[Henry Care]
ont> George Larkin : London, 1682 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition.. The extremely scarce first edition of this important legal work which defends habeas corpus and produces arguments for many legal freedoms based on the Magna Carta. Care's work was the first law book sold and circulated colonial America. Rebound in a very smart full cloth binding. This work draws on the radical reading of the Magna Carta to defend the personal freedom of freeborn Englishmen. It defends trial by jury and established the persisting legal freedoms based on the Magna Carta. (BL Online). This polemical work was influential and reprinted many times in the American colonies as well as in Britain. It was responsible for bringing the Magna Carta to the forefront regarding historical study and interpretation of British law. Care's writing is said to have strongly influenced the American colonies, as it was the first printing of the Magna Carta and other fundamental legal documents. It describes English law, history, government and the Jury system. ESTC No. R30882. The British Library notes that upon initial publication this work was condemned as 'seditious by the authorities but it was repeatedly reproduced into the 18th century, being regarded as a handbook of civil liberties. ' Henry Care was a political writer and journalist, who specialised in anti-Catholic propaganda. He edited a paper called the 'Weekly Pacquet of Advice from Rome' which covered the history of the Protestant Reformation. He wrote this work to provide English persons who are uneducated or inexperienced regarding Law wi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Grew, Nehemiah
Printed by W. Rawlins, for the Author, 1682. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. Folio (318 x 193 mm). 11 ff., 304, [19] pp. With 83 engraved plates, of which 5 are double-page. Bound in contemporary English calf, rebacked, red morocco spine label (chipped with loss of 5 letters), extremities worn and partially defective; some soiling or browning internally. Plates 54-83 with stain along top margin. A good copy. Good. Nehemiah Grew is considered to be among the founders of the science of plant anatomy. This revised collected edition represents the first textbook on the subject, containing three earlier treatises: The Anatomy of Vegetables Begun (1672), An Idea of a Phytological History Propounded (1673), and The Comparative Anatomy of Trunks (1675). Grew's pioneering investigations into how organs and tissues are formed during plant growth led to the conception of the plant as a coordinated developing structure and marked the beginning of efforts to link structure and development. Along with Malpighi, Grew was the first to investigate internal plant anatomy: with the aid of the microscope, he demonstrated that plants have a characteristic ordered inner structure, (illustrated in his accurate and beautiful plates) and that all plant tissues could be broadly divided into "ligneous" (fibro-vascular) and "pithy" (parenchymatous) categories. He showed that the "cells" first observed by Robert Hooke made up the normal structure of the parenchyma, and came very close to recognizing the universal cellular structure of plants. He believed that a plant's sexual organs were contained in its flo … [Click Below for Full Description]

Craufurd (a.k.a. Crawfurd), James, fl. 1669-1682
Printed by J[ohn] D[arby] for Richard Chiswell, 1682. First Edition. Softcover. Small quarto. Collation: A-H4 (final verso blank), COMPLETE. Pagination: 63, [1] pp. Recent sympathetic wrappers. Small 19th-century printed booklabel on upper left corner of title-page ("1047"). Unobtrusive blind-stamp of the now-defunct Theological Institute of Connecticut on first and least leaves. Preserved in a fine protective case. Very good. ¶ FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. Ours is apparently the only copy on the market. A rare tract condemning Scottish resistance theory, in which the author, an Episcopalian cleric, complains that the Scots had been "unhappily brought into such a corruption of morals as has not been hitherto known among Christians [...] Are not assassinations taught, as well as practis'd amoung us?" (p. 4). ¶ Craufurd echoes the distinction stridently made by Thomas Hobbes in 'Leviathan' who had insisted that "Law, and Right, differ as much as Obligation and Liberty." (SOURCE: Clare Jackson, "Restoration Scotland, 1660-1690: royalist politics, religion and ideas" p. 62). ¶ Craufurd, of Camlard, Dalmellington, was Historiographer Royal of Scotland at the time of Charles II. ¶ REFERENCES: Wing (2nd ed.) Venetia, presso Gio. Giacomo Hertz, 1682. [Click Below for Full Description]

KIRCHER, Athanasius
T'Amsteldam: By d'erfgenemen van wylen Joannes Janssonius van Waasberge, 1682. 1682 1ed Mundus Subterraneus Kircher Geology DRAGONS Demons Alchemy ATLANTISAthanasius Kircher was a 17th-century Jesuit scholar who published works on a wide variety of topics. He studied magnetism, geology, medicine, even Egyptian hieroglyphs. Perhaps, though, his most important contribution to the scientific world was his book 'Mundus Subterraneus' - a collection of his geological and geographical studies. According to Merrill,"Major topics include gravity, the moon, the sun, eclipses, ocean currents, subterranean waters and fires, meteorology, rivers and lakes, hydraulics, minerals and fossils, subterranean giants, beasts and demons, poisons, metallurgy and mining, alchemy, the universal seed and the generation of insects, herbs, astrological medicine, distillation and fireworks."In this monumental work, Kircher extensively describes countless aspects of the physical world - a description of the interior of Vesuvius, unexplained noises in the Strait of Messina, large human bones of extinct giant races, and, most intriguingly, a section devoted to the lost island of Atlantis. Kircher even includes a map of the island "Situs Insulae Atlantidis".This 1682 first Dutch edition is filled with impressive, detailed illustrations of rocks, fossils, maps, animals, human remains, and even mythical creatures such as dragons and giants! Kircher even describes battles with dragons! Other topics covered include descriptions of Iroquois Indians, gold and silver mining in America, and much more.Item number: # … [Click Below for Full Description]

'The Tale of the Heike,' a medieval Japanese epic, which is to the Japanese what the Iliad is to the Western world is a prolific source of later dramas, ballads, and tales. Bulstrode Whitlocke's "Memorials of the English Affairs" is a rare, late 17th-century account of the political events that occurred in England during the reigns of Charles I, Oliver Cromwell and Charles II. The title itself claims that to book includes military and civil interests, as well as secrets of the royal cabinet; however, this book is also a supreme source on the 'Puritan Revolution' or English Civil War. Found within its contents are detailed descriptions of the events leading up to, during, and after the English Civil Wars, all from the Parliamentary perspective. Recorded are various speeches and events surrounding the conflict between Charles I, Oliver Cromwell, and the English government. Among these events include a record of the trial and execution of Charles I, the establishment of Oliver Cromwell as Lord Protector, and the 1660 restoration of the monarchy in Charles II. This title belonged to one William Petty, 1st Marquess of Lansdowne, formerly The Earl of Shelburne, who was the Prime Minister of Great Britain during the final months of the American Revolutionary War. He succeeded in securing peace with America. The similarities between his political circumstances and the contents of this work are utterly fascinating and shed light on the likely reasoning behind his former ownership of such a title as this. Also referenced are the careers of Thomas Fairfax, John Lambert, and William Penn of the Quakers. [Attributes: First Edition]

[Click Below for Full Description]
