DE WIT, Frederick.
Amsterdam, c.1680. Original colour. 465 x 555mm. A very fine example of one of the most decorative maps of Crete, based on the map by Sébastian de Pontault Beaulieu, a French military engineer who had mapped the fortifications of many Mediterranean islands. His map of Crete was published in 1674, only five years after Crete had fallen to the Turks after a 24-year siege. The seas around the island are filled with galleons & galleys representing this epic struggle. Above the map the title is on a banner held aloft by putti, and the corners have plans of the fortfications of Canea and Candia. Under the map are four more plans, and around the whole is an engraved frame-like border. ZACHARAKIS: 2392.

LEIGH, Edward.
London: William Whitwood, 1680. Octavo (142 x 93 mm). Contemporary unlettered sheep, double blind-stamped rule border to sides, flat spine ruled in blind. Spine ends and corners a little worn, a little light spotting and browning; a very good copy in an attractive contemporary binding. Woodcut initials in text. Ownership inscription of Thomas Bayly to front free endpaper, with his purchase price at head of title, and engraved armorial bookplate to front pastedown, modern bookplate to rear pastedown. A re-issue, with cancel title-page, of the edition published in 1671 under the title Three Diatribes or discourses, of travel, of monay, and of measuring distance betwixt place and palce, continuously paginated, but each part with its own printed title dated 1671. In his note "To the Candid Reader", the former Member of Parliament Edward Leigh refers to earlier travellers who had written accounts, with mention of several Arabist scholars including Golius, Erpenius, and Pocock. His survey of coinage includes the observation that gold and silver are not necessarily of interest to all: "Mony, commonly, is the mean for all commodities, and answereth to all. Yet the Spaniards coming into the West-Indies, had many commodities of the country which they needed, brought unto them by the inhabitants; to whom, when they offered them money, goodly pieces of gold coyn, the Indians taking the mony, would put it into their mouths, and spit it out to the Spaniards again, signifying, that they could not eat it, or make use of it; and therefore would not part with their commodities for mony, unle … [Click Below for Full Description]

Frederick de WIT (1630 - 1706)
A highly decorative, large sea chart of the East Coast of Africa with Madagascar, the Arabian Peninsula, and the Malabar Coast of India. This was an important region as it depicts an area heavily contested among the Portuguese, Dutch, English, and other European powers, and with its Arab settlements that were in this area from earliest times. This sea chart was first published in De Wit's Orbis Maritmus ofte Zee Atlas of 1675 and appeared in later editions as well. De Wit's sea charts from his Zee Atlas are sought after for their geographical content as well as their attractive cartouches and vignettes. A large, elaborate title cartouche dominates the bottom of the chart. This cartouche shows animals: lions, water Buffalo, snakes, and other animals. Across the top of the cartouche are numerous Arabs, one on horseback. Several sea battles are als … [Click Below for Full Description]

A beautiful example of Frederick de Wit's c. 1680 map of Tartary. The map covers from just north of the Arctic Circle to Formosa south to the the Bay of Bengal and Formosa, and from the Caspian Sea to Hokkaido or Yedso. Although parts of China, Japan, and northern India were somewhat mapped, most of northeastern Asia was fully unknown to western cartographers. The continent has here been given a curious rounded form that may be suggestive of a northeasterly route to Asia. Both the Great Wall of China and the Gobi Desert are clearly delineated. At the western edge of the map the overlarge Caspain Sea is erroneously mapped on an east-west rather than north-south axis. This map was published both independently and as part of various complied and composite atlases. Copperplate, very good condition.

Frederick de WIT (1630 - 1706)
Bellissimo esemplare in coloritura coeva. A nice map of the islands of Sardinia and Corsica. The coastal information is fairly accurate but much of the interior topography is less precise. The title cartouche features the arms of the Kingdoms of Sardinia and Corsica with their characteristic symbols for the defeated Moors who had once ruled the islands. Original color, good conditions.
Molto decorativa. Decorative map of Italy, Sicily, Corsica and Sardinia, published by Frederick De Wit in Amsteradam, the first time in 1680, and reprinted several times The present example - with the notice of De Wit's privilege, which was granted on October 27, 1689 - is a final state of the map, dating about 1720. The map includes a detailed cartouche, numerous sailing ships and a naval battle of the Gulf of Naples. R. Borri "L'Italia nelle antiche carte..." (2011), scheda 149

