STERBEECK, JOHANNES FRANCISCUS VAN
Joseph Jacobs, Antwerp, 1682. 4to(20.0 x 16.3 cm). Contemporary full black calf. Some breaks along spine, cords and boards firmly attached. Some wear to corners and ends of spine. Collation: [40], 296, [18] pp. +14 copper engraved plates, folded. Plates and frontispiece were engraved by Francois Ertinger. The Frontispiece was a design prepared by C. E. Best. There is also a full page engraved coat of arms of dedicatee, Justus de Nobelaer. In typical Baroque effusiveness, the title page includes a synopsis of the contents. Included are: detailed descriptions of the exotic plants including their flowers, leaves and fruit; how to plant and care for the trees; citrus diseases and pests. The text and plates provide extensive discussion and illustration on the cultivation of exotic fruit trees. These include lemon, orange, passion fruit, lime trees, pomegranates, laurels and others. The beautiful engraved botanical plates are based on those done by botanist Giovanni Battista Ferrari and also engraved by Francois Ertinger. The plates contain fruit, flower and leaves of the plant. This is most useful for identifying cultivated or indigenous plant. An example being the copper engraving of the orange by Ertinger titled "aurantiae flores," or flowers of the orange, shows not just the flowers, but the leaves and fruit of the orange as well. Ertinger was born in 1640 in Schwaben, Germany, but worked in Antwerp where in the 1670s. He was a master of the St. Lucas guild. Here he collaborated with the priest and botanist Franciscus van Sterbeeck on this book. The citrus illustrations are c … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gali et Ramon, Hieronymus
1682. Guidance for Catalonian Notaries Gali et Ramon, Hieronymus. Opera Artis Notariae, Theoricam Simul, Et Practicam Eruditionem Complectentia. Barcelona: Ex Typographia Hyacinthi Andreu, 1682. [xii], 672 [i.e. 674], [16] pp. Folio (12" x 8"). Contemporary limp vellum, early calligraphic title to spine, ties lacking, endpapers renewed. Light soiling, spine slightly darkened, minor spotting to boards, some wear to spine ends and corners, two tiny chips to front joint. Title page, with woodcut vignette, printed within typographical border, woodcut typographical head-pieces. Light toning to text, somewhat heavier in places, faint dampspotting, mostly to margins, faint dampstaining to heads of preliminaries and the next few leaves, internally clean. Ex-library. Bookplate to front pastedown. A nice copy of a rare title. $1,500. * First edition. In the civil and canon law systems of seventeenth-century Europe notaries occupied an important place in the legal hierarchy analogous to a present-day British solicitor. Ramon's handbook addresses the needs of a canon-law notary in Catalonia. It is an excellent source of information about notarial practices in that part of Spain. A second edition was published in 1684. Including both edition, OCLC locates 3 copies in North America, 1 in a law library (Harvard, which has a first edition). 1682 ca 1682 - In-folio manuscrit de (224) ff., maroquin rouge, dos orné à nerfs, double filet doré d'encadrement sur les plats avec fleurons d'angle, tranches dorées (reliure de l'époque). MATTIOLI, Felice.
Fulignio: Antonio Marriotti: 1682. First edition. Original publishers paper covered boards. Recent buckram spine. Title on a paper label to the spine. The book contains forty sermons by Mattioli. There are numerous woodcut vignettes, historiated capitals and other designs. Title (end papers look newer, although still quite old), dedication, imprimatur, author note, subject index, twenty sermons, biblical index, index of notable things, printer's register. NB - the text is entirely in Italian. There is a digitised copy of part of a first edition (up to p 184) (held at the Bavarian State Library). This has an ornate additional page (in the style of a title). I believe this is a later large bookplate. There are two reasons for this. Although the digitisation makes it hard to certain, this looks like a steel engraving, it is certainly in a different style to any of the woodcuts. Additionally, my copy, which is complete, has its complete register, and so is not lacking any pages. [xvi], 1-512, i-xxvii pp. The publisher's paper boards have a few minor stains to them. The spine is new, and is in "as new" condition. The end papers (and inside board lining) looks newer, but has a watermark of a bird on three mountains. I have traced this back to three items, all bound in Italy between 1650 and 1690 - so they probably are original. The title page has some darkening / foxing to it, the rest of the pages have a touch of darkening / marking. The binding has slightly cracked to register +, but is still holding well. A couple of the pages have closed tears, where they have strained to t … [Click Below for Full Description]

1682 - A Famous Witchcraft Trial [Trial]. Cullender, Rose [d. 1665], Defendant. Duny, Amy [d. 1665], Defendant. Hale, Sir Matthew [1609-1676], Judge. A Tryal of Witches, At the Assizes Held at Bury St. Edmonds for the County of Suffolk; On the Tenth Day of March, 1664. Before Sir Matthew Hale, Kt. Then Lord Chief Baron of His Majesties Court of Exchequer. London: Printed for William Shrewsbery, 1682. [iv], 59 pp. Octavo (6-1/2" x 4"). Later three-quarter calf over marbled boards, gilt rules to boards, gilt title to spine, marbled endpapers. Moderate rubbing to extremities, light rubbing to boards, which are slightly warped, armorial bookplates to front pastedown and free endpaper, top-edge of text block trimmed closely, text not affected. Moderate toning to text, light foxing in places. Early owner signature to title page, interior otherwise clean. * First edition. A Tryal of Witches is an account of the Lowestoft Witchcraft trial conducted at Bury St. Edmonds. Well-known in its day, this remains the most famous English witchcraft trial because it was, thanks to this account, well-documented. Also, it involved many leading jurists and experts of the day, most notably Thomas Browne, a physician who presented one of the earliest examples of psychiatric testimony as an expert witness. Some experts believe this account inspired the Salem Witchcraft trials. Indeed, Browne's testimony was quoted at that trial by Cotton Mather. A Tryal of Witches was later appended to Hale's Short Treatise Touching Sheriffs Accompts (1683). Excluding copies issued with the 1683 treatise, OCLC loca … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lithgow, William.
1682. (8), 481, (7) pp. With woodcut frontispiece and 6 woodcut plates, all folding. Later brown sheepskin with giltstamped red spine label. Marbled endpapers. 8vo. Somewhat later edition of this famous work that saw twelve editions by 1814, originally published under the title "The total discourse, of the rare adventures, and painefull peregrinations of long nineteene years travayles, from Scotland to the most famous kingdomes in Europe, Asia, and Affrica" in 1632; a first draft had appeared in 1614. No copy of this 1682 edition at auction in 35 years. - Lithgow, a Scot, travelled extensively throughout the Levant in three journeys between 1610 and 1622, visiting Greece, Constantinople and the Eastern Mediterranean from 1610-13; North Africa and Italy from 1614-19; and Spain from 1619-21. "He travelled mostly on foot and had a greater knowledge of the interior of the countries he visited than most travellers of this period. He provides interesting details of the society, men, and manners he observed" (Blackmer). Lithgow's work is "probably the earliest authority for coffee-drinking in Europe, Turkish baths, a pigeon post between Aleppo and Bagdad, the long Turkish tobacco-pipes, artificial incubation, and the importation (since about 1550) of currants from Zante to England" (DNB). - Frontispiece laid down. Several minor defects to paper, pre-dating the printing process, to fols. G2, Aa1, Ee3, and Hh5 (hence slight loss to individual letters). Trimmed rather closely, with some headlines shaved.
