1682. LES DERNIERS EFFORTS DE L'INNOCENCE AFFLIGÉE - Volume I and II (bound together in this single book), par (PIERRE JURIEU). A LA HAYE : CHEZ ABRAHAM ARONDEUS, Marchand Libraire au Palais, a l'Enseigne du Roy de France, M. DC. LXXXII (1682). This book almost immediately became an important and controversial work that was quickly reprinted, most notably by Chez David Dufour, Ville Franche, who republished the book in several editions also in the year 1682. VELLUM BOUND, small format 3" x 5.25", two parts in this one book (complete), pagination: [4], 182; [2],160 pages. I collated both Volume I and Volume II page-by-page with the copy of each volume held in the Rare Book Holdings of the Bavarian State Library, Germany. Those rare copies were digitized in 2010. Condition: The vellum covers are yellowed with age, stained, worn through along some of the edges, are peeling at the folds and edges, and have a 1/2 piece missing at the bottom of the spine; the inner rear hinge has completely split, exposing the inner binding and meaning that the vellum covers are almost disbound (a strong tug would remove them from the inner bound text. There is interesting very early writing, in French, on the front pastedown, the rear free endpaper, and on a laid-in slip of paper; there is also a signature on the very last page of text of Volume II. There is a handwritten date of 1712 on the front pastedown, but I don't know if all the writing is from that time or not. The front and rear pastedowns are soiled, creased, and have large tears. The first page of Volume I is soiled, has a dime-size e … [Click Below for Full Description]

HEYLYN Peter
1682. Seventh edition. Folio (349 x 220 mm); four parts in one volume; engraved general title-page, letterpress title-page printed red and black, four sectional title-pages, four folding engraved maps of the continents (Africa and America trimmed to the printed area, Asia shaved at the head). Moderate wear to extremities of boards, spine rubbed; additional new end-papers; two ownership inscriptions, one dated 1736. London : for Philip Chetwind, Benjamin Tooke and Thomas Sawbridge, Heylyn?s Cosmographie was first published by Henry Seile in 1652. Heylyn (1600-1662) was a lecturer in historical geography, and churchman, appointed personal chaplain to King Charles I. The Cosmographie was the most substantial English geography of its day, an enlargement of the author?s Microcosmus, now expanded to near a thousand pages, with a suite of four maps of the continents, dated 1652. The book was a success, and much reprinted. This seventh edition appeared under the joint imprint of several leading English booksellers and publishers. The maps are now reprinted from replacement printing plates. The maps of Europe, Asia and Africa bear the imprint of Philip Chetwind, dated 1666, while the America is credited to Seile?s widow, Ann(e) (or Anna) Seile, and dated 1663. The map of America derives from John Speed?s map from 1627; it is one of the earliest English maps of the Americas, naming many English settlements along the east coast, and also depicts California as an island. Dublin: Joseph Ray, 1682. Second Edition. Hardcover (rebound in leather). Very Good Condition. Rebound in contemporary leather, extensive contemporary notes to front endpapers, one endpaper with the upper right corner torn. Quite clean internally - in two parts, a third was published in 1689. (14), 70, (8), 154pp The first and second parts of Ware's extensive and pernicious forgeries of church history intended to stir up anti-Catholic, anti-Irish and anti-Jesuit sentiment. They played a large role in the absurd stories surrounding the Popish Plot and many of Ware's creations continued to pollute reformation history into the 19th, 20th and even 21st centuries. Ware was the son of a prominent historian and used his father John's name to legitimize the documents that he "found" - one of the most long lived forgeries was a Cranmer letter at the beginning of part two which entered into Cranmer's works and was preserved for centuries through misattributions (by historians such as John Strype) and wishful thinking.

COLQUITT, Anthony
London: for T. Basset, 1682. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. 'Modern Reports' is an extensive set of books published in the 17th- and 18th-centuries in England describing various court cases - reason for the ruling and outcome. Edited and collected by Anthony Colquitt, these works are known to be referenced and used in law schools throughout the western world. And while they are used for educational purposes, they are exceedingly rare and rarely available for sale or placed at auctions. This specific set of five volumes was from the library of Irish lawyer Constantine Phipps, Lord Chancellor of Ireland.

