Robert Brady
London : Tho Newcomb for Samuel Lowndes, 1684 A very good copy of the first and only edition of this rare and important work in new half calf binding. Robert Brady (1627-1700) was an academic and historical writer who rigorously researched original source material in an attempt to establish 'facts'. He was a Royalist and opposed to James Tyrell and William Petyt who took the Whig side. The book consists of three Tracts - each has its own title page - tracts 1 and 3 were previously published separately and this volume refers to them being 'very much inlarged' for this edition. The pagination is continuous through the Tracts. Also included is an Appendix 'containing several records, and a series of Great Councils and Parliaments before and after the Conquest, unto the end of the reign of Henry the third'; and a Glossary 'expounding many words used frequently in our antient records, laws and historians'. Some sections of the Appendix are in Latin. This copy has one of the 2 cancels noted by Cole and Contreras in their copy: it has 2 different versions of the Nn3 section. It does not have Qq4 in either version. The binding has raised bands and title label to the spine and marbled boards. New endpapers and initial and final blanks have been added. Page edges are reddened. Contents: title; epistle 6pp; title tract I 1683; advert 1p; intro 1p; text pp 1-162; title 1684; text 165-240 with numbers to pp 233-240 bracketed; title tract 2 1684; text pp235 - 326 with p 301/2 in 2 versions; title tract 3 1684; text pp 339 - 412; appendix pp 1-60; glossary pp 1-68; index (unpaginated) 15 … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

BOYLE, Robert.
FIRST EDITION. "To a modern physiologist the Porosity of Bodies is of signal interest, for it marks the beginning of the study of osmotic pressure and of the exchange of substances through living membranes, which is at the basis of the regulation of all bodily processes. He [Boyle] commences by considering the skin and sweating, confirming Santorio's celebrated observations on loss of weight through insensible perspiration... There are interesting observations upon the absorption of medicines through the skin and through wounds [concluding that substances can be absorbed through the lungs and the human skin]. The second part of the essay deals with the porosity of solid bodies, and once more we find Boyle speaking in terms of atomic structure and arrangement... At the end there is an interesting section on the porosity of glass, in which the methods of staining glass are described at length" (Fulton).Wing B3966. Fulton 149.

SPARROW, Anthony
1684. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. A rare Anglican treatise by Anthony Sparrow, a 17th-century English priest. He was persecuted for owning and using the outlawed 'Book of Common Prayer', and was not reinstated as a priest until the Restoration of the church. This work, "A Rationale on the Book of Common Prayer," was Sparrow's caution and warning to his diocese against false doctrine. He spoke on communion, the acts of the saints, important feast days and holy days, and on liturgical texts and prayers. [Attributes: First Edition]

BONANNI Filippo
Ottimo esemplare. Piena pergamena settecentesca. Ex libri al contropiatto. Edizione originale latina pubblicata dopo quella in italiano. LAT

Rome: Ex Typographia Varesij, 1684. BONANNI, Filippo (1638-1725). Recreatio mentis et oculi in observatione animalium testaceorum. Rome: Ex Typographia Varesij, 1684. 4to., (8 6/8 x 6 1/8 inches). Additional engraved allegorical title-page, 3 sectional title-pages, and 132 engraved plates illustrated 532 specimens (the top margins of N2, N3 and O3 restored at an early date). Contemporary limp vellum with yapp fore-edges, the author and title in manuscript on the spine, remains of two pairs of leather ties (a little bit rumpled, and one or two stains). Provenance: with the 19th-century inscription of the Societas Mariae Vicente Codina Vidal, of Xativa in Spain on a blank between the engraved title-page and the letterpress title-page First Latin edition, first published in Rome in 1681 as Ricreatione dell' occhio e della mente nell' osservation' delle chiocciole, and an attractive example of the FIRST MONOGRAPH ON SHELLS, enlarged by the addition of a further one hundred shells. Bonanni was a Jesuit and student of the celebrated Athanasius Kircher, and upon his death succeeded him as curator of the cabinet of curiosities at the Collegio Romano, publishing the catalogue of their collections as the Musaeum Kircherianum, Rome, 1709. The Collegio Romano clearly provided the specimens for many of the engraved figures in this astonishing work, which caused Buonanni to be considered, along with Lister and Rumpf, one of the founding fathers of conchology. Nieremberg, Juan Eusebio (Text by); Gaspar Bouttats (Engravings by)
Amberes (Antwerp): Geronymo Verdussen, 1684. New edition, revised. Hardcover. f to vg. Small octavo (7 1/2 x 4 3/4"). [18], 655, [77]pp. Contemporary full vellum, with later title label to spine. Additional engraved title by Gaspar Bouttats. Originally published in 1640, "De la diferencia entre lo temporal, y eterno" is one of the author's most ascetic and most successful works, with a total of 60 editions in various translations. The book, written in admirable prose, inspired Jacindo Verdaguer for his "L'Atlàntida."In this book, Father Juan Eusebio Nieremberg (1595-1658), a Jesuit priest, theologian and mystic, states that Man was created by God to praise Him, make Him reverence and serve Him, and thereby save his soul; and the other things on the face of the earth are created for man, and to help him in the pursuit of the purpose for which he was created. Hence it follows that man must use things as much as they help him to his purpose, and so much he must remove them as they prevent him from doing it. Therefore, this "difference" between the temporal and the eternal is related to the purpose of man's life.Nieremberg intends in this work that the reader internalizes this "difference" in a vital and existential way, deepening the thought of eternal life, whether in heaven or in hell. The "things on the face of the earth", the temporal, are means that must be "used" to reach the purpose, or happy eternity with God, the Creator. This work is splendidly illustrated throughout with 10 full-page engravings (including frontispiece), by Gaspar Bouttats (c. 1640-1695 or … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

More, Thomas
Very good (please see full item description for details). More, Thomas. Utopia, Written in Latin by Sir Thomas More, Chancellor of England; Translated into English. London: Richard Chiswell, 1684. First edition of this translation, by Gilbert Burnet (1643-1714; Scottish philosopher, historian, and Bishop of Salisbury). 8vo, [22], 206, with original rear blank (P4); front blank (A1) appears to have been replaced. Early (possibly original) boards, rebacked with recent new leather spine with red label, new endpapers. Mild browning to edges of title page, which bears and early ownership signature (Henry Thomson), else very clean. Burnet's translation is generally regarded as preferable to the first English translation, done by Ralph Robinson in 1551. Pforzheimer (742) notes that this translation "is in some respects much superior and certainly represents a more readable text except to those who enjoy the Tudor vigor of Robinson's version." ESTC R7176; Wing M2961; Sabin 50546. First published in Latin in 1516, More's highly influential work is a socio-political commentary presented through an account of the government and customs of a fictional island called Utopia (literally meaning no place). As explained in Printing and the Mind of Man (47) "Utopia is not, as often imagined, More's ideal state; it exemplifies only the virtues of wisdom, fortitude, temperance, and justice. It reflects the moral poverty of the states which More knew, whose Christian rulers should possess also the Christian virtues of Faith, Hope, and Charity." Kulturgeschichte. - Theologie. - Barclay, Robert.
1684. Erste deutsche Auflage. 21,5 x 18,5 cm. XVI Blatt, 450 Seiten, 12 Blatt. Blindgeprägter Ganzledereinband der Zeit. Bestoßen und berieben, unteres und oberes Kapitel leicht beschädigt. Innengelenk leicht gelockert, insgesamt von sehr guter Erhaltung. Kleiner Stempel auf Vortitel. Robert Barclay (* 23. Dezember 1648 in Gordonstown, Morayshire; † 3.
