The Security of English-Mens Lives, Or the Trust, Power, And Duty of.

1682 - A Landmark Work on Grand Juries [Somers, John Somers, Baron (1651-1716), Attributed]. The Security of English-Mens Lives, Or the Trust, Power, And Duty of the Grand Jurys of England. Explained According to the Fundamentals of the English Government, And the Declarations of the Same Made in Parliament by Many Statutes. Published for the Prevention of Popish Designs Against the Lives of Many Protestant Lords and Commoners, Who Stand Firm to the Religion and Ancient Government of England. London: Printed for Benj. Alsop, 1682. 168 pp. Octavo (6" x 3-3/4"). Recent calf, blind rules to boards, raised bands and gilt title to spine. Moderate toning to text, negligible faint dampstaining to rear quarter of text, faint dampspotting to a few leaves, internally clean. * Second edition. This influential pamphlet defined a hearing before grand jury of peers as a fundamental English right. An assertion of the priority of the law over the English crown, it was written to support the right of a grand jury to reject the bill of indictment against Anthony Ashley-Cooper, First Earl of Shaftesbury, issued by Charles II (a Catholic). Published anonymously, this work is attributed in most sources to Somers. A barrister of the Middle Temple and an important Whig statesman, he was Lord Chancellor of England during the reigns of William and Mary and Queen Anne and presided over the framing of the Bill of Rights (1689). As one would suspect, this book was studied by the American founding fathers. Sweet & Maxwell, A Legal Bibliography of the British Commonwealth 1:378 (34). English Short-Title Catalogue R10363.       London: Printed by J[ohn] D[arby] for Richard Chiswell, 1682. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. Small quarto. Collation: A-H4 (final verso blank), COMPLETE. Pagination: 63, [1] pp. Disbound; evidently removed long ago from another volume as there is a small 19th-century printed booklabel on upper left corner of title-page ("1047"). Unobtrusive blind-stamp of the now-defunct Theological Institute of Connecticut on first and least leaves. Preserved in a fine protective case. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. Ours is apparently the only copy on the market. A rare tract condemning Scottish resistance theory, in which the author, an Episcopalian cleric, complains that the Scots had been "unhappily brought into such a corruption of morals as has not been hitherto known among Christians [...] Are not assassinations taught, as well as practis'd amoung us?" (p. 4). Craufurd echoes the distinction stridently made by Thomas Hobbes in 'Leviathan' who had insisted that "Law, and Right, differ as much as Obligation and Liberty." (SOURCE: Clare Jackson, "Restoration Scotland, 1660-1690: royalist politics, religion and ideas" p. 62). Craufurd, of Camlard, Dalmellington, was Historiographer Royal of Scotland at the time of Charles II. REFERENCES: Wing (2nd ed.) C6865. Halkett & Laing (2nd ed.) v. 5, p. 227. Contemporary full black morocco, covers tooled in gilt to a cottage roof design with onlays of citron and red morocco, a.e.g., with visible fore-edge painting of flowers. 8vo. An English restoration binding by the Oxford binder Roger Bartlett, with a visible painted fore-edge.         Original 41-page Manuscript dated April 17, 1682

1682. hardcover. very good. Bound in the original 24mo sheepskin notebook (edge-worn but sound). The middle 10 pages are additional manuscript notes of William Appleton dated April 18, 1731. The last 12 pages are manuscript notes of Mr. Stone of Hartford dated February 14, 1788 (lacks the last leaf of Mr. Stone's notes). Very good condition. William Brattle was a Congregational minister. After graduating from Harvard College in 1680, he became a tutor there. From 1696 to 1700, Brattle was a Fellow of the Harvard Corporation. Previously he helped to administer Harvard College during the four years President Increase Mather was in England. In the manuscript William Brattle lists 18 ethical questions on points of marriage, law, abortion, and religion. Each question is written again, with seven additional questions, all followed by extensive answers. The format suggests that it was used by Brattle as lecture notes in a course he was teaching. William Brattle's brother, Thomas, graduated from Harvard College in 1676 and served as treasurer of the College from 1693 to 1713. The notes by William Appleton refer to his religious views. The last section by Mr. Stone is religious in nature and may have been notes for a sermon.

