[Click Below for Full Description]

Newton, Isaac, English mathematician, physicist, astronomer, theologian, and author (1642-1727)
no place, late 1670s or, 1680. 4 pages. 4to (8 x 6 in.; 204 x 154 mm) on an uncut sheet of paper (watermarked posthorn hg | mc) folded to quarto, final 4 pages unwritten and unopened, 38 lines to a full page, with a few deletions and emendations, written in Latin. A collection of alchemical quotations copied from a wide variety of carefully identified printed sources, demonstrative of Newton?s careful reading.  Many quotations are from Michael Maier?s Septimana philosophica  published in Frankfurt in 1620, of which Newton owned a copy (Harrison 1046), although its whereabouts are not known. Maier?s Symbola aureae mensae duoodecim nationum,  Frankfurt, 1617 is also quoted (Newton?s copy is now in Jerusalem=Harrison 1048).  There is also one reference to his Hieroglyphica.  Michael Maier (1566-1622) was a physician at the court of Rudolph II, who after Rudolf?s death in 1612 left Prague for Britain, where he published numerous books to support the truth of alchemy and hermetic philosophy, at a time when charlatans (as satirized by Ben Jonson in The Alchemist) abounded. Many of his works are illustrated with fine engravings. One has the impression that these sententiae have been carefully composed. The very first is a quotation from Turba philosophorum (possibly cited from the edition in Artis auriferae  of 1610), bolstered, as it were, by a quotation definitely taken from volume IV of Theatrum chemicum  (pp. 902 & 903) from the text Lilium tanquam de spinis erutum. The paragraph on page 3 beginning ?Infantis philosophici parentes et nutrix (gold, silver & mercury [symbols])? … [Click Below for Full Description]

Zuiderzee antieke zeekaart - Van Keulen, na 1680
[Click Below for Full Description]

1680. Beautifully engraved map shows the Volga River in two parts based on the travels of Adam Olearius. The left side of the map charts the river between Nazhniy Novgorod and Saratov, the right side continues to Astrachan. The rivers mouth on the Caspian Sea is shown in a large and detailed inset. Adam Olearius was a German scholar, mathematician, geographer and librarian. He was sent in 1633 by Duke Frederick III to Moscow and Persia to seek treaties favoring the newly-founded city of Friedrichstadt as the terminus for an overland silk road. The party traveled from Hamburg to Moscow via Lubeck, Riga, Dorpat, Revel, Narva, Ladoga and Novgorod. A favorable treaty was struck with Michael Romanov in 1635. Later that year Olearius returned to Moscow and then on to Persia via the Volga and the Caspian Sea. After an arduous journey he meet the shah in August 1637, but negotiations were not successful. On the return trip, Olearius left his party at Revel heading directly for Lubeck. He mapped the Volga along the way, bringing this knowledge to Europe. 18 x 21.25

Map of Crete - Frederick de Wit, c. 1680
1680. MAP OF CRETE "Insula Candia Ejusque Fortificatio. "Copper engraving by Frederick de Wit, published in Amsterdam c. 1680, with original hand colouring. Size: 46 x 54,5 cm. One of the most decorative maps of Crete, based on the map by SÃ bastian de Pontault Beaulieu, a French military engineer who had mapped the fortifications of many Mediterranean islands. His map of Crete was published in 1674, only five years after Crete had fallen to the Ottomans after a 21-year siege (the longest siege in history). The Siege of Candia [modern Heraklion], the capital of Crete, was the central event of the sixth Turkish-Venetian War, better known as Cretan War, or War of Candia. It was a conflict between the Republic of Venice and her allies (the Knights of Malta, the Papal States, French volunteers, and pirates from Mani) against the Ottoman Empire and the Barbary States, fought over the Venetian possession of Crete. The war lasted from 1645 to 1669, and was fought in Dalmatia, Crete, and in numerous naval engagements in the Aegean Sea. On the map the seas around the island are filled with galleons and galleys representing this epic struggle. Above the map the title is on a banner held aloft by putti, and the corners have plans of the towns and fortifications of Chania and Heraklion. Under the map are plans of the fortifications of Spinalonga, Rethymno, Tylissos [Thine] and Suda. Price: Euro1.450,- Â Â

ALLAIS, Jean Baptiste.
, . . First edition of a very elaborate basic writing course and copy book, minutely explaining the composition of the various calligraphic hands (françoises, bâtardes, financieres), as well as pen decorations and drawings. The engraved title-page reads, "L'art d'écrire ou Le moyen d'exceler en cet art sans maistre" (suggesting a break with the ancient tradition of learning by apprenticeship or under a school master). The writing examples include numerous exercises of single letters and many alphabets. It also includes illustrations of posture at the writing table, the way to hold the pen and nibs with the angle of cutting and of the nib to the paper. Instructions are often added as well, engraved in a small neat hand, and attention is given to the lay-out of a manuscript. The course was designed by Jean Baptiste Allais, dit le Beaulieu, and engraved by Louis Senault, who was a leading writing master in his own right and therefore ideally suited to engrave his colleague's writing book. At this date the pointed pen was replacing the broad-nibbed pen, and one of the illustrations present here shows the nib of a pointed pen with the split tip spread open. Some copies were issued with only 4 letterpress leaves (quire A) and many copies are missing letterpress leaves or plates. With several calligraphic exercises by owners on the endpapers, one with "Fait par moy René Brisson", another "fait par moy Bernard le Brot[?] ... a Paris" and a calligraphic title signed "Guerbois fils".Lacking the leaf on cutting the pen (which included no wri … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tartary, China, Japan - De Wit, 1680
1680. "Magnae Tartariae Magni Mogolis Imperii Iaponiae et Chinae Nova Descriptio". Copper engraving published 1680 by Frederick de Wit in Amsterdam. Original hand colouring. Size: 44 x 55 cm. Map of Northeastern Asia, extending from the Island of Formosa, the Ganges and the eastern part of the Caspian Sea to Yedso, Tartaria, Siberia and Molgomzaia in Russian Asia in the North. No western exploration has yet reached Asia's northeast coast, and we see a conjectural rounded coastline. Plinius' Tazata Island appears north of the Arctic Circle, and a sense of Tartary's mountain ranges is given, but the topography is by no means accurate. There is geographical and historical commentary throughout Tartary. The Great Wall is shown pictorially, and many cities are named in China and northern India. The fictional Lake Chiang Mai is still shown as the source of the great rivers of Southeast Asia. Yedso (Hokkaido) is shown in a very limited way, with partial coastlines. A very interesting map, from a period when Europe's knowledge of China has greatly improved, but the depiction of northern and central Asia remains largely speculative. Decorated with finely engraved mountains and trees. Price E525,-