Map published for the first time in the Atlas Major, 1680 circa. It is decorated with cartouches depicting views and plans of Messina, Palermo, Catania and Trapani, and a plan of Messina erroneously called Milazzo. Due to the great outcome, the map was reissued in the first years of 1700 by Covens and Mortier and by the Ottens. The quality of the colour and the paper make us presume it was published by Ottens, around 1730. Copper engraving, in excellent codnition. L. Dufour - A. ALLARD (Hugo ou Huych) -- ALGERIE.
Amsterdam, vers 1680. 425 x 503 mm. Oxford. The Theatre. 1680. 2 volumes folio 18x12 inches, handsomely bound in full period red morocco, some wear and minor restoration. Two engraved titles- one a general title and one to the New Testament. Text illustrated as follows - 124 double page plates mostly by Visscher, 5 double page maps including a WORLD MAP plus a plan of Jerusalem, plus an additional title by Piscatore Theatrum Passionis. The maps are by Jacob Savry and the world map appears to be a second issue by Savry of the Visscher world map. Condition- mostly good but some plates split in the fold without loss and an occasional crease. Two plates with additional period printed margins. Occasional marginal spotting- mostly to the endpapers. These plates are usually found in Ogilby's illustrated issue of J. Field folio Bible of 1660 published in Cambridge. In 1659 John Field, the printer to the University of Cambridge, published a handsome large folio edition of the King James version of the Bible. Seeing an opportunity for improvement, much of the edition was purchased by the bookseller and publisher John Ogilby. Ogilby added to the Bible numerous engravings and in select copies further augmented the edition with sets of engravings purchased from the Amsterdam publisher Nicholas Visscher. The plates are mostly by Cornelis Visscher, after Rubens, de Vos, de Bruyn, Pieter Potter and others. This is a version of the Bible published in Oxford with these plates. The collation and number of plates vary greatly from copy to copy - thus sold as described. The bookplate of Samuel Gurney a famous Norfolk banking fami … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sumptibus Claudii Bourgeat, & Mich. Lietard, 1680.1659., Lugduni. 2 volúmenes. 2ff. ROGEL, Hans the elder.
1680. Sixth known copy of Johann Jacob Schönig's edition of a stunningly decorative Augsburg writing master's woodcut copybook, devoted primarily to decorated gothic capitals (versals), printed in the period 1680-1694 from the original woodblocks of the first edition of 1568. Hans Rogel the elder (1532-1592), writing master, school teacher, poet, wood-block cutter, engraver, printer and publisher at Augsburg cut the woodblocks and probably executed the lettering himself. All the lettering examples and the title-page are printed from large, richly calligraphic woodcuts with their lettering in white on black. Nine of the ten examples display versals (the missing leaf supplied in reproduction), including complete alphabets in three sizes. The final leaf displays alphabets of textura capitals, textura minuscules and roman capitals. As early as 1779 Paul von Stetten described Rogel's Capital und Versal Buech as "besonders fein geschnitten" and said that if Rogel executed the lettering himself he "ist er billig den zierlichsten Schreibmeistern beyzuzählen". He thought it good enough to be the work of Caspar Brinner (1565-1610), the greatest Augsburg writing master of the second half of the century, apparently not knowing Brinner was only about three years old in 1568.All editions should apparently contain 11 leaves, but many contain only 10 and some fewer. Some have also been bound with additional leaves that do not belong to the edition. There appear to be only 3 complete copies of the present edition. An early owner skilfully wrote out alphabets in the fore-edge margins of 2 lea … [Click Below for Full Description]

Baxter, Richard.
London: Printed by B[ennet] Griffin, for Thomas Simmons at the Princes Arms, 1680. 4to (22 cm, 8.12''). [44], 136, 177–296, 313–400, 409–488 pp. An anti-Catholic , Puritan overview of Christianity's origins intended for those who "cannot read many and great Volumes" and those who "would know the truth about the great Heresies which have divided the Christian World," among other readers suggested by the title-page. Baxter (1615–91), author of the classic devotional work The Saints' Everlasting Rest, was a prominent — and much-persecuted — Nonconformist minister and => "Hater of false History"; thus the present account opens with a discussion of how to assess the credibility of histories and reports. 1680 marked this work's first edition, with its title-page recorded in three variant states noting the same printer but differing booksellers (the text and its setting otherwise identical). As seen in other copies, everything from chapter VII onwards has been printed in a slightly different typeface using different manicules; also, there are several places where the pagination and signatures skip widely, although the text continues uninterrupted. Provenance & Evidence of Readership: Front pastedown with bookplate of the Library of the Theological Seminary of the Diocese of Ohio (properly deaccessioned). Intermittent 17th-century inked marginalia cross-referencing pages, adding significant information, and correcting certain points. ESTC R10655; Wing (rev. ed.) B1224B. Nuremberg: In Verlegung Wolffgang Moritz Endter, und Johann Andre Endter, 1680. Nuremberg: In Verlegung Wolffgang Moritz Endter, und Johann Andreæ Endter, 1680. FIRST EDITION. With dramatic illustrations that include rain showers of rats, ark-worthy floods, and large wagons of hay borne aloft by the wind, this is a huge compendium of extreme weather events and other bizarre natural phenomena by German polymath Erasmus Finx [usually latinized to Francisci]. Best remembered as a writer of Christian hymns, Finx (1627-94) worked as a reader and corrector for the Nuremberg publishing house of Endter, also penning a number of books, many under pseudonyms, for his employer on topics ranging from ghosts and goblins to religious reflections to the Indies and China. Both the New World and the Far East are mentioned in the present work: he describes Indian rain ceremonies and Chinese "weather makers" and "wind devils," the latter depicted as a man flying through the air on an enormous bird while reading a scroll. Perhaps the most mysterious event reported is what seems to be a UFO sighting: a 1665 battle between "ships" in the sky above Stralsund, Germany. At one point, a flat, round object "the color of a darkening moon" descended from above to hover over the church of St. Nicolai, terrifying the townspeople below. Many of these witnesses fell ill in the following days, "with trembling all over and pain in head and limbs." Doctors and scholars were puzzled. This is not a common work: OCLC finds six copies in US libraries; ABPC and RBH locate just two at auction since 1975.. 210 x … [Click Below for Full Description]

KORTHOLT, Christian
First edition. 8vo. (156x88mm). pp. 8ll, 312. The pagination is confusing as the final gathering is numbered 287-294, following the penultimate gathering which ends with page 304. However, all the signatures are present and the book collates correctly. Text in Latin. Contemporary vellum, five raised bands, lettered in ink. All edges sprinkled red. The front endpaper has an earlier catalogue entry pasted in. There is browning and foxing to much of the text block as is usual with German books of this period. There is a tear to leaf 3 of the preface with slight loss of a few letters. Otherwise, this is an excellent copy of the rare first edition of Kortholt's critique of philosophical materialism.
