MERCURIO, Girolamo
Venetia, Gio: Francesco Valvasense, 1680. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Girolamo Mercurio's 'La Commare o Raccoglitrice' is a rare and highly important 17th-century treatise on obstetrics gynecological medicine. It was initially written to instruct midwives on the care for child delivery and how to provide medical assistance through complications. Mercurio also instructs new parents on the care for infants, breast-feeding, dealing with post-partum struggles, as well as advice on dealing with stresses of pregnancy. Originally published in 1595, this work has long been one of the world's most popular and oft-referenced works on obstetrics, in large part because of the illustrations. These illustrations show the developmental stages of a fetus, reproductive organs, processes of childbirth, and even a view of conjoined twins!

COLBERT, JEAN BAPTISTE, attributed To
France: 1680. [s.l.], n.d. (circa 1680) (Minutes of the Civil and Criminal Ordinances of 1667) 1052pp. manuscript pages on watermarked paper. Folio, full calf. Comprising what appears to be a full manuscript of a final work on legal reform authored by Jean Baptise Colbert. It is separated into two parts, Civil and Criminal. The first page is a table that describes the work as containing "Des Titres de la nouvelle Ordonnance Civile de L'annee 1667" or the titles of the new civil laws for the year 1667 (1-709pp.) followed by "de Titres Conenua en cette Ordonnance pour le Matieres Criminelle" or criminal law (710-1052pp). Similar hand-writing samples provide no firm conclusion; likely in the hand of Colbert or possibly his scribe, Nicolas Joseph Foucault. Provenance: stamped "Bibliotheque Henri Rameau" on the front endpaper. (Henri Rameau Library) Jean-Baptiste Colbert (1619 - 1683) was a French politician who served as the Minister of Finances of France from 1665 to 1683 under the rule of King Louis XIV. His relentless hard work and thrift made him an esteemed minister. He achieved a reputation for his work of improving the state of French manufacturing and bringing the economy back from the brink of bankruptcy. Historians note that, despite Colbert's efforts, France actually became increasingly impoverished because of the King's excessive spending on wars. Colbert work … [Click Below for Full Description]

1680. A Bible of historical significance. This Bible is unique for two reasons. It is the first folio Bible printed at Oxford at the Theater and the third Oxford Bible ever printed. Secondly it is the largest English Bible ever printed since 1535, the year of the first complete English Bible. Everything is original . Both the general title page and the New Testament title page are outstanding(see pictures). The paper quality of the Old Testament and the Apocrypha is good. The New Testament has been used far more as was often the case in the 17th century and the paper quality is not as good as the first two parts of the Bible. There are some tears but not considerable loss. The leather covers and spine are original. There has been a little wood worming at the top of the spine but this has been treated. The Index at the end of the Bible is complete with very slight loss on the last page. This 1680 Oxford Bible is only the second English Bible to have dates in the margins, the first being the 1679 Oxford Bible. The binding is original and solid. Measurements are as follows: 430mm x 280mm x 100mm. This Bible has an important place in the history of the English Bible and would embellish any private collection.

London: Magna Charta, Made in the Ninth Year Of King Henry the Third, 1680. Shipped with USPS Media Mail. An early translation of Magna Carta. Magna Charta translated by Edward Cooke, Esq. London: Printed by the Assigness of Richard and Edward Atkins , Esquires, for Thomas Simmons, at the Princes and Capital Arms, in Lungate-Street 1680. 16cm. Bound in full sheep. Provides an English translation of Magna Carta, accompanied by interpretations of the document from Lord Chief Justice Edward Coke (1552-1634), from his Institutes of the Laws of England (1644). Barrister Sir Edward Cooke (c. 1650-c. 1705) sought to provide access to this foundational document to the many practitioners and common people who did not read Latin. The combination of a concise translation and a digest of Edward Coke made the work very popular especially among law students. The work remained a fundamental law book until it was superseded by William Blackstone's introduction to his addition of the charters in 1759. From a North American perspective, the work was even more important. Although Edward Coke's 4 volume Institutes was known and read, this slim volume was far more popular. As the colonies drafted their own charters, many included the liberties enumerated in Magna Carta. The work is quite rare because not many copies are in existence because it was heavily used. The University of Texas law school also has a copy of this work. This magnificent piece which is 5 3/4 x 7 1/2 is housed in a 8 3/4 x 10 1/2 shadow box frame. [Attributes: First Edition]

