[SWEDEN – PHARMACOPOEIA].
[10], 237, [3] pp.First edition of a Swedish pharmacopeia. "There was no such compilation in Sweden in the 16th century, and the need for one was not felt until the 17th century, which saw the rise of the first apothecaries. ... A Pharmacopoea Holmiensis (i.e. Stockholm) was put together (1686). It was not widely distributed in the country, and the need for a more complete compilation led to court physician A. Bäck being commissioned to compose a new pharmacopoeia. He was assisted by Linnaeus, who primarily contributed to the section on the effects and uses of medicines. This document, (Materia medica), contained some 380 simple substances, the section on "Praeparata et Composita" some 400 chemical preparations - as well as a list of substances to induce vomiting (emeticorum), compounds containing mercury, opium, and an alphabetical index. The pharmacopoeia also described how plant drugs should be dried, pulverization, etc. Pharmacopoea Svecica appeared in 1775, that is, three years before Linnaeus passed away" (Meyerson, Linné on line). With the bookplate of Adolf and Louise von Krusenstierna and the embossed owner's stamp of O. Glass, Uppsala. Binding slightly rubbed, some wear at the head of the spine and some occasional browning and spots; generally in good condition.l Blake, p. 350; Wellcome IV, p. 371; cf. B. Willughby, Francis; John Ray
Oxford: Sheldonial Theatre, 1686. Ray, John (1627-1705); Francis Willughby (1635-1672). De historia piscium libri quatuor. Folio. [8], 343, [1], 30, [14]pp. Engraved frontispiece by Paul van Somer; 187 engraved plates. Oxford: Sheldonian Theatre, 1686 [engraved title dated 1685]. 378 x 238 mm. Modern quarter morocco, marbled boards., front hinge a bit worn. Title-leaf repaired in inner margin, uniform toning, a few small marginal tears in plates, but good to very good. Signature of Richard C. Rudolph (1909-2003) on title; embossed library stamp. First Edition, First Issue. Like the Ornithology, the History of Fishes was almost completely the work of Ray, who compiled it using his and Willughby's notes and the published writings of a number of authorities on fish, particularly Guillaume Rondelet and Ippolito Salviani. The work begins with an introductory essay on the definition of a fish: Ray rejected previous definitions that had indiscriminately encompassed all types of water-living animals but did include cetaceans with fishes despite their obvious affinities with viviparous quadrupeds. This essay is followed by others discussing the anatomy and physiology of fishes: Ray affirmed that fishes could hear, wrote extensively on the air-bladder, gave an account of the reproductive organs and denied that fish could reproduce through spontaneous generation. He rejected Rondelet's classification by locality in favor of Aristotle's system of Cetacei, Cartilaginei and Spinosi, which he then subdivided. The book was published by the Royal Society, many of whose members subscribed … [Click Below for Full Description]

SCHULTENS, Albert.
[30], 501, [84], [1 blank] pp.Second edition of Albert Schultens's renowned grammar of biblical Hebrew. Schultens (1686-1750), known as the father of comparative Semitic philology, taught Hebrew at Franeker and Leiden. He wrote extensively on the relationship between Hebrew and other Semitic languages, claiming that Arabic and Hebrew were "twin sisters". He used Arabic to interpret obscure Hebrew passages in the Bible. Schultens's extensive grammar was one of the most influential Hebrew grammars of the 18th century. Slightly browned and foxed, but otherwise in very good condition and only slightly trimmed (preserving an occasional deckle). The gold of the spine and edges was not well bonded and has been largely lost. The binding shows a few small worm holes, small cracks in the spine and other minor damage, but is still good. The rare second edition of an important work, also a remarkable example of Transylvanian book production.l STCN (1 copy); KVK & WorldCat (2 copies).

With an engraved title-page by Jan Luyken, showing the interior of an apothecary. Modern red cloth. [8], "210" [=208], [12] pp. Rare third edition of a Dutch translation of the Amsterdam Pharmacopoeia. Unlike the original Latin edition the Dutch translation not only lists ingredients, but also provides recipes to prepare the medicines. The numbers for quantities, as the publisher notes in the foreword, are spelled out to avoid any (fatal) problems arising from typesetting errors. The final page gives a list of medical titles printed and sold by the publisher. The original Latin Pharmacopoeia Amstelredamensis, the first Dutch pharmacopoeia, with recipes for nearly 200 medicines, was compiled anonymously by Nicolaes Tulp (1593-1674) by order of the city of Amsterdam, to serve as an official legal standard for the correct preparation of numerous medicines. Several cities in the southern Low Countries and Germany, and even London, had produced pharmacopoeias before any Dutch city and Tulp based his on those published in Augsburg, Cologne and London, primarily on the 1622 edition of the Pharmacopoea Augustana (providing about 85% of the content), with some material from the 1627 Dispensatorium Coloniense and the 1627 edition of the Pharmacopoea Londinensis. With the engraving and first three pages damaged and strengthened; a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Wien ( Vienna ):
Kupferstich ( Flugblatt ), dat. 1686, 30,5 x 39,8 Drugulin, 3227, Sammlung Eckl, IV, 1100.
