Pierre JURIEU
La Haye, The Hague, The Netherlands: CHEZ ABRAHAM ARONDEUS, 1682. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Fair. LES DERNIERS EFFORTS DE L'INNOCENCE AFFLIGÉE - Volume I and II (bound together in this single book), par (PIERRE JURIEU). A LA HAYE : CHEZ ABRAHAM ARONDEUS, Marchand Libraire au Palais, a l'Enseigne du Roy de France, M. DC. LXXXII (1682). This book almost immediately became an important and controversial work that was quickly reprinted, most notably by Chez David Dufour, Ville Franche, who republished the book in several editions also in the year 1682. VELLUM BOUND, small format 3" x 5.25", two parts in this one book (complete), pagination: [4], 182; [2],160 pages. I collated both Volume I and Volume II page-by-page with the copy of each volume held in the Rare Book Holdings of the Bavarian State Library, Germany. Those rare copies were digitized in 2010. Condition: The vellum covers are yellowed with age, stained, worn through along some of the edges, are peeling at the folds and edges, and have a 1/2 piece missing at the bottom of the spine; the inner rear hinge has completely split, exposing the inner binding and meaning that the vellum covers are almost disbound (a strong tug would remove them from the inner bound text. There is interesting very early writing, in French, on the front pastedown, the rear free endpaper, and on a laid-in slip of paper; there is also a signature on the very last page of text of Volume II. There is a handwritten date of 1712 on the front pastedown, but I don't know if all the writing is from that time or not. The front and rear pasted … [Click Below for Full Description]

A Tryal of Witches is an account of the Lowestoft Witchcraft trial conducted at Bury St. Edmonds. Well-known in its day, this remains the most famous English witchcraft trial because it was, thanks to this account, well-documented. Also, it involved many leading jurists and experts of the day, most notably Thomas Browne, a physician who presented one of the earliest examples of psychiatric testimony as an expert witness. Some experts believe this account inspired the Salem Witchcraft trials. Indeed, Browne's testimony was quoted at that trial by Cotton Mather. A Tryal of Witches was later appended to Hale's Short Treatise Touching Sheriffs Accompts (1683). Excluding copies issued with the 1683 treatise, OCLC locat … [Click Below for Full Description]

Robert Boyle
London : Miles Flesher for Richard Davis, bookseller in Oxford, 1682 The 3rd edition of Boyle's work on Air (first published 1660) in 3 parts, bound with the 2nd edition, published in 1664, of the first part of his work on the usefulness of Experimental Natural Philosophy (first published in June 1663), and, probably, the first edition of the second part of Natural Philosophy published in 1671. In contemporary vellum binding - with some marking and cracking at the joints, and a small repair at the bottom of the spine. 'New Experiments' was a landmark work enabled by Torricelli's development of the mercury barometer. This allowed Boyle to carry out his series of experiments based on reducing air pressure; using the barometer to provide objective measurements. Experiment 43 is particularly significant: Boyle placed warm water in a vessel and then reduced the air pressure and observed the outcome. The water started to 'boil', thus demonstrating that the liquid/air interface is affected by pressure as well as temperature. It is now known that even cold water can transition in to water vapour if the atmospheric pressure is lowered enough to allow the water molecule to escape from the liquid phase. Boyle's Spring and Weight of Air, published in 1682, set out his defence against strong criticism from Franciscus Linus who refused to accept the existence of a vacuum. The third book is An Examination of Mr 'Hobbs' Dialogus Physicus. Hobbes criticised Boyle's experiments, claiming that 'subtle air' had entered his apparatus either via the stop cock, or by permeating through the glass i … [Click Below for Full Description]

This influential pamphlet defined a hearing before grand jury of peers as a fundamental English right. An assertion of the priority of the law over the English crown, it was written to support the right of a grand jury to reject the bill of indictment against Anthony Ashley-Cooper, First Earl of Shaftesbury, issued by Charles II (a pro-Catholic monarch). Published anonymously, this work is attributed in most sources to Somers. A barrister of the Middle Temple and an important Whig statesman, he was Lord Chancellor of England during the reigns of William and Mary and Queen Anne and presided over the framing of the Bill of Rights (1689). As one would suspect, this book was studied by the American founding fathers. Sweet & Maxwell, A Legal Bibliography of the Br … [Click Below for Full Description]