Floating above, a small circle with arms encloses eyes depicted within a double pyramid. The second engraved title depicts a nude man, possibly Adam, holding a small round lettered shield with one hand and a torch in the other. The torch, held upside down, is setting fire to stars above a half-globe within which the sun and moon shine over a goat and sheep. Winged cherub's faces and a crown float above a pyramid illustrated with a cross at its center. Yet another crown floats above the man's head. Each engraved title is followed by a leaf of text explaining the figures/symbols in the plates. Additionally illustrated with two title vignettes, tail pieces and woodcut initials. There are occasional marginal annotations penned in a small early hand. There are minor stains to the edges of a few leaves and there is some occasional minor foxing and a few page corners and edges are creased. Very good. Boehme considered "Von der Genaden-Wahl" as his greatest work. The second work "Betrachtung goettlicher Offenbahrung...." is in the form of 177 theosophical questions about Adam, God and the origin. One of the titles from the collection of works entitled "Des Gottseeligen Hoch-Erleuchteten Jacob Boehmens Teutonici Philosophi Alle Theosophische Wercken." - ["German Baroque Literature" by Curt von Faber du Faur, #116]."The edition was published by Johann Georg Gichtel, with the help of others, from the manuscripts collected by Abraham Willemszoom van Beyerland, the purpose having been to produce a critical text of all Boehme's works. The printing was probably done by the firm of de Blaeu in Amsterdam. The important engraved titles and the copperplates which illustrate the text were possibly engraved by Jan Luyken after sketches by Franckenberg. The works were issued in such a form that they could be sold separately...." [Faber du Faur #116].According to Faber du Faur, Jacob Boehme (1575-1624) was the "son of a peasant in Lausitz and a cobbler by trade, possessed a powerful imagination greater than that of any German of his century, but he was no poet. He was rather a philosopher (although devoid of any education or training), and a very daring one, even more so than Leibniz who marked the end of this period...." Although his education was informal, he was familiar with the ideas of many of the great minds and philosophers of the ages, such as Paracelsus, as well as those of Sebastian Franck, Valentin Weigel, Kaspar von Schwenckfeld and, of course, with the Bible. "His thinking is indeed very independent" states Faber du Faur, "although he often uses the terminology of Paracelsus. To Boehme the world is 'God's signature,' a signature being the outward mark of the hidden virtues of things. What is new in his thinking is that he perceives in God's world not only love but also malice.... Boehme's influence upon his contemporary world was exercised primarily through a circle of Silesian noblemen who were followers of Schwenckfeld and were led by Abraham von Franckenberg. It was through him that Daniel von Czepko and Johann Scheffler were inspired to have their own visions, and Quirin Kuhlmann owes his principal ideas mainly to Boehme, although Kuhlmann later developed them quite independently."

      E. Michallet, Paris 1682 - 12mo. [viii], 368 (ie, 364; a printer’s error with page numbers 121-124 skipped), [4] pp. Complete with register, advertisements and errata. With 1 full page and numerous text illustrations. Contemporary full calf, gilt spine in compartments, binding a bit worn; contemporary signatures crossed out in ink on title, faint annotations, small strip of paper covering someone’s signature on top edge of title, signature of L. Besset (?) on front free endpaper and the bookkplate of J. Mouchet, S.D. on the paste-down. First edition of this valuable seventeenth century optical treatise, of major significance to the history of optics because it established the outline of a wave theory of light nearly eight years in advance of Huygens’s Traite de la lumiere. Divided into three books, the first presents a wave theory of light based upon a manuscript written by the Jesuit scientist Ignace Gaston Pardies (1636-1673) but left unpublished at his death, a work that Huygens also read. In this, Ango’s presentation of Pardies’ theories of optics, he states that the speed of light is slower in a denser environment, an idea which was opposed to the then-established principles set forth by Descartes in 1637. An illustration shows waves reflecting off of curved mirrors. The second and third books describe the principles of vision and of colour, the means of correcting defective sight with glasses, as well as a variety of optical instruments. The author treats earlier works by Alhazen and Witelo, but supports Descartes’ and Kepler’s view of the function of the eye in which the lens produces an image of the world focused on the retina. Ango also includes the mathematics of optics, specifically discussing how lenses can be used to correct both near- and far-sightedness as well as presbyopia.Ango (1640-1694) was a French Jesuit and professor of mathematics at Rouen. The only other work for which he is known was a 1679 book on fortification. [Attributes: First Edition]

[And:] [3] New Experiments Physico-Mechanical, touching the Spring of the Air, and its effects, made, for the most part, in a new pneumatical engine...

London: Printed by Miles Flesher for Richard Davis, Bookseller in Oxford, .. [1] FIRST EDITION. After the Spring and Weight of the Air, Boyle continued to devise experiments on air. In this first continuation, he describes the second English air-pump, constructed like the first by himself and Robert Hooke. He investigated sound, magnetic force and frictional heat in a vacuum; he also confirmed the results of Pascal's famous experiment on the Puy-de-Dôme. Wing B3934. Fulton 16. [2] FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH (from the Latin). The first description of the double air-pump, the third air-pump in England, devised and constructed by Denis Papin, who had brought it with him from France. It had the great advantage of two barrels so arranged that, as the air became exhausted, the resistance offered to the ascent of one piston was nearly balanced by the force with which it compelled the other to descend. It is clear from this book that Boyle and Papin worked together for almost four years. Wing B3935. Fulton 18. [3] Third edition of Boyle's book on his original experiments on air, his first scientific work and the one on which his fame rests. This edition, like the second, includes his controversial tracts against Linus and Hobbes, the former provoking an attack to which Boyle wrote a defence that contained "Boyle's law", first published in the second edition. Wing B4000. Fulton 15. See Horblit 15, PMM 143, and the Norman catalogue 300 for the second edition. Neville I, p. 192, has the same combination of works as are present here.3 works in 2 volumes (the third in 3 parts), 4to, 11 leaves, pp. 198, (10), 1 leaf (longitudinal title), 8 engraved plates; pp (xx), 198, (5), 5 folding plates; pp. (xvi), 204, (xii), 118, (2) blank, (viii), 102, (2), 2 engraved plates (1 folding). Titles of [2] and [3] within rules. Part 3 of [3] misbound at the beginning, small wormhole in lower margin of first part of [1], short (2 cm.) wormtrack in first few leaves of [3] diminishing to a single wormhole, last plate of [2] just shaved at sides. Contemporary panelled calf, foot of one spine and one corner worn, upper joints cracking at foot, one small hole in leather owing to zealous use of a blind tool, a nice set. Ettling, Frankfurt a.M. (Nr. 11). Literatur: Nagler 46; Le Blanc 48..
