Amsterdam, Jan Rieuwertsz., 1682. 4to. pp. (40), 656, (20), with engraved frontispiece and 40 engraved plates. Contemporary vellum. Second edition, first published in 1672. Abraham Munting (1626-1683) was the son of Hendrik Munting, who had founded in 1642 a botanical garden situated within the fortification circuit of Groningen known as the 'Paradise of Groningen', with its hothouses and forcing frames. It was famous throughout Europe and a place of horticultural pilgrimage. His son, Abraham, director of the garden from 1658, greatly enlarged the garden. The 'Waare oeffening der Planten' describes to a large extend trees and plants of the garden. The work was expanded to a folio format adding new text and plates and appeared in Dutch 'Naaukeurige Beschryving der Aardgewassen' in 1696 and Latin 'Phytographia curiosa' 1702. Our copy seems to lack the last leaf. The Register is complete but there is a small supplementary register 'Register Eeniger vernaamste Gedenkweerdigheden', which should have one more leaf. However of the above edition we have 2 copies both lacking this last leaf. The present copy is most likely an early issue.//Provenance: Signature on free endpaper 'Amico M. Slakman, Hugo de Vries Dec. 1932'//Hunt 363; Nissen BBI, 1430; Paradisus Batavus, 40.

Marriage settlement relating to Thomas Gunstone of the parish of St. Georges, Barbados, planter, and his wife Ursula

13 May, , 1682. The settlement between Gunstone and Major Rowland Bulkeley, Captain John Cousins, Richard Forde and Henry Byrch, all of Barbados. Folio (475 × 325 mm). Three conjoined pieces of paper, including "A List or Schedule of all and every ye Negro-Slaves, Horses, Cattle & Stock, Coppers, Stills & Materialls belonging to ye Plantacion of Capt. Thomas Gunstone..." Slightly browned, some creases from old folds, a number of minor professional repairs to small splits, negligible loss, some staining along the folds, seal tags truncated, about very good. Barbados was first settled by the English in 1627. By 1638 it was a tobacco plantation economy, in depression because of over-production in Virginia and the West Indies. Soon after sugar production commenced it was boosted by rising sugar prices in Europe caused by dislocation in Portuguese Brazil, which had up till then been the major source. By the early 1650s Barbados could be described as the richest spot in the New World, and had left Hispaniola behind as the sugar centre of the Caribbean. This "Sugar Revolution" in Barbados and the Leeward Islands led to major changes in economic organization. Sugar production needed land both for growing cane and for the associated industrial works, mills, boiling-houses etc., so there was a move towards large plantation units, and the heavy, severe labour needs greatly accelerated the slave trade. In 1645 Barbados had less than 6,000 slaves and in 1698, 42,000. The census of property owners in Barbados compiled in 1679 shows that in the parish of St. George, the parish of Thomas Gunstone, there were 29 landowners with over 100 acres. Of these, 8 had no servants and averaged 59 slaves each, the other 21 averaged 5 servants and 77 slaves, so, with 58 slaves excluding children, and 3 indentured servants, this was probably one of the smallest plantations with servants. The Schedule details the coppers and stills of the processing plant, as also the domestic possessions - "three feather beds with bedsteads, 24 cane chairs, 2 cedar tables..." - and livestock - "20 Turkeys, 6 Ducks, 12 Dunghill ffowles" - attached to the plantation, together with a list of the slaves with their names, "27 Men Negroes; 31 Women Negroes; 10 Negroe Boyes; 9 Negroe Girls." The provision in the deed for the purchase of five able-bodied slaves each year is a grim reminder of the appalling rate of attrition amongst the slave population. It agrees with the statement of Edward Littleton in 1689 that a master of 100 slaves needed to buy 6 new ones each year. Approximately 131,000 Africans were carried to Barbados 1640-1700, but, as cited above, not very many more than 40,000 were alive in 1698. A fascinating document relating to the coming to prominence of Barbados as the centre of the British sugar trade.

