Burnet, Gilbert, 1643-1715
London, 1680. Printed by J.D. for Richard Chiswell, at the Rose and Crown in St. Paul's Church Yard, 1680. [3]f., 27 pages. Roth MAGNA, page 282, #39: pages iv, 27. 4to. London, 1680*. Page 25 with early ink correction of a typographical error. pp. (6), 27. Touch stained. Modern wrappers. Small 4to. Wing B-5772. The celebrated English divine Gilbert Burnet (1643 - 1715) wrote this account of a Jewish heiress from Holland who braved her mother's pleas and her former co-religionists' persecution to convert to Christianity. Not wishing to embrace the "idolatrous" Christianity (i.e. Roman Catholicism) that was practiced on the continent, she fled to England, where she was baptized as an Anglican by William Lloyd, Bishop of St. Asaph. Amsterdam: Jacob van Meurs,, 1680. behelsende de Gewesten van Mesopotamie, Babylonie, Assyrie, Anatolie, of Klein Asie: beneffens eene volkome Beschrijving van gansch Gellukigh, Woest, en Petreesch of Steenigh Arabie. 2 parts bound in 1, folio (317 x 194 mm). Contemporary vellum, title inked on spine, three-line blind tooled border on sides enclosing a large arabesque blind stamp, red speckled edges. Letterpress title printed in red and black; engraved pictorial title, 12 double-page engraved view (2 also folding), 3 double-page maps, 22 half-page plates. Bookplate of Heyse-Tak; front board has "sprung", 19th-century repair to fore edge of engraved title. An attractive copy in a contemporary binding. First edition of Dapper's Asia Minor and Mesopotamia; a German edition followed in 1681. In common with contemporaries such as John Ogilby, the Dutch physician Olfert Dapper (1639-1689) never travelled to visit the lands he wrote about, instead compiling extant translations and other eye-witness accounts to produce lavish and encyclopaedic books for the northern European readership. His and others work thus both reflected and directed growing public interest in distant places and foreign peoples. Dapper was meticulous in using hundreds of published sources and several unpublished ones for each of his books; he did not lift whole passages from one book, but often based a single paragraph on two or three different sources. In this sense his work is indispensible to modern scholarship, as it reflects manuscript sources that have since been lost. … [Click Below for Full Description]

[CHECKLEY, JOHN]
Printed by T. Fleet. First edition.. Aside from the obvious flaw, a very decent copy; trimmed a little close on a few leaves, but overall sound.. Evans 2510. Small 8vo, modern calf. Errata leaf following F4. Lacking the title-page. The title above is supplied solely from the very long half-title. One of several works by the controversial John Checkley (1680-1754), the clergyman, scholar and bookseller from New England, who Appletons' Cyclopedia describes as a ?man of eccentric and irascible conduct, but witty, learned in the classics . . . ? Inscribed on the verso of the half-title: ?Samuel Johnson?s Gift of / the Revd. Author / 1724.? This Samuel Johnson (1696-1772) was no doubt the American colonial minister to the Church of England (see the DAB), who very likely would have known Checkley.

KIRCHER, Athanasius, S.J. (1602-80). -
Amsterdam, Jan Waesberg, 1680.In - folio picc. Legatura della metà dell'800 in mezza pelle con angoli, dorso con titolo e fregi impr. in oro; lievi abrasioni. Antiporta allegorica inc. in rame, 10 illustrazioni inc. in rame e numerose inc. in legno n.t. (8, incl. l'antiporta), 248, (8) pp.; lieve uniforme arrossatura della carta. Prima edizione di questa raccolta di studi, esperimenti ed osservazioni compiuti dal noto erudito in vari campi delle scienze naturali. "This work, edited by one of Kircher's pupils, Johann Stephan Kestler, is a codification of Kircher's observations and experiments across the entire spectrum of his researches in physics. Naturally there are large sections in light and shadow, magnetism, acoustics, and music; but there are also experiments and observations in hydrolics, alchemy, and a myriad of other topics. This compendium was perhaps a response to entreaties from Kircher's fellow scientists, who appreciated his keen observations and experiments but did not care to wade through some 40 volumes to glean them. The book is an example of what Kircher's writings could have been like at the hands of a good editor. Kircher died the year the book was published, and it is uncertain to what extent he was involved in its publication. The Physiologia is not only a measure of Kircher's scientific curiosity and the vast range of his scientific researches, but also a barometer of his age, a catalogue of scientific concern of his time" (Merrill, Kircher, 29). Ovid; John Dryden
London : Printed for Jacob Tonson , 1680. - 1680 1st ed Epistles of OVID in English by John Dryden Mythology Trojan War Achilles EXTREMELY RARE 1st edition English / comp@$2,400 Publius Ovidius Naso (43 BC – AD 17/18), known as Ovid in the English-speaking world, was a Roman poet best known for the Metamorphoses, a 15-book continuous mythological narrative written in the meter of epic, and for collections of love poetry in elegiac couplets, especially the Amores (“Love Affairs”) and Ars Amatoria (“Art of Love”). His poetry was much imitated during Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, and greatly influenced Western art and literature. The Metamorphoses remains one of the most important sources of classical mythology. John Dryden (1631 – 1700) was an English poet, literary critic, translator, and playwright who was made Poet Laureate in 1668. He is seen as dominating the literary life of Restoration England to such a point that the period came to be known in literary circles as the Age of Dryden.
