BERRY, William (1669-1708).
London: William Berry, 1680. 2 sheets joined, float mounted and framed (22 2/8 x 34 2/8 inches to the neat line). A fine engraved double-hemisphere map of the world with fine original hand-colour in outline, the title boldly printed along the upper edge and with the dedication to Charles II and imprint in a fine cartouche lower centre (one or two discreet marginal repairs). THE ENGLISH SANSON A fine world map showing all but the eastern coast of Australia, the eastern coast of New Zealand. William Berry's "A Mapp of all the World..." is a copy of " the Sanson world map as published by Hubert Jaillot in 1674. Berry has patriotically marked the islands discovered by Drake just off Tierra del Fuego and has added New Albion in the northern part of California, shown as an island ... Berry advertised his two-sheet world map in the "Term Catalogues" for June 1680 and then in the "London Gazette". It was available either in sheet form or to be 'bound in books or pasted on cloath at reasonable rates" (Shirley). Chubb describes Berry as a bookseller, geographer, and engraver, who was active between about 1670 and 1703. His most enduring partnership was with map-maker Robert Morden, and together they dealt in topographical works, prints, maps, charts and globes. Berry corrected and amended a set of maps of the World, described by Nicolas Sanson as here, which were issued separately between 1680 and 1689 "as a collection they are known as the English Sanson" and are very rare" (Chubb). Very few English mapmakers made a name for themselves in the 16th and 17th centur … [Click Below for Full Description]

Satterthwayt, a soldier and one of the King's guards, was committed to the Marshalsea on the evidence of one Margaret Clark, for setting fire to the house of Peter Delanoy a dyer of Southwark a fact which, he writes, has already been "made publick to the world, by our infallible, unerring, Protestant News-monger." IN CHRISTI NOMINE. AMEN
Bononiae, Typis Iosephi Longhi 1680. In 4° cartonato rustico moderno.

Nice early map of Utrecht province, oriented west at the top. VG condition, original colouring (including cartouche); some professionally repaired tears on folds. Koeman Wit 25.

Matthaus Merian
Mathias Merian the Elder (1593-1650) was one of the most prominent members of the leading print publishing family of 17th-century Germany, known throughout Europe for his engravings of cityscapes and landscapes, his scientific books, and his editions of the noted series of travel books, the “Great Voyages.” Born and trained in Basel , Switzerland, in the early 1600’s he began studying drawing, engraving and etching in Zurich with engraver Friedrich Meyer. He rapidly and almost single-handedly built up the house to become one of the most important in Europe, etching most of the plates himself until about 1645, when he increasingly relied upon the help of a growing staff of assistants and pupils, among them Wenceslaus Hollar, Rudolf and Conrad Meyer of Zurich, and his sons Matthaus and Casper. “Topographia Germaniae” was published around 1680 in partnership with Zeiller Martin who wrote the text. “Topographia Germaniae” was one of the larges and most comprehensive publishing’s of its time with engravings of major European cities and historically important locations, each expertly engraved by Merian and his sons. In total, Topographia Germaniae is comprised of 30 volumes with more than 2,000 individually detailed engravings with maps and views of cities, towns, castles, fortresses and monasteries.