Utrecht, G. de Walcheren, 1682. Small-4to. pp. (8), 215, (1), with woodcut title-vignette, 1 folded table and 13 (10 folded) engraved plates. Contemporary boards, spine with 2 red gilt lettered labels. Hagen II, 209; Horn & Schenkling 21794; Nissen ZBI, 4054. First French edition; the original Dutch edition was published in 1669, entitled 'Historia Insectorum generalis'. "Swammerdam's thesis about insects was fundamentally new and significant. For his contemporaries, as for Aristotle, there existed three good arguments, that not only placed the insects far from the higher animals, but even tended to remove them from the realm of subjects open to scientific study. These arguments were: insects lack internal anatomy; they originate by spontaneous generation; and they develop by metamorphosis. Swammerdam believed that all three arguments were false and devoted a wide variety of investigations to refute these ideas" (D.S.B. XIII, pp. 168-175). One leaf with 2 small tears.         A serious expostulation with that party in Scotland, commonly known by the name of Whigs: Wherein is [.] plainly laid open the inconsistency of their practices: I. With the safety of humane Society: II. With the nature of the Christian religion: III. Their two covenants are historically related, and prov'd to be no sufficient warrant for what the do: IV. Their new doctrine of pretended forfecture, is prov'd to be groundless

Printed by J[ohn] D[arby] for Richard Chiswell, London 1682 - Small quarto. Collation: A-H4 (final verso blank), COMPLETE. Pagination: 63, [1] pp. Disbound; evidently removed long ago from another volume as there is a small 19th-century printed booklabel on upper left corner of title-page ("1047"). Unobtrusive blind-stamp of the now-defunct Theological Institute of Connecticut on first and least leaves. Preserved in a fine protective case FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. Ours is apparently the only copy on the market. A rare tract condemning Scottish resistance theory, in which the author, an Episcopalian cleric, complains that the Scots had been "unhappily brought into such a corruption of morals as has not been hitherto known among Christians [.] Are not assassinations taught, as well as practis'd amoung us?" (p. 4). Craufurd echoes the distinction stridently made by Thomas Hobbes in 'Leviathan' who had insisted that "Law, and Right, differ as much as Obligation and Liberty." (SOURCE: Clare Jackson, "Restoration Scotland, 1660-1690: royalist politics, religion and ideas" p. 62).         EL ARTAMENES, Ó EL GRAN CYRO.

Trad. Nicolás Carnero. Imp. Real: Mateo de Llanos. Madrid, 1682 - . 20,5 cm. [18] 429 pág., 3 h. (sign.

// 2 volumes bound in 1 quarto (257 x 197 mm), speckled brown calf, spine tooled in gilt raised on five bands, dentelle on turns-in, sprinkled edges (contemporary binding). Illustrated with numerous engraved medals. "This edition would be the first, interesting because the office containing each described medal is noted down, and also the gold and silver posthumous were forgotten in the second edition of Paris." (Jacob, tome II, p. 151). Vaillant brought back from his travels a great amount of precious coins that made the "Cabinet du Roi" the first medals' collection of Europe. Ink handwritten ex-libris on first end-paper and title. (spine'extremeties used, with some lack of leather, rubbings on hinges and turns-in, light spots).

SADUCISMUS TRIUMPHATUS: OR, FULL AND PLAIN EVIDENCE CONCERNING WITCHES AND APPARITIONS. IN TWO PARTS. THE FIRST TREATING OF THEIR POSSIBILITY. THE SECOND OF THEIR REAL EXISTENCE

London: Printed by Tho. Newcomb, for S. Lownds..., 1682.. [18],52,[12],162,[6],78,blank leaf,[14],273,[1],67,[3],5-45,[17],24,[2]pp. with engraved frontis to each part, engraved plate at p. 23 of final part, and errata. Modern three quarter calf and marbled boards, gilt labels, to style. Tiny isolated wormhole in lower blank margin of text block, modest occasional tanning and a few isolated minor rust marks, otherwise a very good copy. A properly, and neatly, deaccessioned institutional duplicate, with tiny release stamp on verso of title and in blank portion of 3E2. One of two variants of this work denoted the "second edition," in this case conforming to ESTC R233939. Although the register is continuous, there are variations in the pagination of the constituent elements, as well in the imprint, distinguishing the two variants. Glanvill (1636-1680), who at an early age distinguished himself with THE VANITY OF DOGMATIZING (1661), was keenly interested in the phenomenon associated with witchcraft, and in 1667, published his initial work, PHILOSOPHICAL CONSIDERATIONS TOUCHING WITCHES AND WITCHCRAFT. Through subsequent expanded editions, under various titles, it grew from that 62pp. pamphlet to become one of the most widely known works on witchcraft of its times. The first edition of this title appeared in 1681, and this second edition (in both variants) is enhanced by additional prefatory matter, as well as added sections by Antony Horneck and Henry More. "Glanvill was a voluminous author. His style is often admirable, not unfrequently recalling that of Sir Thomas Browne. His intellect was versatile, active, and sympathetic, but he is rather rhetorical than logical. In his dislike to the scholastic philosophy he followed Bacon and the founders of the Royal Society. Though he was in this direction a thorough-going sceptic, he was opposed to the materialism of Hobbes. His defence of witchcraft was the natural result of an attempt to find an empirical ground for a belief in the supernatural, and he formed with Henry More a virtual association for ‘psychical research'" - DNB. This work exerted some influence on Mather, and on various witch frenzies during subsequent decades; its continuing fashionability can be measured, in a way, by its occasional occurrence among the real and imaginary texts cited by H.P. Lovecraft in his works. ESTC R233939. WING G823. CORNELL WITCHCRAFT 239. KEYNES (BIBLIOTHECA) 2353.

