Below this are 20 lines (and 6 on the verso) of inked notes about Butler in the hand of Ashley Cowper [minor poet, 1701-1788; the poet's uncle & the father of Theadora]. PORZIO, Luca Antonio (1639-1723)

LES DERNIERS EFFORTS DE L'INNOCENCE AFFLIGÉE - Volume I and II (bound together in this single book), par (PIERRE JURIEU). A LA HAYE : CHEZ ABRAHAM ARONDEUS, Marchand Libraire au Palais, a l'Enseigne du Roy de France, M. DC. LXXXII (1682). This book almost immediately became an important and controversial work that was quickly reprinted, most notably by Chez David Dufour, Ville Franche, who republished the book in several editions also in the year 1682. VELLUM BOUND, small format 3" x 5.25", two parts in this one book (complete), pagination: [4], 182; [2],160 pages. I collated both Volume I and Volume II page-by-page with the copy of each volume held in the Rare Book Holdings of the Bavarian State Library, Germany. Those rare copies were digitized in 2010. Condition: The vellum covers are yellowed with age, stained, worn through along some of the edges, are peeling at the folds and edges, and have a 1/2 piece missing at the bottom of the spine; the inner rear hinge has completely split, exposing the inner binding and meaning that the vellum covers are almost disbound (a strong tug would remove them from the inner bound text. There is interesting very early writing, in French, on the front pastedown, the rear free endpaper, and on a laid-in slip of paper; there is also a signature on the very last page of text of Volume II. There is a handwritten date of 1712 on the front pastedown, but I don't know if all the writing is from that time or not. The front and rear pastedowns are soiled, creased, and have large tears. The first page of Volume I is soiled, has a dime-size edge ch … [Click Below for Full Description]

GLANVILL, Joseph; MORE, Henry; Dr. Rust Bishop of Ireland
James Collins and Sam. Lowndes. 1682 Glanvill & More Anglican Philosophy Eastern Sages Robert Boyle Ireland A rare, late 17th-century printing of two famed English philosophical essays by Joseph Glanvill and Dr. Henry More. These two English philosophers were known to have influenced each other on a variety of philosophical issues. Their works were often found published together as is the case with this 1682 printing of ‘Two Choice and Useful Treatises’. Glanvill’s ‘Lux Orientalis’ was his philosophical stance on the fundamental theories of the Anglican Church. It was written as a defense of More’s doctrine of ‘Preexistence of Souls’ (DNB XXI), and was notable for being included in a letter to Robert Boyle! Dr. Henry More found himself in a number of controversial arguments with Robert Boyle mostly because he was interested in new forms of philosophical science and unfocused on the scientific evidences found by Boyle. HANCOCK, Rob[ert]
Printed by S. Roycroft, for Thomas Flesher, London, 1682. [16], 191pp, [1]. Contemporary calf, recently rebacked, with contrasting red morocco lettering-piece, gilt. Rubbed, with slight loss at head and foot of spine, corners, cracking/marking to surfaces of boards. Manuscript initials (C.J.?) to head of title, else internally clean and crisp A rare anti-Catholic work issued in the wake of the Popish Plot, by Robert Hancock (c.1641-1683), Rector of Northell, Bedfordshire, fellow of Clare Hall, Cambridge (BA 1662/3, MA 1665), of whom little else is known. The text, richly adorned with side-notes, is a learned examination of the historical background of Catholic and Protestant relations, and theologies, within the British Isles. Certain in outlook, Hancock's criticism of Milton, amongst others, builds upon contemporaries such as Titus Oates. Outside of the UK, ESTC locates only two copies (Union Theological and Victorian Parliamentary libraries). ESTC R25407, Wing H643. Size: 8vo [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Fürer von Haimendorf, Christoph v.).
Nürnberg, Andreas Knorz für Georg Scheurer, 1682. Erste Ausgabe. – Exlibris – VD17 23:281536K; Goed. III 275, 1; Kroker 1, 206; Faber du Faur 584. OLDHAM, John
1682. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "While some no other cause for life can give, but a dull habitude to live." - John Oldham, Memory of Norwent John Oldham was a 17th-century English satirist and poet whose poems reflect the Satires of Juvenal. While in Surrey in 1679, Oldham composed his satirical poems against the Jesuits, a collection of short verses that were condescending and trite, written during a time when anger was readily stirred up against the Catholics for the 'Popish Plot'. According to Allibone, "These satires form a very curious work, and contain an immense number of stories and allusions to the Golden League. Oldham, far superior [to other poets], ranks perhaps next to Dryden: he is spirited and pointed" This book, published by Hindmarsh in London, includes four works by Oldham, each with separate titles. These works were printed and published as one (in 1684), rather than separately published then rebound. [Attributes: First Edition]
