Bossuet wrote a book, it and the pastor was not long before answering. When Marie de Duras, she renounced his faith and converted to the Catholic Church. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. SAUNDERS, John.
Jeffares, "John Saunders 1682-p. 1758", in: Dictionary of pastellists before 1800 (online ed.). A pastel portrait drawn by the prolific itinerant portraitist John Saunders (1682-ca.1758) at Peterborough in September 1739. Saunders is recorded as active in East Anglia, the Midlands and elsewhere in the mid-18th century. The sitter John Sturges appears in Turkish costume, wearing a white turban with blue feather and a coat with gold trimmings and a fur collar. Saunders probably based it on a 1733 mezzotint drawn and engraved by Francis Kyte (d. 1744) after a painting (or the ink-wash drawing noted below?) by John Vanderbank (1694-1739). The pastel is of interest as an example of mid-18th century depiction of Turkish costume. With a paper label on the back with a manuscript note repeating information from the autograph pencil inscription by Saunders on the front, top right: "Saunders pinxit after Mr. J[oh]n Vanderbank Peterborough Sept. anno d. 1739". Two negligible scratches to surface, otherwise in good condition.

VIANEN, Jan van (1660-after 1726, engraver)
London: "Chez L'Amoureaux" [circa 1682]. 8vo (140 x 95 mm). Engraved throughout. Engraved title, sonnet in French, frontispiece, sonnet in Dutch, 44 engraved plates by Jan van Vianen, each facing text in Latin, Italian, French and Dutch, each printed on one side only. Early 18th-century vellum. Provenance: C.J.M. Kauscol (inscription on flyleaf); William Charles Smith (bookplate, 1882 gift inscription from "F.R.S."). Although the imprint is given as London (Londre), this edition appears to predate that of Ayres of 1683, as Landwehr claims. The engravings are much more finely executed, with greater detail. At least five editions were issued between 1683 and 1714 in London by Philip Ayres. These were based on the love emblems of Crispyn de Passe, Otto Vaenius, Heinsius, and Thronus Cupidinus. The Dutch artist Jan van Vianen went to England in his youth and, according to Praz, reworked his plates (in the reverse) from the originals, adding better perspective than in the originals. Landwehr, Emblem and fable books, 216; Praz, pp. 127-131 & 323; De Vries, Emblemata 232 & p. 43. Plate 20 and text 21 mounted back-to-back, some pale browning, vellum somewhat soiled.

Engraved frontispiece portrait laid down. Head margin of title page repaired, with pen notation over the repair. A bit of creasing, foxing and soiling to title page. Negligible foxing to contents. Minor rubbing to covers, but nonetheless a handsome, well preserved copy of an important biography. ~FFF~ Sir Matthew Hale (1609 - 1676) was an influential English barrister, judge and lawyer. Hale is almost universally appreciated as an excellent judge and jurist, with his central legacy coming through his written work, published after his death. His 'Historia Placitorum Coronae,' dealing with capital offences against the Crown, is considered 'of the highest authority,' while his 'Analysis of the Common Law' is noted as the first published history of English law and a strong influence on William Blackstone's Commentaries on the Laws of England. Hale's jurisprudence struck a middle-ground between Edward Coke's 'appeal to reason' and John Selden's 'appeal to contract,' while refuting elements of Thomas Hobbes's theory of nat … [Click Below for Full Description]

Nicolas de Larmessin
Brussels, 1682. RUSSELL
1682 - in a neat hand, leaving to his wife Anne (née Duke) lands in Elmore and Barnwood, Glos., for life, and then to their unmarried only daughter, "it is my strict order" that any renewals of leases are to be at his wife's charge but in their daughter's name, the daughter is to get immediately "my Toft and piece of Ground . in Little Distaff Lane" with the buildings on it, and "all my share in the good ship the Blessing & her Cargo now on a voyage to Guinea" which she is not to sell "till Mr. Thomas Deane my kinsman doth . part with his share or the Proprietor[s] do make dividend or put her to sale", also to his wife the £1000 secured by a bond to his father-in-law on their marriage, to be found partly from selling a lease from the Bishop of Chichester "of three houses in Whites Alley near Chancery Lane", this in lieu of "her right to the third part of my Estate which perhaps she may otherwise claim by a Custom of the City of London", with the probate, 4 sides folio and 2 sides blank, London, 18th May - 5th August browned but very clear, blank margin of first side mended with old paper, guard strip on blank sixth side Russell asks, if he dies in London, to be buried at St. Mildred, Bread Street, which is across Cannon Street along from Little Distaff Lane. The street was renamed Distaff Lane when the main line of the latter was absorbed by the widening of Cannon Street. The Bishop of Chichester for long rented his mansion on the west side of Chancery Lane to Lincoln's Inn, selling them the freehold in 1580. 'Chichester Rents' in Chancery Lane is also now part of the Inn.
