Ancor fresco e frusciante. Notevole l’importanza dell’opera e la rarità dell’edizione.

Justification foreword ('Den drucker tot den leser') with printer's signature in ink. - In this most widely known work of the period on the subject, Dr. Bontekoe recommends the drinking of tea from 8 to 10 cups a day, given that he himself consumed such quantities, and claims to drink 50 to 200 cups daily. The treatise is preceded by a two-page laudatory poem by 'V.O.'. Added are a chapter on the healthy effects of coffee and another on chocolate, and 'an apology from the author against his slanderers' (he may have been under the employment of the Dutch East India Company, then having the monopoly on the tea market, while making these recommendations).

Utrecht, Jean Ribbius, 1685. 4to (205 x 155mm). pp. (10), 215, (3), with woodcut title-vignette, 1 folded table and 13 (10 folded) engraved plates. Contemporary calf, gilt decorated spine with red gilt lettered label. Second French edition; the original Latin edition 'Historia Insectorum generalis' was published in 1669 in Utrecht. "Swammerdam's thesis about insects was fundamentally new and significant. For his contemporaries, as for Aristotle, there existed three good arguments, that not only placed the insects far from the higher animals, but even tended to remove them from the realm of subjects open to scientific study. These arguments were: insects lack internal anatomy; they originate by spontaneous generation; and they develop by metamorphosis. Swammerdam believed that all three arguments were false and devoted a wide variety of investigations to refute these ideas" (D.S.B. XIII, p. 171).

Bon exemplaire. Un coin cassé. Vicaire, 293. Oberlé, 733. Livres en bouche, 130. Bitting, 134. [Attributes: First Edition]

Franche Comté] Dole prise dans la premiere conqueste que le Roy a faite de la franche Comté en 1668 [Dôle, taken in the first conquest that the King made in Franche-Comté]

distribuë par l'Auteur, en l'Hostel des Manufactures des Gobelins, et en la rue St.Jacques, Paris 1685 - Painted from life by the artist who accompanied Louis XIV on his campaigns, Adam Frans Van der Meulen depicted in this wonderful panorama a post-battle view of Dôle, the capital of Franche-Comté, and the handsome surrounding region. In it, Louis XIV and his brother survey the city they've won from a hilltop. There is actually no unpleasant evidence of military activity except for some smoke billowing from the far side of Dôle. Adam Frans Van der Meulen was a landscape and genre painter, who specialized in battle scenes, and his early works, i.e. those from the years before he left for Paris (the earliest dated work is from 1653) are mainly cavalry skirmishes in the manner of his teacher Pieter Snayer. After he moved to Paris, the character of his work changed and became more ceremonial. He now specialized in large topographical views and military scenes and in royal journeys, processions and receptions. His most important task was to accompany the king on his many campaigns during the wars of conquest waged in the 1660s and 1670s against, inter alia the Spanish Netherlands, and as Peintre de conquêtes du roi officially to portray the memorable sieges, battles and conquests of le Roi Soleil in large-scale canvases or cartoons which were later transformed into tapestries. Van der Meulen was born in Brussels in 1632. In 1646 he was apprenticed to the battle painter Pieter Snayers. In 1651 he became a master in the Guild of St Luke in Brussels but by 1663 he had moved to Paris, where he joined a group of Netherlandish artists associated with the French painter Charles Le Brun (1619-90), who not only was Premier peintre du roi , but also (from 1663) director of the Parisian tapestry manufactory Manufacture royale des Gobelins . Van der Meulen quickly became a protégé of Le Brun, and on his recommendation Van der Meulen was appointed court painter to Louis XIV on 1 April 1664 and at the same time became Le Brun's collaborator in the tapestry manufactory. In 1673 he was accepted as a member of the Académie royale de Peinture et de Sculpture without any obligation to submit a morceau de réception ; in 1681 he became conseiller and in 1686 premier conseiller . He died as a highly esteemed artist in the Hôtel des Gobelins 15 October 1690. Copper engraving, on two joined sheets, by Van Huctenburg and A.F. Baudouinst, after Van der Meulen. Titled in French and Latin.

