DSB II, 419. Poggendorff I, 274.

Historia insectorum generalis, in qua verissimae mutationum, seu lentae in membra epigeneseos rationes, duce Experientia, redduntur, recepta vulgo Insectorum Metamorphosis solide refutatur. Adjicitur dilucidatio . Editio Nova.Leiden, Johannes van Abkoude, 1733. 4to. With 13 engraved plates, of which 8 folding, and 1 folding table. Early 19th-century brown half sheepskin, old fly leaves preserved.

      - BMC NH, p. 2055; Hagen II, p. 209; Horn & Schenkling 21795; Nissen, ZBI 4053; STCN (6 copies); for the author: DSB XIII, pp. 168-175. Reissue of the rare Latin translation first published in Utrecht, by Meinardus van Dreunen in 1684, of Swammerdam's famous work on the metamorphosis of insects. Since Aristotle, the theory on insects was based on three suppositions, insects lack internal anatomy, they originate by spontaneous generation and they develop by metamorphosis. The idea of metamorphosis was that a sudden and total change from one kind of creature into another, comparable to the alchemical transmutation of a base metal into gold. Swammerdam's thesis was fundamentally new and significant. He believed all three suppositions to be false and devoted a wide variety of investigations to refute these ideas. With a small tear, the first few pages heavily browned and foxed, one small tear and some occasional slight damp stains and foxing, but with the plates in very good condition. Binding re-backed and slightly rubbed near the edges. Good copy.

[AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] first edition. Binding in full speckled brown sheepskin contemporary. Back with nerves decorated. brown calf as an exhibit. 3 corners bumped. friction.         Neurographia universalis.

Lyon: Apud Joannem Certe, in vico Mercatorio sub signo Trinitatis, 1684. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. Folio (341 x 220 mm). [16 ], 252, [2] pp. Signatures: ã4 ?4 A-2H4 2I2 a1, 135 leaves, errata on last 2 pages. Title printed in red and black with an engraved device signed 'MB'; woodcut headpieces and initials. 8 engravings printed in the text (Tabs IX, X, XIV-XVII, XXII, XXX). 22 engraved plates (tabs iv and v supplied from a one mm shorter copy), engraved arms of the dedicatee, Pierre de Roussy, archbishop of Narbonne, engraved portrait of the author signed 'Math: Boulanger Fe.' and 22 anatomical plates, 16 folding, several made up of 2 or more sheets pasted together, numbered continuously with the engravings printed in the text. There are 30 anatomical illustrations in all, numbered I-XXX, signed 'Beaudeau sculpsit Monsp.' except XX and XXX unsigned. A few leaves lightly browned, folding plate XXIII with closed tear. A fine, fresh, clean, and large copy. 18th-century English panelled calf. Neat repairs to joints and head and tail caps; corners worn. Provenance: Thomas Symonds of Pengethley with his signature, purchase price 30 s, engraved bookplate, manuscript notes and inserted index*; library of Walter Pagel. ----Wellcome V, p.350 (1685 title); Krivatsy 12403 (1685 title); Garison-M. 1379; Norman 2153 ; LeFanu, Notable Medical Books in the Lilly Library p.95 ; En français dans le texte 120. FIRST EDITION. An 'editio novissima' was printed by Certe in 1716 . The best description and illustrations of the nervous system made in the 17th century. Based on 500 dissections, all the illustrations are life size. "It was illustrated with thirty particularly fine engravings by Jean Beaudeau, most of them on foldout pages larger than the pages of the book. It also contained a splendid portrait of the author by Boulanger. Vieussens was an untiring dissector, and his work revealed the structure and arrangement of the nervous system better than any predecessor in addition to recording new and correct observations. For example, he showed that the spinal cord was an independent structure, not merely an appendage of the brain, and he first defined the contrum ovale." (LeFanu). "Vieussens, professor at Montpellier, was the first to describe the centrum ovale correctly. The publication of the above work threw new light on the subject of the configuration and structure of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves." (Garrison-Morton). "The two largest plates (Tabs XXVIII and XXIX) are each made up of 6 sheets pasted together. In order to show both the left and right sides of the body, the left hand side of the plate is made up from the direct impressions of three engravings, the right hand side from counter-proofs of the same plates. The majority of the plates are signed 'Beaudeau sculpsit Monsp.' The engraver was thus presumably working directly in Montpellier under Vieussens' direction. The portrait and 'JC' monogram device on the title are probably both by Mathieu Boulanger, who signed the portrait. Bénézit lists an engraver of this name active in Paris in the 17th century but gives no other details. In some copies the date on the title-page is 1685; both titles have the words 'editio nova', in this case meaning a new and original publication, rather than a new edition. When Jean Certe produced another edition in 1716, the year after Vieussen's death, he called it 'editio novissima'. *The former owner of this copy, Thomas Symonds of Pengethley Manor, Herefordshire paid 30s for it, but then noted that it was listed in Thomas Osborne's Catalogue, 1752, at 9s. He has written a note on the book, comparing it with other works on neurology, on the pastedown (22 lines) and his 8-page MS index is tipped in. The errata are corrected, as well as pencil annotations in the margins which may also be in Symonds' hand." (R. Gaskell, Books from the Library of Walter Pagel, Pt. II, 182). Very Good....