Beautiful map of the continent filled with details typical of the late 17th Century. The Nile appears according to the ancient pattern, arising from the two lakes of Zaire and Zafflan. Joseph de (del) Olmo
Roque Rico de Miranda and Francisco Sanchez, Madrid and Granada, 1680. 2 works bound together. Relacion Historica del Auto General de Fe Que se Celebro en Madrid Este Ano de 1680. 308 pages with armorial motifs of the Church and the kingdoms of castille and Aragon frontispiece and engraved title. Lacks the folding plate. 58 pages (1672). Small octavo (7 3/4" x 6") bound in period vellum with handwritten title to spine. (Palau 201026; no record of second work) First editions. The prime purpose of a trial and death sentence was not to save a heretic's soul, but to ensure the public good and to strike terror into the people. Sentences and abjurations must be read out publicly. For the inquisitors, t was not enough to get the heretic to admit that he had sinned and declare that he had repented. He must be made to do so in public, so that is served as a lesson to all the faithful. This was the object of the ceremony known as the auto de fe. In the course of an auto de fe nobody was executed; only after the ceremony were those sentenced to death handed over to royal justice and taken to the place of execution. Joseph del Olmo's account of what happened in Madrid was horrifying. The condemned were taken to a place of execution and attached to rings between posts, garroted and then set on fire. The texts contains descriptions of the defendants in these ecclesiastical suits and gives vivid and highly suggestive psychological portrait of historical efforts in repression.
Opera molto rara. Ex collezione F.H. (Lugt 3373) Etching, without date and signature. A magnificent impression, rich in tone, printed on contemporary laid paper without watermark, with wide margins, in good condition. Marco Sanmartino or Sammartino was a Neapolitan painter lived in the second half of the seventeenth century, according to Bartsch active around 1680. Malvasia mentions it under the name of Sanmarchi Venetian, almost certainly the artist's stay in Venice. DE WIT, Frederick.
Amsterdam, c.1680. Original colour. 465 x 555mm. A very fine example of one of the most decorative maps of Crete, based on the map by Sébastian de Pontault Beaulieu, a French military engineer who had mapped the fortifications of many Mediterranean islands. His map of Crete was published in 1674, only five years after Crete had fallen to the Turks after a 24-year siege. The seas around the island are filled with galleons & galleys representing this epic struggle. Above the map the title is on a banner held aloft by putti, and the corners have plans of the fortfications of Canea and Candia. Under the map are four more plans, and around the whole is an engraved frame-like border. ZACHARAKIS: 2392.

LEIGH, Edward.
London: William Whitwood, 1680. Octavo (142 x 93 mm). Contemporary unlettered sheep, double blind-stamped rule border to sides, flat spine ruled in blind. A re-issue, with cancel title-page, of the edition published in 1671 under the title Three Diatribes or discourses, of travel, of monay, and of measuring distance betwixt place and palce, continuously paginated, but each part with its own printed title dated 1671. In his note "To the Candid Reader", the former Member of Parliament Edward Leigh refers to earlier travellers who had written accounts, with mention of several Arabist scholars including Golius, Erpenius, and Pocock. His survey of coinage includes the observation that gold and silver are not necessarily of interest to all: "Mony, commonly, is the mean for all commodities, and answereth to all. Yet the Spaniards coming into the West-Indies, had many commodities of the country which they needed, brought unto them by the inhabitants; to whom, when they offered them money, goodly pieces of gold coyn, the Indians taking the mony, would put it into their mouths, and spit it out to the Spaniards again, signifying, that they could not eat it, or make use of it; and therefore would not part with their commodities for mony, unle … [Click Below for Full Description]

Frederick de WIT (1630 - 1706)
A highly decorative, large sea chart of the East Coast of Africa with Madagascar, the Arabian Peninsula, and the Malabar Coast of India. This was an important region as it depicts an area heavily contested among the Portuguese, Dutch, English, and other European powers, and with its Arab settlements that were in this area from earliest times. This sea chart was first published in De Wit's Orbis Maritmus ofte Zee Atlas of 1675 and appeared in later editions as well. De Wit's sea charts from his Zee Atlas are sought after for their geographical content as well as their attractive cartouches and vignettes. A large, elaborate title cartouche dominates the bottom of the chart. This cartouche shows animals: lions, water Buffalo, snakes, and other animals. Across the top of the cartouche are numerous Arabs, one on horseback. Several sea battles are als … [Click Below for Full Description]
