Dalton Michael
Assigns of Richard Atkins, 1682. The leather has peeled back from the boards on the edges but the binding is holding together. There is damage insect and staining to the endpapers and top corner of most of the book but it lessens as you go through the book. Pages 195-198 are loose. The paper itself is in good condition with expected toning and some foxing. 8vo 834 - 934 tall 564 index pages In spite of the rough condition of the book it is an interesting look at the legal system in England in the 17th century. In the back of the book labeled 34Table34 is an index to a wide variety of legal issues covered by the book. The book was originally published in 1623 and this is the fourth edition which has been corrected and updated.

First complete English edition of the Dutch philosopher, jurist, and theologian's legal masterpiece, De Jure Belli ac Pacis Libri Tres, first published in Paris in 1625. Considered to be the first expression of the "droit naturel", the first theorisation of "just war", and the foundation of modern international law, it had a profound influence on eighteenth-century political theorists such as Locke as well as on the arguments which supported the Glorious Revolution and the American Revolution. In his treatise Grotius puts forth his definitions of war and natural law (Book I), then argues for the identification of three just causes for war (Book II), and finally examines whether war and its combatants are bound by rules (Book III). "The questions which he put forward have come to be the basis of the ultimate view of law and society … [Click Below for Full Description]

We offer an etching by the Flemish artist Valentin Lefevre [Lefebvre]. The plate is 10" x 15 1/8" and printed on handmade laid paper that is 10 1/2" x 15 3/4". Lettered within image, in lower left "Titian in." "V. lefebre del. sculp." in the lower middle margin and "J. Van Campen Formis Venetÿs." at the lower right. After Domenico Campagnola (formerly attributed to Titian). Published in 1682 by by Jacobus van Campen in Venice, one of a series of fifty-three from the 'Opera Selectiora'. It is a hypnotically detailed landscape with a bearded man playing a hurdy-gurdy in the central foreground as a young woman grasps his shoulder. Curators note from the British Museum: "This is a copy in reverse after a woodcut by Domenico Campagnola of which a preparatory drawing exists in the Louvre, although the design was traditionally attributed to Titian." Valentin Lefebre (1637 - 1677) was a painter and etcher born in Brussels. He settled in Venice where he produced the 'Opera Selectiora' of etchings after Titian, Veronese, and Campagnola. The series was left unfinished at his early death, and finally published in 1682 by Jacques van Campen. Condition: The paper has been trimmed to approximately 1/4" around the platemark. There are four vertical creases across the image, the most prominent fold is at the left margin. On verso there is a 4" strip of adhesive tape at the top margin in the middle and hinging residue at all four corners. There is a very light damp stain in the sky area, otherwise in good condition.

ZAOROWSKI (Jérôme) ].
A Cologne, chez Jean le Blanc, 1682. - Petit in-12. 2ff. 184pp. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Prestel, Maria Katharina (geb. Höll 1747 Nürnberg ? London 1794)
Ettling, Frankfurt a.M. (Nr. 11). Literatur: Nagler 46; Le Blanc 48.
