Editions were also produced in the American colonies at Boston and Providence between 1721 and 1774." [online site of the British Library]. London: J. Kidgell, 1682. Second Edition. Leatherbound. Very good. [6], 319 [313] p. 20 cm. Full leather. Repairs to spine with new label. Hinges repaired internally, corners worn. Bookplate and ink notations on front endpapers. Ink inscription across from title page. Ink numbers and occasional words in margins. John Sadler (1615–1674) was a well-known London lawyer and constitutional theorist, and a good friend of Oliver Cromwell, at one time serving as his personal secretary. During the 1650s Sadler held several offices, being secretary to the Council of State and a member of the Committee for the Advancement of Learning and the Committee for Lunatics. A first edition of this book was printed by Richard Bishop in 1649 as noted in the inscription across from the title page. This book is a founding document of British Israelitism, the idea that the people of Britain are the descendants of the Ten Lost Tribes of ancient Israel. More importantly, however, Rights of the Kingdom is a defense of the execution of King Charles I.

LE CLERC, Sébastien
Engraved frontis., an engraved head-piece at beginning of the dedication, & 82 full-page engravings in the text. 4 p.l. (incl. frontis.), 188, [8] pp. 12mo, late 18th-cent. light brown morocco, sides with gilt fillets & concentric circles, flat spine gilt, a.e.g., signed at foot of spine "Rel. P. Bozerian." Paris: J. Jombert, 1682. Second edition, bound by Bozerian, of this popular manual for artists and architects. This is "one of the most attractive little mathematical works ever published."-Hofer, Baroque Book Illustration, pp. 14 & 32. The illustrations in this book show beautiful small landscapes in the lower portion of the image, while the upper portion shows geometrical diagrams; many are animated by figures (peasants, soldiers, noblemen in contemporary costume). Leclerc's style of illustration strongly influenced the 18th-century French vignettists, prefiguring the grace and elegance of the best French rococo. Le Clerc (1637-1714), a native of Lorraine, adapted the technique of his countryman Jacques Callot. Professor of geometry and perspective at the Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences, Le Clerc also worked for Louis XIV as "graveur du Roi." Fine copy. Tiny chip to head of upper joint.

Engraved vignette on title, 30 engraved plates (some browned), & numerous woodcut illus. in the text. Title printed in red & black. 2 p.l., 48, 99, [9], 54 pp., one blank leaf, 16 pp. Small 4to, fine antique mottled calf (some browning as is usual with this book), spine richly gilt. Frankfurt: J. Zubrodt, 1682. First edition of the first illustrated book on Chinese medicine published in the West, and the second European book on Chinese medicine, preceded only by an anonymous 12mo tract (1671) which contained only the briefest summary of Chinese medical principles with no illustrations. Cleyer's work was the first European book on Chinese medicine to attract significant attention, and the first book to acquaint Europeans with Chinese medical charts. Cleyer's text included a thorough discussion of Chinese theories of the pulse in health, together with theories of acupuncture. The book also contains the first acupuncture charts published in the West. "The book has four main sections: 1. four books by Wang Chu-Ho on the pulse (approximately 200 B.C.); 2. a treatise on the aspects of the tongue in different diseases; 3. an exposition of different drugs prepared by the missionaries, as directed by Chinese authors; and 4. a richly illustrated collection of woodcuts depicting the Chinese doctrine of the pulse and the diagnostic mapping of the tongue, as well as 30 copperplates of Chinese anatomical charts."-Sim, The Heritage of Anesthesia, p. 296. The Philologia Sacra being the center of his work, he was also in his time one of the most distinguished experts on Hebrew. These works, his classical work, and his schoolbooks are now forgotten. He lives however on in the history of German linguistics, through a small booklet: 'Observationum in linguam vernaculam specimen' (Coloniae Brandenburg, 1669). Vorstius was inspired by the Roman linguist Varro, and as a sample of his intensive study of his mother tongue and its history, he offers in 19 chapters as many etymological monographies. Not one of his etymological studies is completely wrong, most of them actually are proofs of his admirable linguistic insight. [Click Below for Full Description]

Thevenot, Melchisedec [First Map of the Mississippi River].
The first separate map of the Mississippi River, in its very first publication. 1682. Paris. Louis Jolliet. 393 x 165 mm. Trimmed a little close at the bottom edge, with latitude numbers just touching the edge of the paper in a few places. 35,000 $ The First Map of the Mississippi River, based upon the cartographic renderings of Jolliet and Marquette, published in Thevenot’s Recueil de Voyages in 1682. It became the earliest separate map to depict the expedition of Louis Jolliet and Father Jacques Marquette down the Mississippi River. In 1663, the French government began a more systematized effort to search for furs, minerals, and a shorter route to China. The initial objective was locating the Mississippi River, whose existence was known through Indian reports. An expedition was sent out under the command of Louis Jolliet, a fur trader and explorer, and the Jesuit Father Jacques Marquette. Jolliet and Marquette left Green Bay in May 1673, and by following the courses of the Fox and Wisconsin rivers, reached the upper Mississippi River. Continuing south, they discovered the mouths of the Missouri, Ohio, and Arkansas rivers, before turning back out of fear of encountering a Spanish force. On the return trip, they found a short cut to Lake Michigan by following the Illinois and Des Plaines rivers to a portage at Chicago. Several manuscript maps survive based on the discoveries of the Jolliet and Marquette expedition. This map was first adapted for inclusion in Melchisedech Thevenot’s Recueil des Voyages, Paris, 1681. It shows for the first time on a printed map the Mississipp … [Click Below for Full Description]
