Illustrated with => nine copper-engraved plates, this English edition has its tables and illustrations an "Ethiopic Alphabet"; a folding botanical study of "the Indian Figg"; another folding plate of an "Eastern sheep" whose tail is so fat it needs to be drawn behind him in a cart; and renditions of elephants, apes (i.e., monkeys) eating ants, and hippos with entertainingly implausible teeth. Provenance: Front pastedown with bookplate "Acquired for the Blumhaven Library," the rare book and manuscript collection of Philadelphia textile magnate Herman Blum; this plate notes that the book was at the Bethlehem, NH, "branch" of the Library, i.e., Blum's summer home. MUNTING, A.
Amsterdam, Jan Rieuwertsz., 1682. 4to. pp. (40), 656, (20), with engraved frontispiece and 40 engraved plates. Contemporary vellum. Second edition, first published in 1672. Abraham Munting (1626-1683) was the son of Hendrik Munting, who had founded in 1642 a botanical garden situated within the fortification circuit of Groningen known as the 'Paradise of Groningen', with its hothouses and forcing frames. It was famous throughout Europe and a place of horticultural pilgrimage. His son, Abraham, director of the garden from 1658, greatly enlarged the garden. The 'Waare oeffening der Planten' describes to a large extend trees and plants of the garden. The work was expanded to a folio format adding new text and plates and appeared in Dutch 'Naaukeurige Beschryving der Aardgewassen' in 1696 and Latin 'Phytographia curiosa' 1702. Our copy seems to lack the last leaf. The Register is complete but there is a small supplementary register 'Register Eeniger vernaamste Gedenkweerdigheden', which should have one more leaf. However of the above edition we have 2 copies both lacking this last leaf. The present copy is most likely an early issue.//Provenance: Signature on free endpaper 'Amico M. Slakman, Hugo de Vries Dec. 1932'//Hunt 363; Nissen BBI, 1430; Paradisus Batavus, 40.

SWAMMERDAM, J.
Small-4to. pp. (8), 215, (1), with woodcut title-vignette, 1 folded table and 13 (10 folded) engraved plates. Contemporary boards, spine with 2 red gilt lettered labels. Hagen II, 209; Horn & Schenkling 21794; Nissen ZBI, 4054. First French edition; the original Dutch edition was published in 1669, entitled 'Historia Insectorum generalis'. "Swammerdam's thesis about insects was fundamentally new and significant. For his contemporaries, as for Aristotle, there existed three good arguments, that not only placed the insects far from the higher animals, but even tended to remove them from the realm of subjects open to scientific study. These arguments were: insects lack internal anatomy; they originate by spontaneous generation; and they develop by metamorphosis. Swammerdam believed that all three arguments were false and devoted a wide variety of investigations to refute these ideas" (D.S.B. XIII, pp. 168-175). One leaf with 2 small tears.

It contains some of John Locke's weather records and the 'Advertsisement to the Reader' on pp.iii-vis by Locke. During his stay in Oxford Locke had kept a journal of the air from June 24th 1666 to June 30th 1683. This journal was transmitted to Boyle and was included in the General History and is found on pp.104-132 A Register kept by Mr Locke in Oxford as well as London between December 1669 to June 1665. It is a Baconian style natural history, a collection of observations and testimonies on the nature of the air. It reflects Boyle's interest in the relation between the air and epidemics. The manuscript of the book survives amongst Locke's papers in the Lovelace Collection in the Bodleian Library.

Glanvill, Joseph.
London, Thomas Newcomb, (1681-)1682. 8vo. (18), 52, (12), 86, (2), 89-162, (6), 78 pp., 1 bl. f., (12), 273, (1), 67, (3), 5-45, (17), 20 (instead of 24) pp. (wants two final leaves of text, including an engraving on p. 23, as well as final errata leaf, all supplied in facsimile). With engr. frontispiece (Witch of Endor) and engr. six-piece title page. Contemp. calf (wanting lower cover). Second edition. - Joseph Glanvill's famous book on witchcraft, which first appeared posthumously in 1681. The editor is presumed to have been Henry More, who certainly contributed to the volume. This second edition is the first to include topical material on witchcraft in Sweden, supplied by Anthony Horneck (from a Dutch pamphlet of 1670). The book affirms the existence of witches with malign supernatural powers of magic, and attacks skepticism concerning their abilities. Glanvill likens these skeptics to the Sadducees, members of a Jewish sect from around the time of Jesus who were said to have denied the immortality of the soul. The book is also noted for the account of the "Drummer of Tedworth", an early poltergeist story. "Saducismus Triumphatus" strongly influenced Cotton Mather in his "Discourse on Witchcraft" (1689) and the notorious witch trials held in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1692/93. Mather's "Wonders of the Invisible World" (1693) is largely modeled after this book and its reports, particularly the material relating to the Mora witch trial of 1669. - Some browning as usual. Spine severely damaged; wants lower cover and final 3 ff. Wing (2nd ed.) G823. Cf. Yale, Alchemy II, 501, … [Click Below for Full Description]

KEULEN, J. VAN
Amsterdam 1682 - Fine hand color; on two-ply paper as issued, excellent condition. One of the first, if not the first, printed chart to focus on the Yucatan Peninsula. It highlights the vital shipping lanes between Cuba, at lower left, and the Yucatan. The finely engraved chart is oriented with north to the bottom and includes the island of Cozumel. Its place names are all in Spanish suggesting a Spanish source for this Dutch chart.

VAN KEULEN, J.
Amsterdam 1682 - Superb hand color; lower margin extended with slight loss, else fine with strong impression on heavy paper. One of the earliest printed charts to specifically focus on the Carolina coast and one of the most attractive maps of the area overall. The chart extends from the Chesapeake Bay to northern Florida. While van Keulen used a variety of sources, not all of the identifiable, generally speaking, Spanish sources inform the more southerly areas, while in the northern part of the map, more accurate English sources predominate. There is an inset of Charlestown Harbor above the cartouche. The Van Keulen firm was a leading supplier of charts, instruments, and maritime related books of uncommon longevity. It remained a family controlled business until 1823 and then continued to operate under another owner until 1885. Cumming/ De Vorsey, Southeast, no. 91; Koeman IV, no. 18, p. 376; Burden II, no. 589.

Cyprianus Caecilius
. . Seltene Ausgabe der Werke des Hl. Cyprian, Kirchenvater u. Bischof v. Karthago, kommentiert v. J. Fell, Erzbischof v. Oxford.- "In 1682 appeared the magnificent large folio, the fruit of Fell's long study of the Father whose stand against Rome and special theory of the episcopate gave him a unique appeal to Anglicans... The folio comprised all the saint's writings, copiously annotated by Fell, and a new Life, Annales Cyprianici, which was compiled by the greatest English patristic scholar of the age, John Pearson... Fell's apparatus is impressive; his collations numerous, his notes copius. The composition of the text is creditable to an English press; the paper is excellent and the presswork admirable... The book represents the greatest of Fell's contributions to patriotic scholarship and the exposition of the position of the Anglican Church."
