JUVENALIS & PERSIUS.
Leiden, By Johannes vander Linde, 1682. 12mo. (XII),288 p., frontispiece. Vellum 14 cm The first complete translation of Juvenal into Dutch (Ref: Geerebaert 114,7; OiN. 237) (Details: 5 thongs laced through the joints. Engraved frontispiece, depicting an allegorical scene: a masked satyr, and a jester, between them a gigantic soap bubble with drinking, singing, dancing, music making people caught inside) (Condition: Vellum soiled & worn, especially at the extremes. A bookplate has been pasted on the front pastedown. Front hinge cracking. Rear pastedown worn) (Note: The Roman poet Juvenalis, ca. 55-140 AD, was the last and most influential of the Roman satirists. He 'uses names and examples from the past as protective covers for his exposés of contemporary vice and folly'. His main theme is the dissolution of the social fabric. (The Classical Tradition, Cambr. Mass., 2010, p. 501) The satires of the stoic poet Aulus Persius Flaccus form one libellus of 6 satires, together 650 hexameters. 'They are well described as Horatian diatribes transformed by Stoic rhetoric'. 'He wrote in a bizarre mixture of cryptic allusions, brash colloquialisms, and forced imagery. (OCD, 2nd ed. p. 805) § The dates of the translator Abraham Valentijn are unknown. He was living in the Dutch town of Dordrecht, at least since 1666, where he first was praeceptor (teacher of classical languages) of the local Schola Latina, and later Conrector. He published prose translations of Ovid and of Juvenal, which had some success, for both were reprinted several times. (Van der Aa 19,24) His translation of Juven … [Click Below for Full Description]

April 1757 in Göttingen auch Johann Jacob Schmauß) war deutscher Jurist, Historiker und Hochschullehrer. Nach dem Besuch der Gymnasien in Durlach und Stuttgart, studiert Schmauß zunächst ab 1707 in Straßburg und anschließend an der Universität in Halle. Dort stand er vor allem unter dem Einfluss der Gelehrten Christian Thomasius und Nikolaus Hieronymus Gundling. 1712 habilitiert sich Schmauß in Halle, wodurch er Vorlesungen im Bereich Geschichte halten konnte. Zu dieser Zeit begann Schmauß regelmäßig Schriften herauszugeben. Ohne seine literarische Tätigkeiten einzuschränken, trat er 1721 in die Dienste des Markgrafen von Baden-Durlach, zuerst als Hofrat, dann 1728 als Geheimer Kammerrat, außerdem übernahm er für den Bischof von Straßburg dessen Amtsgeschäfte im Heiligen Römischen Reich. Am 29. April 1734 wird Schmauß professio historiarum et juris naturae et gentium in Göttingen, auf Betreiben von Gerlach Adolph von Münchhausen übertragen, der ihn aufgrund seiner Beliebtheit in aristokratischen Kreisen und seiner bei Gundling genossenen Lehre, an die Universität Göttingen binden wollte. Muret, Pierre; Felix, Marcus Minicius;
London, England: R. Royston, 1682. First English editions? 1683 and 1682, respectively. Two volumes in one, each with separate title page. The "Rites of Funeral" is a translation, by Paul Lorrain, of "Les ceremonies funebres de toutes les nations" by Pierre Muret, an early study of funerary rites and customs, and first published in French in 1675. The second part, also translated by Paul Lorrain, is titled: "Marcus Minucius Felix, His Octavius; or, A Vindication of Christianity against Paganism." Presumed contemporary full leather binding of brown calf. The spine and boards much rubbed and dessicated. The second of four spine compartments with a reddish-brown leather label, with gilt-stamped lettering and ornamentation. Boards present but completely detached. Text block remains intact. 6 x 4 inches. With [xii] + 308 + [xvi] + 128 numbered pages. Front and back FEPs loosening. Front FEP with a few small ink marks. A bit of age-darkening throughout, especially at the preliminaries. Else a clean copy. Downgraded to Good Minus chiefly on account of the poor state of the binding. Certainly worthy of custom rebinding. Dedication section of the Rites of Funeral, dated November 6, 1682, is to Samuel Pepys, already much admired and esteemed. The colophon page of A Vindication states, "The translator of this book teaches the French tongue according to an exact and easie method. He is to be heard of at Mrs. Gate's house in Bow-Lane over against Basing-Lane-end, London." Pierre Muret was born at Cannes, in 1630. He became a distinguished member of the Order of Predicatores. The second part, also translated by Paul Lorrain, is titled: "Marcus Minucius Felix, His Octavius; or, A Vindication of Christianity against Paganism." Text block remains intact. He died in … [Click Below for Full Description]

"In addition to the importance of her work in terms of female scientific endeavors, she has by some been seen as a proto-feminist. In her introduction Meurdrac outlines her inner struggle between the contemporary female ideal, which Meurdrac described as to be silent, listen and learn, without displaying [...] knowledge. However she decides that it would be a sin against Charity to hide the knowledge that God has given me, which may be of benefit to the world" (fonte: wikipedia).
