THEVENOT, Jean de
1682 Thevenot VOYAGES Persia Egypt Constantinople Illustrated Sultan Asia Arabia Jean de Thevenot was a 17th-century French voyager whose expeditions to the Middle East were extensively recorded in his travel journals. Beginning in 1655, Thevenot traveled throughout the Greek Isles, Egypt, Syria, Mesopotamia, and Persia spending large amounts of time in Palestine, Constantinople, and Egypt. His second voyage, which began in 1663, took him through the Holy Land and Mesopotamia, Persia, as well as through parts of modern day Iran and Iraq. This 1682 Dutch edition of Thevenot’s second voyage is beautifully illustrated with impressive full-page hand-colored engravings of views of Middle Eastern city scenes, architecture, and festivals. It is worth nothing though, that early French editions of this work included particular Americana interest, with the first printed account of Marquette and Joliet expeditions. (Sabin 95332). These early Thevenot editions are known to have price comparisons as high as $70,000. Josse, 1737, 12mo (cm. 16,5), 22 cc.nn., 469(1) pp., 7 cc.nn.

Hierocles translated by Norris
UK or US: unknown ancient 1682. Excellent Condition - slightly slightly scuffed spine - ancient edition - Interesting for philosophers and the study of NeoPlatonism, philosophy, virtue, Pythagoras & Hierocles. Stimulated by the book Hierocles on the Golden Verses of the Pythagoreans & an inquiry & contemplation of exactly what is Virtue so often mentioned by GW & AC & others.Virtue etymologically derives from the Latin vir which simply means man. Such is presumably inclusive of woman as well to the extent of sharing the notion of human. I have scanned the interesting pieces of the book. Note the printing uses what looks like an f but is really an s . Note also that is the so called John Norris translation. The binding is very, very good. There is some fraying on the outside spine. Instead of gilding the edges are yellow stained. On the inside of the board paper at the bottom in unphotographable light very small print are the words bound by john winstanley manchester - nothing else on that page. This may put the binding date somewhere in the early 1800's . There is a Dawson Bookshop sticker on the back inside cover which is probably where my father acquired it. There are a couple of dealer pencil markings insignificant. There are a set of 11 photographs of parts of the book here: - I saw the book inh Abe once for $2700 . ~BTW Aleister Crowley in his "new translation" in 53 pages (from the Warburg) prefaces:Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.The importance attached to the Golden Verses by the Pythagoreans was cardinal. Every disciple was made to memorize them, an … [Click Below for Full Description]

John Nalson
S.Mearne. Binding as new, interior very good. About The Book An Impartial Collection of The Great Affairs of State, from the Beginning of The Scotch Rebellion in the year 1639, to the Murther of King Charles I. Wherein the first Occasions and the whole Series of the late Troubles in England, Scotland & Ireland are faithfully represented. Taken from Authentick Records and Methodically Digested by John Nalson LL.D. Two Volumes. London: S. Mearne, and others, 1682-1683. Folio. Frontispiece, (vi), lxxix, 817, (15) pages; Frontispiece, (vii), xii, 920, (22) pages, 1 plate. First editions. The interiors are complete and in remarkable condition - very good indeed. There has been some minor professional paper repair to the edges of the frontispiece in vol. 1 but none of this encroaches on the image and is unobtrusive. Vol. 2 has two very small pieces missing from the corners on two pages - again these are minor and do not affect the text. An historical account of the events surrounding and leading to the English Civil War. Volume I includes "The Mind of the Frontispiece" [Poem] and the engraved frontispiece by R. White in which Britannia is depicted crying in front of a ruined church in flames with battles in the background. Engraved portrait of the Earl of Stafford in second volume. The major work of John Nalson (c.1638-1686), an English clergyman, historian and political pamphleteer. The first volume of the text was published in 1682, and the second in 1683. The work was undertaken under the special patronage of Charles II and this, alongside Nalson's much advertised pro-monarchy … [Click Below for Full Description]

GUERREIRO, João Tavares de Velez.
Cordier, Sinica 3219; Howgego A47; Löwendahl 377; PorBase (4 copies). Second edition of a journal of the voyage of António de Albuquerque Coelho (Brazil ca. 1682-Goa ca. 1745) from Goa in India to Macao on the coast of southern China. The journal was written by João Tavares de Velez Guerreiro, a captain in the Portuguese navy, serving in India, who accompanied the governor on the voyage as his chief of staff. Coelho had been appointed governor of the city of Macao in 1717 and they arrived there in May 1718. They travelled via Madras, through the Malay peninsula and along the coasts of Indochina and China. Part 1 gives an account of the voyage itself and part 2 an account of their stay in Johor at the southern tip of the Malay peninsula, where they played a role in a coup d'état by a Sumatran adventurer.Printed on thick paper. With a 1732 inscription on the title-page. In very good condition. The first few leaves are slightly tattered at the fore-edge and have been professionally restored. The binding has been rebacked, and the boards show a few minor cuts and scrapes, but it remains in good condition. A valuable eye-witness account of India, Southeast Asia and China in 1718.

1682. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Giovan Battista Nani, a 17th-century Venetian ambassador and librarian, wrote his most famous book "History of Republic of Venice" in his free time. This work deals with the foundation of Venice as well as the Thirty Years' War. Nani writes of important figures from Flanders, Spain, Norway, Sweden, and other European powers such as: · Ferdinand II, Holy Roman Emperor · Christian IV of Denmark, Norway · Christian the Younger of Brusnwick, Halberstadt · Ernst von Mansfeld · Charles II Gonzaga · Ambrogio Spinola · Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden · Christina of Sweden · Cardinal Richelieu · Isabella Clara Eugenia, Netherlands This complete four-volume printing, translated by Francois Tallemand and Paulin de Masclari (Barbier), includes an added engraved title page and is illustrated throughout with 27 portrait engravings. This edition is particularly desirable because it was published by Elzevier. While the title page states 'Pierre Marteau', Marteau was a fictitious name of the famed Dutch printers.