Monteage, Stephen
London: Printed by John Richardson for Ben. Billingsley, 1682. Second edition of this rare accounting book; one of the earliest in published in English for a general audience. Octavo, bound in full contemporary calf, red morocco spine label lettered in gilt, woodcut frontispiece portrait of the author within a rich botanical border. In very good condition. Scarce. "Most of the writings on accounting then available were written for wealthy merchants, who kept a variety of journals, cash books, petty-charge lists, and invoice registers. Ordinary people were not familiar with such procedures, and if they kept accounts at all they probably used a charge-discharge system. Monteage's treatise addressed middle-class merchants. They were advised to keep detailed accounts in a simplified system, based only upon two records, a 'waste' book, or record of first entry, and a general ledger, where these entries were reconciled in a double-entry system" (DNB).

ATHENAGORAS, of Athens
Oxonii: Theatro Sheldoniano, 1682. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Athenagoras was a 2nd-century early Church Father from Athens. While few of his writings still exist today, those that do were highly influential on other early philosophers such as Eusebius. In his book 'Embassy for the Christians', Athenagoras pleads to Marcus Aurelius that he and his son Commodus show mercy to Christians and stop their unjust discrimination. This book also directly denounced paganism and sought to prove to the Roman rulers that God was the one and only true God. He also discusses the horrors of cannibalism, the evils of Gladiator contests, and the use of drugs. His other works all seemed to stem from 'Embassy' - defenses of his views and Christian doctrines. This 1682 Oxford edition of the works of Athenagoras was translated out of the Greek into Latin by Conrad Gessner. Printed in Greek and Latin on opposite pages. [Attributes: First Edition]

London: Printed for R. Bentley and M. Magnes, 1682. Duodecimo (15 x 9 cm.), title leaf, [22], 563 pages. Illustrated with forty-one pages of woodcuts of which a few depict table settings and the majority the carving of various fowl (capon, turkey, goose, duck, pigeon, woodcock, partridge, pheasant, etc.), veal, mutton, wild boar, pig, hare, fish, and lobster and the decorative carving of fruit. ~ FIRST & ONLY EDITION IN ENGLISH. One of the most important titles of 17th Century French gastronomy, and to some, one of the rarest cookery books in the English language. There are few recorded copies and most all existing copies appear to be imperfect, i.e. primarily lacking pages, while this copy is complete. Bitting notes, "Despite the claim 'The like never before extant in any language,' the book is a translation of 'L'Escole parfaite des officiers de bouches,' first published in 1662. The English translation is much scarcer than the original." Simon Gough states with insight in one of his wonderfully eccentric Food for Thought catalogues, "it is curious how few great collections of cookery books contain this volume". By way of an answer, he further declares it, "one of the rarest cookery books in the English language". In six books, (here translated): "Steward of the Family", "The Great Master Carver", "The Royal Butler", "The Royal Confectioner", "The Royal French Master Cook", and "The Royal Pastry Man". Internally remarkably bright and clean. Full brown calf; original boards, attractively rebacked, and with gilt titled, red morocco spine label. FIRST EDITION, Second Issue of the first work (per ESTC) with all the errors but one in the last line of p. 6 corrected, C1 (p. 5-6) a cancel, and signature B mis-signed A; FIRST EDITION, Second Issue of the second work (with "Fleet-Street" on title page and 12 lines on final page); FIRST PRINTING of the third work, with "Transpros'd" instead of "Transpos'd"; "Elegy" a reprint with "loyalty and integrity" in the title. This is a desirable collection containing an early issue of perhaps the greatest satire in English, along with its rather elusive second part; Elkanah Settle's response to the first part, which resulted in his being skewered by Dryden in Part II; and a leaf with Dryden's 1659 poem praising Cromwell, reprinted in hopes of embarrassing the poet in Restoration England. In the first part, Dryden draws a parallel between the Bible and the ambitions of Charles II's illegitimate son the Duke of Monmouth (abetted by the Earl of Shaftesbury) to replace his father's Roman Catholic brother James, Duke of York. As the name of our poem indicates, Dryden uses the Old Testament story of the machinations of King David's son Absalom and his advisor Achitophel, with the moral of the story clear at the end: Absalom is killed in battle and Achitophel commits suicide--an obvious caution to Monmouth and Salisbury. Dryden's rival playwright Elkanah Settle (1648-1724) attempted a riposte with "Absalom Senior," flipping the story to cast the duke of York as Absalom and the marquess of Halifax as Achitop … [Click Below for Full Description]