        The Observator in Dialogue.

London: Printed by J. Bennet for William Abington, 1684-87. FIRST COLLECTED EDITION. Three volumes bound as two. Folio, unpaginated. Volume I, pp.[16]; followed by 470 sheets (including two extra sheets from larger issues), with nos. 471-73 bound into volume II. Volume II, pp.[12]; [6]; followed by sheets numbered 4 to 215. Volume III, pp.40; [4]; followed by 246 sheets. This adds up to all 931 sheets published. All three volumes have an arbitrarily arranged index preceding the main text, while volumes I and III also contain a preface, and volume III contains a potted history of the period. With a frontispiece copper engraving of the author by R. White, after a portrait by Godfrey Kneller. Also with an extract from Macaulay's 'History of England' neatly copied in black ink to front free endpaper of volume I. Recently re-backed, using original boards and title labels. In full brown calf with raised bands, gilt titles to original red labels on spines, and blind decoration to boards.Blind stamps of the American Congregational Association to title page of each volume. Bookplate of Silas Ketchum Hopkinton, as well as another bookplate bearing a coronet and the letter C, to front pastedown of each volume. Light browning throughout, most leaves brittle. One large tear to sheet 209 in volume I, gently repaired. One small worm hole towards the top of the sheets of volume I, from sheet 295 to end. Text unaffected. One large tear to sheet 4 of volume II, vertical near the binding. On sheet 78 of volume II the phrase 'Monarchy is anarchy ' has been corrected by hand to read 'Liberty is anarchy'. Original boards heavily worn; pleasingly restored with a new spine to a usable condition. Good overall.Addressed to 'the IGNORANT, the SEDITIOUS, or the SCHISMATICAL Reader...', the Observator was an irregular, broadly bi-weekly, pamphlet printed on both sides of a single sheet of paper in two columns. L'Estrange's forceful propaganda takes the form of a dialogue between a Tory and a Whig (Observator and Trimmer), the former lambasting the latter's ill-conceived opinions, delivered with a strongly anti-Catholic sentiment, but equally critical of Titus Oats' Popish Plot - seemingly everyone except the King himself presenting themselves as a potential target. Though he was an uncompromising Royalist throughout the Civil War, being imprisoned for espionage in 1644, L'Estrange was also an ardent Protestant, eventually receiving a pardon and returning to England, where he was immediately useful in censoring John Milton. Following the Restoration L'Estrange became a sort of Inquisitor-in-Chief, overseeing the output of the nation's presses with terrifying efficiency and severity throughout the 1660s and '70s. Having produced Observator from the political wilderness during the 1680s, L'Estrange's career was ended permanently by the Glorious Revolution of 1688, and he retired to more scholarly pursuits for the remainder of his long life.

[xvii]+548+[16] pages. Quarto (11 1/4" x 8 1/4") bound in old velum with original string ties still in place. From the library of George M Foster. 1st edition.Antonio de Solís y Ribadeneyra (1610 - April 19, 1686), Spanish dramatist and historian, was born at Alcalá de Henares (less probably, Plasencia). He studied law at Salamanca, where he produced a comedy entitled Amor y obligación, which was acted in 1627. He became secretary to the count of Oropesa, and in 1654 he was appointed secretary of state as well as private secretary to Philip IV. Later he obtained the lucrative post of chronicler of the Indies, and, on taking orders in 1671 severed his connexion with the stage. He died at Madrid on the 19th of April 1686. Of his ten extant plays, two have some place in the history of the drama. El Antor al use was adapted by Scarron and again by Thomas Corneille as L'Amour de la mode, while La Gitanilla de Madrid, itself founded on the novela of Cervantes, has been utilized directly or indirectly by PA Wolff, Victor Hugo and Longfellow. The titles of the remaining seven are Triunfos de amor y fortuna, Eurídice y Orfeo, El Alcetzar del secrete, Las Amazonas, El doctor Carlino, Un bobo hace ciento, and Amparar el enemigo. Amor y obligación survives in a manuscript at the Biblioteca Nacional. The Historia de la conquista de México, población y progresos de la América septentrional, conocida por el nombre de Nueva España, covering the three years between the appointment of Cortés to command the invading force and the fall of the city, deservedly ranks as a Spanish prose classic. It was published in 1684; an English translation by Townshend appeared in 1724.George McClelland Foster, Jr born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on October 9, 1913, died on May 18, 2006, at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979, when he became professor emeritus. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications, his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics, including acculturation, long-term fieldwork, peasant economies, pottery making, public health, social structure, symbolic systems, technological change, theories of illness and wellness, humoral medicine in Latin America, and worldview. The quantity, quality, and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. Virtually all of his major publications have been reprinted and/or translated. Provenance from the executor of Foster's library laid in.Condition:Lacks Foster stamp and acquiry date, soiled, extremity wear, repair to title verso, page 77 with marginal tear else a very good.

