Enríquez Gómez, Antonio.
publisher not identified. Of Portuguese-Jewish origins, Enríquez Gómez was a dramatist and novelist who found it both convenient and necessary to flee Spain for France in about 1636 (when he was about 35 years old) and luckily found favor at the court of Louis XIII. Around 1657 he moved to Amsterdam and openly professed his Judaism, causing him to be burned in effigy in Spain. His present novel mixes elements of the picaresque with fantasy. As one scholar succinctly put it: "The Siglo Pitagorico of Antonio Enriquez Gomez (1644) . . . ingeniously replace[s] the passage of a servant from master to master by the transmigrations of a soul from body to body. The longest prose section of this partially versified narrative was the 'Life' of Don Gregorio Guadana, [who is out and out] a picaro" (Chandler, p. 13). The same scholar neatly connects this Spanish novel to an English one that appeared 100 years later (1749): "It is in the device of satire upon estates through transmigrations in lieu of successive employments that Fielding [in his Journey from this World to the Next] recalls the Siglo Pitagorico of Enriquez Gomez" (p. 802). This is a "fictitious imprint" in that => its given date is false, there being two distinct editions each with a title-page stating it is "Segun el exemplar en Rohan, De la emprenta de Lavrentio Maurry. MDCLXXXII" but with one edition's last numbered page being 268 and the other's being 292 (i.e., 308) as offered here. Charles Amiel argues convincingly based on textual analysis, in his critical edition of the work, that the 292/308-page edition in … [Click Below for Full Description]

RADEMAN (or RADEMANN), Joachim
1682. Title within elaborate calligraphic woodcut border (title a little soiled & frayed around edges). 242 leaves (the last a blank). Small folio, cont. blind-stamped panelled pigskin over wooden boards (binding somewhat soiled, pigskin at one corner worn away), remains of clasps & catches. Hamburg: A. Lichtenstein, 1682. First edition, extremely rare, of this large and comprehensive Hamburg manual of accounting techniques. Only two other copies seem to be extant: one at the British Library and the other Tübingen. The book was a success and a second edition was published in 1714 under the title Der Werth-geschätzte Handels-Mann. Joachim Rademann was a chartered accountant at Hamburg. At the end of this, his first published work, he describes himself a "young man" and, according to Schröder, he married in 1683; otherwise, nothing seems to be known of his life. Based on Christoph Achatius Hager's treatise Buchhalten uber proper Commission und Compagnia Handlungen, first published at Hamburg ca. 1625, Rademann's book takes into consideration the changes and innovations that trading and coinage had seen since then, and focuses on practical matters. The general ledger section comprises a Memorial, a Journal, and a Hauptbuch; the associated accounts include a Cassa-Buch (cash journal), a Banca-Buch (bank account), an Unkostenbuch (book of charges), a Monat-Buch (monthly journal), and a Factura-Buch and Rechnungs-Copey-Buch (books of invoices). Precise examples taken from actual trading accounts at Hamburg are given throughout. "Rademann dispenses wit … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: Thom Newcomb, 1682, 1681. Second edition and with the translation, with additional material. Engraved frontispiece of Saul and Samuel, and a second full page engraving introducing the book which contains engraved vignettes of magical devils and extraordinary occurrences, also with a few small textual illustrations. 8vo, in a pleasing binding of full contemporary calf, restored at the back, incorporating raised bands, and gilt lettering. [16], 52, 162, [6], 78, [12], 273, 67, 45, 24, errata pp. A handsome and pleasing copy. Well preserved and with the text-block, clean, unpressed and unwashed. The first important work in English pertaining to Witchcraft and "the most influential English philosophical treatise on the subject of witches and witchcraft". 'The intention here was to prove by intellectual reasoning that the supernatural was an absolute reality. Glanvill and his contemporary the Cambrige Platonist Henry More, attacked the extreme skepticism in these matters espoused by Descartes and Hobbes. Their defense of witchcraft, made after extensive enquiry into the many contemporary reported incidents of it, 'was the natural result of an attempt to find an empirical ground for a belief in the supernatural' (DNB) and was intended to combat what they believed to be an implied atheism in the thinking of Descartes and Hobbes.' see also Croft.