COLBERT, JEAN BAPTISTE, attributed To
France: 1680. [s.l.], n.d. (circa 1680) (Minutes of the Civil and Criminal Ordinances of 1667) 1052pp. manuscript pages on watermarked paper. French language. Folio, full calf. Comprising what appears to be a full manuscript of a final work on legal reform authored by Jean Baptise Colbert. It is separated into two parts, Civil and Criminal. The first page is a table that describes the work as containing "Des Titres de la nouvelle Ordonnance Civile de L'annee 1667" or the titles of the new civil laws for the year 1667 (1-709pp.) followed by "de Titres Conenua en cette Ordonnance pour le Matieres Criminelle" or criminal law (710-1052pp). Similar hand-writing samples provide no firm conclusion; likely in the hand of Colbert or possibly his scribe, Nicolas Joseph Foucault. Provenance: stamped "Bibliotheque Henri Rameau" on the front endpaper. (Henri Rameau Library) Jean-Baptiste Colbert (1619 - 1683) was a French politician who served as the Minister of Finances of France from 1665 to 1683 under the rule of King Louis XIV. His relentless hard work and thrift made him an esteemed minister. He achieved a reputation for his work of improving the state of French manufacturing and bringing the economy back from the brink of bankruptcy. Historians note that, despite Colbert's efforts, France actually became increasingly impoverished because of the King's excessive spending on w … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pasana, Manuel Felipe (Captain)
N.d. [c. 1680]. N.p. [Spain]. Folio, (308 x 220 mm). 8 pp. Unbound, entirely genuine and virtually perfect condition, untrimmed.- Seemingly unique memorial addressed to King Charles II by Captain Manuel Felipe Pasana regarding his position as agent of the Spanish Crown in the Portuguese city of Faro in charge of informing the Spanish authorities, including the consulate of Cadiz about the presence of enemy fleets and corsairs. This is the occasion for outlining the history of these incursions since the 1640’s to the date of the memorial. Pasana, who had informers who helped him in his task along the coast towards Spain, recounts episodes of Spanish losses at the hands of the English, French and Turkish corsairs. He recounts, for example, the case of a Galician ship obliged to take refuge in Faro because of the weather; a French corsair ship “Saint Joseph” captained by Monsieur Bullon, also anchored in the port, only had to follow the Galician ship when it departed to take as booty. The city of Faro was in a strategic position providing free entry not only to manu Spanish ships coming especially from America but also to ships of Spain;s enemies. This made it an ideal place to collect information about the numbers, armament and intentions of the latter thus protecting not only the American fleets coming but also all Spanish navigation from the northern Spanish coast of the Atlantic in route to the Mediterranean and vice-versa. Autograph signature of Pasana, addressing it to Don Juan Ximenez de Montalvo y Saravia, Alcalde de Corte de su Magestad … [Click Below for Full Description]

London, 1680. The Popish plot was as fabricated conspiracy theory that there was a plot to murder Charles II so that his Catholic brother James could inherit the throne. The issue was the focus of a frenzy of pamphleteering and popular anxiety, as the above shows, and multiple attempts to enact laws to prevent a Catholic from becoming monarch, which failed. Major players included Thomas Dangerfield, a career criminal who claimed he had been asked to assassinate the King by Lady Powess; Elizabeth Cellier, a prominent Catholic midwife who advocated for imprisoned Catholics and was accused of conspiracy by Dangerfield after she withheld charity from him; Roger Earl of Castlemaine, a Catholic who was accused of high treason but won acquittal after serving as his own advocate in court; a number of other accusers who jumped the bandwagon for fame and fortune, and so on. A collection of folio pamphlets concerning the Popish plot and exclusion crisis, as follows: Popish Damnable Plot against our religion and liberties fairly laid open and discovered in the Breviats of threescore and four letters and papers of intelligence past. London: printed for R. Janeway, 1680, pp. [2], 31, [1], lacking the blank preliminary; text sometimes attributed to Ezerel Tonge. COKE, Edward
London: the assignees of Richard and Edward Atkins, 1680. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. The Magna Carta is one of the most notable and important legal documents written throughout the history of England. Ultimately, the document expressly forbade the imprisonment of freemen without trial. English jurists and legal writers have used the Magna Carta as a basis for many treatises, essays, and reports for centuries. One such author was 16th-century barrister Edward Coke whose commentary has become some of the most important notes on English constitutional law. This 1680 printing of the Magna Carta was published in London by Richard and Edward Atkins with notes and commentary of both Edward Coke and Edward Cooke. [Attributes: First Edition]
