3 copies, Birmingham, Oxford and Cambridge (all du Castin); WorldCat locates 2 copies in North America, Wisconsin (du Castin) and Newberry (Cavelier). KOSA PAN, OK-LUANG KANLAYA RATCHAMAITRI, & OK-KHUN SISAWAN WACHA ¿ SIAMESE AMBASSADORS TO FRANCE]
Paris: Sebastien Mabre-Cramoisy, 1687. Hardcover. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. 6 pp, [plus 1 integral blank]. Bound in old vellum, internally perfectly clean and fresh, a very good copy.Extremely rare first edition of this ephemeral pamphlet documenting the final royal audience of the Siamese embassy to France in 1686/7. The work is a formal request for permission to return to Siam - citing the King of Siam's impatience to hear of the results of the embassy as well as the prevailing winds and the season.Increasingly concerned at the Dutch predominance over Eastern trade, Phra Narai, King of Siam, succeeded in sending the first Siamsese embassy to France in 1684. The present account relates to the second such embassy (June 1686 - March 1687), whose purpose, as noted in the text here, was to secure an eternal alliance between France and Siam. For its part the newly-reorganized French Company of the Orient was delighted by these proposals, securing them valuable trade in spices and textiles. "The mission in Siam became the focus of France's activities in the East during the 1680's. Ayut'ia, King Narai's capital, became a "French Macao" for missionaries and merchants departing for and returning from the stations further to the East." (Lach & Van Kley, III: 252) The arrival of three Siamese ambassadors in northern France in the summer of 1686 caused a great deal of consternation in the popular sphere: illustrations of the embassy were frequently produced for eg almanacs of the time. The present work, printed by the Imprimerie Royale 'de l'exprés commande … [Click Below for Full Description]

Malpighi, Marcello
. Leiden, Peter van der Aa, 1687, 4°, Frontispiece and 87 partially numbered engraved copper plates, some folding or double, bound in later 18th Century half calf over marbled boards.. Complete Set of the Botanical Plates of the Opera Omnia ! - - Each plate is carefully mounted on a wide stubb, some margins of some plates trimmed to plate mark as usual, but an exceptionally clean set of these famous plates. - - Plates "to the first Part of Malpighi's Work belong 54 plates, which are numbered in the same manner and contain in each plate the same identical figures in the Leyden 4to Editionb published in 1687, as in the London folio edition published in 1686. As the size of the paper is however less, the figures necessarily crowed more together. - In the second Part of the London Edition, the Plates begin with number 1, and are continued to 39. - In this edition, there are only 34 plates - but the number of figures in each is the same; so that , as before, they are more crowded in the Leyden, than in the London edition. In both editions the figures are numbered exactly in the some order." - - Marcello Malpighi (1628.-1694) "was the founder of microscopic anatomy and a pioneer in the study of plant development. He approached the subject through the study of plant tissue."

Die bedeutendste kulturgeschichtliche Leistung Bontekoes war die Einführung des Kaffees, der Schokolade und des Tees in Berlin am Hofe des Großen Kurfürsten, wo er als kurfürstlicher Leibarzt wirkte.