Antonio Henriquez Gomez
Laurentio Maurry, Rohan, 1682. Somewhat later edition of this famous work that saw twelve editions by 1814, originally published under the title "The total discourse, of the rare adventures, and painefull peregrinations of long nineteene years travayles, from Scotland to the most famous kingdomes in Europe, Asia, and Affrica" in 1632; a first draft had appeared in 1614. "He travelled mostly on foot and had a greater knowledge of the interior of the countries he visited than most travellers of this period. He provides interesting details of the society, men, and manners he observed" (Blackmer). London, 1682. 8vo, pp. 360, 308. Contents collated, and four instances of mis-numbering of pages noted, but text is continuous. Two small blemishes to margins. Hale (1609 - 1676) was a famous English barrister, judge, legal scholar and philosopher. He was counsel for Sir John Bramston (1641) and Archbishop Laud (1643); he was said to have offered to plead for Charles I during his impeachment; he took a prominent part in the legal affairs of Cromwell's parliaments during the interregnum, and was appointed a justice of the Court of Common Pleas in 1654. In 1660, he was made Lord Chief Baron of the Exchequer and knighted in 1662, the same year during which he presided at the trial and conviction of two women charged with witchcraft. In 1671 he was appointed Lord Chief Justice of the Court of King's Bench. During his lifetime, he published two scientific works. His posthumous works include this title (first published in 1676) and "Pleas of the Crown" (1678). Our offering is in two parts; the first "Printed for W. Shrowsberey [sic] and J. Leigh, and are to be Sold by J. Phillips at the 'Seven Stars' in St. Paul's Church-yard, and H. Rodes next door to the Bear Tavern near Bride-lane in Fleet-street." And the second part "Printed for William Shrowsbury at the 'Bible' in Duke-lane, and John Leigh at Stationers-Hall". Part I contains a full page frontispiece of Hale, engraved on copper, an unsigned Preface and a brief page outlining the contents. Part II contains a separate title page, Preface and table of contents. The original binding was in rough shape, and we have had our binde … [Click Below for Full Description]

1682. 4to. (16), 170, (20) pp., final blank. With engraved vignette to title, printed in red an black. (With:) Ettmüller, Michael. De virtute opii diaphoretica dissertatio. Leipzig & Jena, Krebs for Bielcke, [1682]. 48 pp. Contemp. marbled half vellum. Second edition of this early monograph on the pharmacological and therapeutic aspects of opium. "The main text is a reissue of the 1674 edition" (Krivatsy). Wedel not only evaluates the medical literature but also all available travel reports. The chapter entitled "An aphrodisiacum sit opium & mulierem excitet?" provides an overview of the various opinions, including Saar's account from his East Indian journeys noting the use of opium in Batavian brothels, as well as Garcia's contradictory information that opium leads to infertility and impotence (p. 128f.). The title vignette depicts a Turkish opium picker: scratching the poppy seed capsule with his knife, he collects the sap. The appendix contains the first printing of a dissertation on the qualities of opium, written by Michael Ettmüller (d. 1683), who dedicated his work to his colleage Wedel. - G. W. Wedel (1645-1721) was one of the principal physicians of his age. He authored 49 books and was the teacher of several progressively minded medical men. He is credited with the timeless aphorism that "medicine is nothing but the incessant renewal of ignorance." His "Opiologia" won him admission to the Academy of Naturalists, the still-extant "Leopoldina" in Halle. "Wedel stood midway between medieval and modern world views, defending astrology and alchemy and championing iatro … [Click Below for Full Description]

William Leybourn
London : Awnsham Churchill, 1682 A good copy of the 1st edition in later full leather binding with frontispiece and 23 full page plates, of which 10 are folding. Leybourn's first work on Dialing was published in 1669; it's popularity (particularly given the use of sun-dials and astrolabes by the navy at that time) led to this expanded folio version, funded by subscription. William Leybourn was a leading practical mathematician and authored a number of works on surveying, Gunter's Line and measuring tables. This copy has been rebound fairly recently in a full pigskin binding with raised bands and title and author labels. New endpapers have been added, and the frontispiece relaid and repaired (there was loss to the side edge and a little damage to the portrait). Contents with title page; To the Reader 3pp; Contents of the Tractates [the work is arranged in 11 sections or Tractates] 4pp; errata 1p; Introduction 12pp; text with plates, tables and diagrams 330 pp; finis; final blank. The pagination is erratic but the text is continuous. P119/120 is missing and has been replaced by a facsimile. There is some crinkling and loss to page edges, particularly at the beginning and areas of browning/spotting. The plate at p295 has been relaid - with some loss to the bottom margin. There is occasional ink annotation and highlighting. Please ask for more images to fully assess condition.
