MAIMBOURG, LOUIS
Paris: Sebastien Mabre-Cramoisy, 1682. Due volumi. [20], 545, [2]; [9], 487, [2] pagine. 26x20 cm.Rilegatura moderna in piena pergamena con alcune piccole macchie. Lievi bruniture e sporadiche macchioline e fioriture. [Click Below for Full Description]

NALSON, John (1638?-86)
London : Printed for S. Mearne, T. Dring, B. Tooke, T. Sawbridge, and C. Mearne. 1682-83. Folio, 2 vols, v.1. engr. front., [8], lxxix, [1], 817, [17] pp : v.2. engr. front., [8], xii pp, engr. port., 920, [22] pp, early inscription "Jos. Greedy his Book" on first leaf, later bookplate of "Grant of Litchborough" on pastedown of v.1., cont. calf, lacking labels on spines, somewhat worn but joints sound. An extensive and important chronicle of the beginning of the Civil War, regretably never continued past the beginning of 1642. Nalson, a royalist, set out to produce an antidote to Rushworth's Collections which he saw as blackening the memory of Charles I. Consequently he acquired the patronage of Charles II and was allowed free access to the various repositories of state papers. He seems to have taken many of these documents away with him and after his death a very valuable collection of papers was disposed of by his family. Some portions are now in the Bodleian and the British Library.

Gilbert Burnett and Anthony Horneck
Richard Chiswell 1682 - (2), 12p. Karl Johann Königsmark (1659¿1686) "fought in action at Tangier and on his return to England he was favoured by the king and was enough of a gallant at this time to attempt a liaison with and even proffer marriage to Lady Elizabeth Percy, styled countess of Ogle (1667¿1722). She was heir to the inheritance of the earls of Northumberland and had been widowed for the first time when not quite fourteen. She was seduced by the count's charms, but Königsmark was considered a very unsuitable match for the heir to one of the great estates of England and so her guardians rebuffed him. Instead she was given to the wealthy Thomas Thynne of Longleat, which angered Königsmark, although the marriage was never consummated and Elizabeth soon absconded to the Netherlands. While Königsmark hoped for an annulment of the marriage, Thynne, anxious to retain Elizabeth's property, sought legal redress and the return of his wife. Königsmark, still feeling the insult of the marriage, planned his vengeance against Thynne. He sent a number of challenges to Thynne through his retainer Captain Christopher Vratz (d. 1682), army officer and murderer, a professional soldier of German origin who had previously served as a mercenary in many of Europe's armies. It was later claimed that Thomas Thynne ignored the many challenges sent by the count and had hired men to kill Königsmark and Vratz. An attack apparently took place, but failed and left Vratz wounded. Soon afterwards Vratz recruited Lieutenant John Stern (1640/41¿1682), army officer and murderer, to his design.Vratz … [Click Below for Full Description]

SWAMMERDAM, J.
Small-4to. pp. (8), 215, (1), with woodcut title-vignette, 1 folded table and 13 (10 folded) engraved plates. 18th century marbled boards. Hagen II, 209; Horn & Schenkling 21794; Nissen ZBI, 4054. First French edition; the original Dutch edition was published in 1669, entitled 'Historia Insectorum generalis'. "Swammerdam's thesis about insects was fundamentally new and significant. For his contemporaries, as for Aristotle, there existed three good arguments, that not only placed the insects far from the higher animals, but even tended to remove them from the realm of subjects open to scientific study. These arguments were: insects lack internal anatomy; they originate by spontaneous generation; and they develop by metamorphosis. Swammerdam believed that all three arguments were false and devoted a wide variety of investigations to refute these ideas" (D.S.B. XIII, pp. 168-175). Old stamp on verso of title.

NEEFF, Adriaan de.
Van der Haar, Schatkamer, N 85; cf. Van Rijn 501. Popular schoolbook by a schoolteacher at Middelburg, teaching children arithmetic at the hand of the numbers quoted in the Bible. All the numbers of biblical amounts of money, measures or weights, were taught to be converted into contemporary Dutch amounts of money, measures or weights. At the end of the present work the Heidelberg catechism is added, with the questions and answers put to rhyme to facilitate the learning by heart for the younger children. Few slight stains, old owner's entry in ink in all woodcut escutcheons, but erased in the first one. Binding slightly soiled. Good copy.