Lisbon, En la Emprenta de Miguel Manescal, Librero de la Serenissima Casa de Bargança [sic], y de S. Ilustrissima, 1684. - 4°, disbound, text block edges sprinkled red. Woodcut on title page repeated on p. 31 of a bowl with flowers, fruits and vegetables. Large, elegant woodcut initial on p. 3. Extensive side notes, consisting of Latin versions of quotations in the text. In good to very good condition. 31 pp. *** One of several editions that appeared in 1683 (?)-1684; in addition to this one, we know of an undated edition without imprint (25 pp.) as well as Madrid, 1684 and Valencia, 1684 editions. The Bishop of Malaga exhorts his flock to celebrate the victory of Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I over the Turks on September 12, 1683, at the Battle of Vienna. Vienna had been besieged by the Ottoman Empire for more than 2 months. This victory, won by the Empire in league with Poland, is often seen as the turning point after which the Turks ceased to be a menace to the Christian world. Fray Alonso gives some details on the battle, and discusses the alliances that made the victory possible.Fray Alonso Enríquez de Guzmán y de Orozco (Málaga, 1631-Málaga, 1692) was officially the son of a Spanish nobleman, but was in fact the son of Philip IV, who had been having an affair with Alonso's mother, one of the queen's women in waiting. In 1646, when Philip's heir Baltasar Carlos died, Philip attempted to legitimize Alonso. Alonso refused and took orders as a Dominican in 1648, adopting the name Fray Alonso de Santo Thomás. Respected as a theologian, philosopher, and orator, he was named bishop of Osma in 1663, then of Plasencia, and in 1664, of Málaga. He is remembered for helping the city of Orán when it suffered an attack of the plague and for his help in Málaga after the earthquake of 1680. As a patron of the arts, he befriended the sculptor Pedro de Mena and the painter, architect, and sculptor Alonso Cano. *** Arouca S265. Sousa Viterbo, Litteratura hespanhola em Portugal p. 231.         Utopia.

London: for Richard Chiswell,, 1684. Octavo. Contemporary sprinkled sheep, unlettered. First edition of Gilbert Burnet's translation of More's Utopia. Utopia tells of the best order of society, the ideal commonwealth, which is to be found on the island of Utopia. Its protagonist is the Portuguese traveller Raphael Hythlodaye, who relates that he accompanied Amerigo Vespucci on three of his four journeys to the New World, including one on which he remained behind in order to explore further. Hythlodaye (whose name means "one who is cunning in nonsense") then relates his experiences of the distant island (Utopia means "nowhere land"; More and Erasmus also referred to it merely as Nusquam, or "nowhere"), where all property is held in common ownership, where six hours a day are devoted to work and the rest to recreation, where gold and silver are used not as currency but as the material for making shackles and chamber pots, and slaves (criminals and prisoners of war) are treated fairly. The island bears a remarkable resemblance to England, providing a source of satire on contemporary life and government.

Meditations and Discourses on the Glory of Christ, in his Person, Office, and Grace: with The Differences between Faith and Sight. Applied unto the Use of them that Believe.

Printed by A.M. and R.R. for Benjamin Alsop 1684 - FIRST EDITION, with a fine engraved portrait frontispiece, slightly offset onto title, pp. [xxxii], 247, contemporary semi-sombre black morocco, panelled in gilt, spine gilt in compartments, lettered in gilt, gilt edges, minor wear to extremities, Sir John Hartopp's copy with his signature on a fly-leaf, some corrections in text (either by Hartopp, or conceivable Owen),19th-century armorial bookplate of John Poynder. A fine association copy of a scarce book. 'In September 1673 the churchwardens of Stoke Newington presented Hartopp and Charles Fleetwood "for not coming to their said parish church nor receiving the sacrament at Easter last past nor since to this day". Hartopp worshipped at the Leadenhall Street congregation of the Independent minister Dr John Owen; after the death of Joseph Caryl in 1672, his followers and those of Owen joined forces to form 'one of the most aristocratic of the London Nonconformist congregations', meeting at Bury Street in the parish of St Mary Axe (Whiting, 78). Hartopp made shorthand notes of Owen's sermons and as a result thirteen were published for the first time in 1756' (ODNB). John Poynder was a lawyer and evangelical activist. 'The extent of Poynder's eclectic literary tastes was revealed in January 1850 when Sothebys took three days to sell his remarkable library. The collection included first editions of Shakespeare and many volumes with autograph letters and memoranda, including an edition of the Phaenomena et diosemeia of Aratus Solensis, autographed and annotated by Milton' (op. cit.). Poynder has written a note about the provenance. (ESTC R32196)