Titlepage browned/dusty with old name Joh: Wetherby to margin, corners rounded, margins bit chipped, 2nd title with another name blank verso of previous page, marginal paper repair to dedication page not touching print, other signs of use and a few pages at the beginning and end have marginal damp marks. Several inscriptions on blanks facing later titlepages inc. ownership poem dated Dublin 1795. *Glanvill wrote several books on occult matters the most famous being "Saducismus Triumphatus .. evidence concerning Witches and Apparitions". Here he defends belief in the prior existence of souls and thus reincarnation, also tied in with belief in ghosts, but as a sceptic he seeks empirical proof. His views and Dr. Rust's are then defended in Henry More's Annotations, all 3 thus virtually forming an early society of psychical research.

He was a close friend of John Locke. John Locke, who was one of Boyle?s literary executors, arranged for the publication and saw the book through the press. It contains some of John Locke?s weather records and the ?Advertsisement to the Reader? on pp.iii-vis by Locke. During his stay in Oxford Locke had kept a journal of the air from June 24th 1666 to June 30th 1683. This journal was transmitted to Boyle and was included in the General History and is found on pp.104-132 A Register kept by Mr Locke in Oxford as well as London between December 1669 to June 1665.         An Accurate Map of the West Indies. Drawn from the Best Authorities, Assisted by the Most Approved Modern Maps and Charts, and Regulated by Astronomical Observations

      - This handsome map covers the southeastern United States, eastern Mexico, Central America, the West Indies, and the northern part of South America. It is derived from Popple's important map of the region. The British colonies in North America are confined east of the Appalachians with France in control of Louisiana. Many early forts and Indian tribal territories are located. There are several interesting notations concerning the history of the region, such as a notation concerning the southern boundary of the Province of Carolina, "so that Fort St. Augustin as well as Georgia falls within these limits." Trade winds and sea routes are marked throughout, including the course of the Spanish gold fleet from Old Spain and the return trip from Cartagena and Vera Cruz. The title cartouche is adorned with Native Americans and an incongruous lion (likely representing the British colonies).Sharp impression and fine original color. Ref: Sellers & Van Ee #1682.

        Symbola heroica.

Amsterdam, apud Jansson-Vaesberge & H. Wetsten, 1682 - 4to. (8)pp + pp v - lxxx + 480pp + (32)pp. Engraved title-page by Corn. Galle after Peter Paul Rubens, frontispiece portrait of Cardinal Aloysius Carafa, 8 plates of arms and genealogies, 268 emblematic devices within scrollwork surround, 13 engraved figures in text, ornamental woodcut head- and tail-pieces and historiated initials. Bound in 19th century red morocco, spine richly gilt and inner dentelles, edges gilt (by R. Petit); joints and corners lightly rubbed. A collection of 264 emblems and devices formed by the Roman-born Jesuit. The work is divided into 9 books, depicting pictorial shields and devices with their mottoes, giving explanation of the symbolism. Heraldic badges of noble families and men of learning include the Medici, Gonzaga and Orsini. Illustrated are the significance of devices on coins and medals, ring inscriptions, seals and their uses, and forms of epigraphy; the author also explains methods of cryptic writing and numerology, the meaning and origin of emblematic images from myth, legend, nature and objects of everyday life, these often juxtaposed to provide a parable or exemplary interpretation. Of special interest is the device on page 146 which shows the magnetic clock of Father Francis Linus - the earliest recorded attempt to measure time by this means (see Physis 1969, p69). The frontispiece was engraved by Galle after a design by Rubens (now in the Institut Neerlandais, Paris; Collection Frits Lugt); the emblems were drawn by Andre Pauwels. The book was first published by Plantin in 1634; this is a re-issue of the original sheets with a new title-page added. A very good copy; a paper fault in blank margin of one leaf. Praz pp179, 455; Judson & Van de Velde, 'Corpus Rubenianum Ludwig Burchard: Book Illustrations and Title-pages', I, p289; Funck, 'Le livre belge a gravures', p379; Olschki, Choix, I, 353 (this copy - with bookseller's ticket inside frontcover).
