Memoires of the life and death of Sir Edmondbury Godfrey, late justice of the peace for Middlesex, who was barbarously murthered by the papists, upon the first discovery of the horrid plot: together with a full account of the strange discovery of the murt

London, printed for John Hancock & Enoch Prosser 1682.. Sm. 8vo, small engraved portrait by Van Hove (cut round & mounted), [8], 150 pp., advt leaf, early marginalia in brown ink, slightly browned & foxed, later morocco. Wing T3227. Only edition, scarce. The body of a wool merchant, Sir Edmund Berry Godfrey (1621-1678), was found in a ditch on Primrose Hill in 1678. He was certainly murdered, and the murder was probably in some way connected with his having taken the deposition of Titus Oates on the alleged Popish plot, but the mystery has never been cleared up. Primrose Hill was then known as Greenberry Hill; and one of the oddities of the case is that the three men charged with his murder were called Green, Berry and Hill (round up the usual suspects?). This is the most important contemporary source; it concludes with two poems. This copy is annotated in a contemporary hand on the title and elsewhere by someone very interested - perhaps in some way involved? - in the case. ESTC calls for a portrait, but I am not certain that the one here is not a replacement. vf21

Letzteres m. Riss (2 cm), innen etwas fleckig. Barbier I, 553 (2. Aufl.). Amsterdam, 1682 circa.

Arts advancement, or The most exact, lineal, swift, short, and easy method of short hand-writing hitherto extent, is now (after a view of all others, and above twenty years practice) built on a new foundation, & raised to a higher degree of perfection tha

London, printed for the author 1682.. engr. throughout (signed 'Ben: Rhodes sculpsit' on title), 24 leaves (all numbered except for f.l: portrait) printed on one side & arranged as 12 openings, very nice copy in orig. sheep ('Price bound 1s. 6d.' on title), some abrasion but joints perfect. Wi ng M941A; Alston VIII, 146. First edition, first state (?) of Mason's second shorthand book. The two states differ in the imprint, which here reads: "Neare the Royal Exchange. Where the books are to be had, & such as desire to learn. may (by him) be expediciously taught, at very reasonable rates; the booke is also sold by these book-sellers. Mr. Benj. Alsop at the Angel & Bible in the Poultry. Mr. Wilkins at ye Starr in Cheap side. Mr. Ben: Harris under ye Royall Exch: Mr. Thom Fox in Westminster Hall: and severall others". The second (?) state substitutes Jacob Sampson for Benjamin Harris.Such a change is common enough with moveable type, where it is easy, but here the title has been completely re-engraved. This needs good cause and I suggest that it was Benjamin Harris rather than Jacob Sampson who had to drop out of the enterprise: he was constantly in trouble with the authorities and at this time was in deep, fined the huge sum of £500 and put in the pillory for publishing his Protestant Petition, April 30, 1681. He continued his business in England ("an uneasie place for honest men", said his friend John Dunton) until his difficulties led him to move to Boston in 1686 - where he both became the first American journalist and published the New England Primer. This may be supported by the extreme rarity of this state. ESTC online locates only at Univ. of London (sc. W.J.Carlton's copy). Carlton himself (Bibl.Pepysiana IV, 80) knows also Sir Isaac Pitman's. Pitman bequeathed his books to [what is now] the University of Bath; the archivist kindly reports to me that this is a poor copy, discarded from Birmingham Free Library, extensively repaired & lacking the frontispiece - not a copy Sir Isaac would have bought if he had had a choice. No second edition is extant. If I have got the story right there may never have been one: the Harris state was briefly available in 1682, the Sampson state until the stock was exhausted; when the "third edition" was printed in 1687 the publishers reckoned that these had been two different editions. 21vf

        L'ambassadeur et ses fonctions.

Par monsieur de Wicquefort. 1-2. The Hague, Maurice Georg Veneur, 1682. 4:o. (4),+ 658,+ (58); (4),+ 308,+ (15) pp. Spotting throughout and a few minor dampsstains. Worn contemporary full calf, with gilt spine, tears at head and tail. Second edition of this important study of diplomatics, printed in several editions and translations. First published in The Hague in 1680-81. The Dutchman Abraham de Wicquefort (1606-1682), who wrote "L'ambassadeur et ses Fonctions" in prison, is the first author whose focus was more on actual diplomatic practise. "The purpose of this work was to describe what an envoy does and how he should conduct himself. He was on the threshold of a new development and gave the literature on diplomacy a new orientation". Wicquefort was from 1642 Brandenburg diplomat in Paris, but was imprisoned by Cardinal Mazarin in 1659 and in 1660 expelled. He then stayed in Hague, but was in 1679 imprisoned for life for high treason. Beside this book and a history of the Netherlands, he also translated the travels by Olearius into French
