Boyle, Robert
- Fünfte lateinische. - Geneve, Samuel de Tournes, 1680, 4°, 6 Bl., 148 pp., Halbpergamenteinband. Boyle's best-known work 'The sceptical chymist' is a diatribe against the chemistry of his day, which held that a few 'elements' - wether the Aristotelian earth, air, fire and water, or the Paracelsean salt, sulfur and mercury - where necessary components of all bodies, and that all chemical changes could be understood in terms of these 'elements'. Boyle complained that the often obscure and enigmatical language of the alchemists and Paracelsans arose from an imperfect comprehension of the nature of an element, and gave a clear definition of 'element' as it was understood in his day (despite some claims to the contrary, Boyle did not give the modern definition of the term here). - He also described his corpuscular chemistry, based on the theory that all matter was composed of particles or clusters of particles in motion; this theory further contradicted the notion of an element as a body incapable of decomposition. - His oft-quoted definition of an element rus as follows: - 'And, to prevent mistakes, I must advertize to You, that I now mean by Elements . certain Primitive and simple, or perfectly unmingeld bodies, which not being made of any other bodies, or of one another, are the Ingredients of which all those call'd perfectly mixt Bodies are immediately compounded, and into which the are ultimately resolved: now whether there by any one such body to be constantly met with in all, and each, of those that are said to be Elemented bodies, is the thing I now question'. - Bolyes … [Click Below for Full Description]
