Van Dyk, C.
Amsterdam, Johannes van Hoorn, 1680. Small 8vo (15.1 x 9.4 cm). Engraved frontispiece, title page with engraved vignette; [viii] 286, [ii] pp., 20 finely engraved plates. Contemporary vellum. Script title on the spine. Edges speckled red.= Rare, well-preserved copy of this early, purely osteological work by the Dutch pharmacist Cornelius van Dyk. The book is divided in two parts: the first dealing with man, other mammals, and Reptilia (turtoise, snake); the second part with birds. Pagination is continuous, but plate numbering starts anew, however, a plate of an eagle belonging to the second part is numbered XII (last of first part), instead of I. Van Dyk and the famous Dutch engraver Jan Luyken signed most plates. OCLC records a total of less than 25 copies: in Dutch libraries (6), other European libraries (9), and North American libraries (7). We could not trace any auction record for this rare item. Old private owner's signature on the front pastedown, some light, marginal thumbing. A very good copy. Klaversma N. & K. Hannema, "Jan en Casper Luyken te boek gesteld", p. 168. Not in Nissen.

LIGORIO Pirrho
[Click Below for Full Description]

Opera molto rara. Ex collezione F.H. (Lugt 3373) Etching, without date and signature. A magnificent impression, rich in tone, printed on contemporary laid paper without watermark, with wide margins, in good condition. Marco Sanmartino or Sammartino was a Neapolitan painter lived in the second half of the seventeenth century, according to Bartsch active around 1680. Malvasia mentions it under the name of Sanmarchi Venetian, almost certainly the artist's stay in Venice. Sanmartino the painter known and appreciated especially landscapes with small figures, praised for their respect to … [Click Below for Full Description]

Beverland, Adrian.
1680. 8vo. (12), 223, (5) pp. With woodcut printer's device to t. p. Contemp. calf with giltstamped label to prettily gilt spine (slightly rubbed). Leading edges gilt; marbled endpapers. First edition; rare. "One of his learned obsceneties" (cf. Bilder-Lexikon). Beverland (1650-1716), one of the most colourful figures of late 17th-century scholarship, had to leave Leiden University after creating a scandal hit with his treatise on original sin ("Peccatum originale", 1778). He proceeded to "live in England and write many pieces of filthy poetry" (cf. Rosenkranz, Hdb. einer allg. Geschichte der Poesie II, 30). An English translation was published in 1905 as "The Law Concerning Draped Virginity: An Academical Study". None of his works was banned by the Church, a fact which Reusch (II, 862) interprets as a sign of the increasingly desultory character of Roman censorship in the 18th century. - Front hinge beginning to split, otherwise a very appealing copy from the library of Armand Jules de Rohan (1695-1762), Duke and Archbishop of Reims (and uncle of Cardinal Rohan, notorious for the so-called Affair of the Diamond Necklace), with his engr. armorial bookplate on front pastedown. Brunet I, 837. Ebert 2076. Bilder-Lexikon II, 126. Gay/Lemonnyer I, 819. Clément, Biblioth. curieuse III, 270.

Cubero Sebastian, Pedro.
1680. 4to. (20), 360 pp. With the title page within a border of cast fleurons, woodcut arms of the dedicatee Charles II of Spain, and several woodcut initials and tailpieces. Modern gilt blue morocco by the leading Barcelona binder Emilio Brugalla (1901-87), also active in Madrid, signed at the foot of the front turn-in: "Brugalla 1946", with the arms of the Spanish bibliophile Isidoro Fernandez (1878-1963) stamped in gold on front and back in a blind-stamped panel, double fillets on binding edges and richly gold-tooled turn-ins, gilt edges. First edition of an interesting and detailed account of the first overland journey from Spain to the East Indies (1671-80) made by the Spanish missionary Sebastian Pedro Cubero. Interestingly, Cubero covered most of his route by land, as would later Careri, thus constantly being able to observe the customs, religions, ceremonies and costumes of the peoples he visited, describing them in considerable detail. After spending time in Italy, where he was appointed as a missionary to Asia and the East Indies, Cubero travelled by way of Istanbul and Moscow to Iran, visiting Isfahan ("Hispaham") and Bandar Abbas, after which he finally arrived in India. After crossing to Malacca he was imprisoned by the Dutch and later banished from the city. He then proceeded to the Philippines and ultimately, by way of Mexico, back to Europe. "After a stint as confessor in the imperial army in Hungary, Cubero became one of the notable travellers of the seventeenth century. What set him apart was the variety of his traveller's hats. Most obviously a missionary … [Click Below for Full Description]