HISTOIRE DE LA CONQUESTE DE LA FLORIDE, PAR LES ESPAGNOLS, SOUS FERDINAND DE SOTO

Paris: Denys Thierry, 1685.. [24],300pp. 12mo. Contemporary speckled calf, spine gilt extra. Corners bumped and rubbed. Contemporary bookplate on front pastedown, later bookplates on rear pastedown. Internally clean. Near fine. The first available edition of this extremely important narrative, preceded by the 1557 original (of which only four copies are known), and two issues published by Richard Hakluyt in 1609 and 1611, in English. The identity of the Gentleman of Elvas has remained a mystery. His narrative is the primary source for information concerning the De Soto expedition of 1539- 43, the first investigation by Europeans of the southeast region of the United States. De Soto landed on the west coast of Florida in 1539, marching north through Georgia and west to Mobile Bay. His party reached the Mississippi River in 1541 and went perhaps as far as the present Oklahoma-Arkansas border. Returning east, De Soto died and was buried in the Mississippi. The survivors floated to the Gulf and made it to Mexico. SABIN 24864. SERVIES 218. PALAU 256843. CLARK I:8. JCB (2)II:1324.

The Paradoxal Discourses of F. M. Van Helmont, concerning the Macrocosm and Microcosm, or the Greater and Lesser World, and their Union. Set down in writing by J. B. and now Published.

      J. C. and Freeman Collins for Robert Kettlewel, London 1685 - Hardcover, 8vo. (xvi) +1 - 127 [128] 1 - 215 [216]pp. Errata on final leaf. Two plates between pages 18 & 19 and 22 & 23 of the second part. Contemporary blindstamped calf boards, recently rebacked with a leather title-label. Later endpapers. Francis Mercurius Van Helmont (1614 - 1699 CE), was a son of the renowned Flemish chemist, physiologist, and physician, Jean Baptiste Van Helmont (1577 - 1644), whose works he edited and published. He was well known in the European intellectual world of his time, and became the tutor and friend to Leibniz (who wrote his epitaph). He was also friendly with the Cambridge Platonists, notably Henry More and the remarkable Anne Conway, who he introduced to Kabbalism (in Platonised form) and Quakerism, and whose work he also published. Francis Mercurius was profoundly interested in the Kabbalah, and it is now generally acknowledged that he was extensively involved with Knorr von Rosenroth in the publication of the collection of Kabblisitic text that were translated into Latin as the Kabbala Denudata (1677-78), a work which became the main resource on the Kabbalah for Hermetic Kabbalists for centuries to come. The 'Paradoxal Discourses,' is essentially a series of philosophical / theological / medical / scientific essays. They clearly demonstrate a world-view in which everything is both a vital living object or entity in it's own right, as well as a part of an ever evolving greater whole, with the influence of Kabbalistic and neo-Platonic thought particularly evident in the Fourth Chapter of the Second Part of the work. Boards a little splayed, a little tightly bound in the recent leather spine, original boards have typical moderate age-wear, but are sound and presentable. Some old worm damage to the bottom margin of the title page and first sixteen leaves. It starts out slightly larger than two cigarette ends, and finishes in a pin-prick, and does not effect the text. There is some lengthy, early annotation (dated 1742) on the reverse of the title page and the reverse of the plate showing a foetus, as well as several lines on the verso of the plate depicting the ovaries (annotation dated 1740). A couple of other early marginal notes and inscriptions, including a lengthy one in the margins of the first page of the Preface. Some brown blotches and marks to the pages, but over all the text is clean and the pages supple. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

De insectis, In Methodum Redactus; cum notularum additione. Oper‰ M. Lister, Regi‰ Societate Londinensi. Item appendicis ad Historiam Animalium Angli¾.

London: Excudebat R.E. sumptibus S. Smith. 1685. - Goedart (1617-1668) was born in Middelburg, Netherlands. He had very little formal education, but his interest in art, particularly watercolor, led him to careful, scientific observations of local and regional insect populations. Although he was not a classifier and believed that certain larvae were the product of spontaneous generation, he eventually became a respected authority in entomology. This his only book, originally entitled Metamorphosis Naturalis, was first published in two parts between 1662 and 1667, with a third part appearing posthumously. In it the author details his various experiments with insects, noting their developmental histories from larvae to adult and skillfully diagrams their appearance at significant stages. Martin Lister (1639-1712) edited this edition for the Royal Society, and supplied the appendix on marine life. (See D.S.B.) Octavo. [7], [1, blank], 356, [4], 45 pp. With twenty-one fine engraved folding plates, displaying 150 examples of insects in various stages of their development and thirty-five examples of marine life. Separate title-page for the appendix. Modern quarter black morocco over marbled boards, gilt spine. Top corner of title-page restored, a couple of tears in folding plates neatly repaired. A bit of soiling in text. Otherwise a very good, clean copy. First edition with this title, with additions. Wing G-1002. B.M.N.H. II, 659. Nissen 1606. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
