Selden, J (John)
No Place: No Publisher, 1680. Leather. Poor/No Jacket. No publisher or printer given. 1618 but actually 1680 (see ESTC). Full leather. A3, I-XXII, (12), 491, (5) pp. Collated and complete, with a few pages misnumbered. Title printed in black ink only. A history of the practice of tithing, examining its origin and application in society, asserting that tithing originated in civil rather than canonical law (see Wikipedia). This work, while originally passing the censors, was eventually suppressed, as well as any response Selden could have made to his detractors (Encyclopedia Britannica). John Selden was a British scholar and politician, writing several works on both ancient English and Jewish laws, as well as other scholarly works. This copy was presumably printed in 1680, according to the ESTC, which gives the 1618 title as 'The Historie of Tythes,' and states that it was printed in red and black. POOR/FAIR condition. Ex-theological library. Label present at the foot of the spine, with several blindstamps throughout, as well as a few in ink. Front cover and first endpaper DETACHED but present. Moderate to heavy scuffing to the covers, with minor soiling, uneven moderate darkening and toning. Leather worn along the extremities, with a ¾ inch chip missing from the upper spine. Text block solid, with a few scattered lines in the margins. Previous owner's bookplate on the inside rear cover. Extensive summary/dissertation of the work, in ink, on the blank page preceding the title. Ownership signature present. Wing A2428A. ESTC S117082.

Matthaus Merian
Frankfurt, 1680. Mathias Merian the Elder (1593-1650) was one of the most prominent members of the leading print publishing family of 17th-century Germany, known throughout Europe for his engravings of cityscapes and landscapes, his scientific books, and his editions of the noted series of travel books, the "Great Voyages".Born and trained in Basel, Switzerland in the early 1600's he began studying drawing, engraving and etching in Zurich with engraver Friedrich Meyer. Merian joined the Frankfurt publishing house of Johann Theodor de Bry in 1616 and, the following year, he married de Bry's daughter Maria Magdalena. Merian gained his greatest acclaim as head of the family publishing house following the death of his father-in-law in 1623. He rapidly and almost single-handedly built up the house to become one of the most important in Europe, etching most of the plates himself until about 1645, when he increasingly relied upon the help of a growing staff of assistants and pupils, among them Wenceslaus Hollar, Rudolf and Conrad Meyer of Zurich, and his sons Matthaus and Casper."Topographia Germaniae" was published around 1680 in partnership with Zeiller Martin who wrote the text. "Topographia Germaniae" was one of the larges and most comprehensive publishing's of its time with engravings of major European cities and historically important locations, each expertly engraved by Merian and his sons. In total, Topographia Germaniae is comprised of 30 volumes with more than 2,000 individually detailed engravings with maps and views of cities, towns, castles, fortresses and monasteries … [Click Below for Full Description]

Wit, Frederick de (1630-1706)
?Magnae Tartariae Magni Mogolis Imperii Iaponiae et Chinae Nova Descriptio?. Copper engraving published 1680 by Frederick de Wit in Amsterdam. Original hand colouring. Size: 44 x 55 cm.Map of Northeastern Asia, extending from the Island of Formosa, the Ganges and the eastern part of the Caspian Sea to Yedso, Tartaria, Siberia and Molgomzaia in Russian Asia in the North. No western exploration has yet reached Asia?s northeast coast, and we see a conjectural rounded coastline. Plinius? Tazata Island appears north of the Arctic Circle, and a sense of Tartary?s mountain ranges is given, but the topography is by no means accurate. There is geographical and historical commentary throughout Tartary. The Great Wall is shown pictorially, and many cities are named in China and northern India. The fictional Lake Chiang Mai is still shown as the source of the great rivers of Southeast Asia. Yedso (Hokkaido) is shown in a very limited way, with partial coastlines. A very interesting map, from a period when Europe?s knowledge of China has greatly improved, but the depiction of northern and central Asia remains largely speculative.Decorated with finely engraved mountains and trees.Price ?525,-.

Le Grand, Antonii (Antoine Le Grand)
Londini (London): M. Clark, 1680. Fourth edition (Editio quarta). Hardcover. g. Large octavo. [4], XVI, [18], 731, [1]pp. Original spotted calf, with gold lettering and tooling on spine. Raised bands. All edges red. Marbled endpapers. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Antoine Le Grand. Decorative initials. Originally published in 1672, this work was a milestone in the history of philosophy, as it introduced and promoted Cartesianism in Great Britain. Cartesianism is a philosophical doctrine (or school) of René Descartes, often regarded as the first thinker to emphasize the use of reason to develop the natural sciences. For him the philosophy was a thinking system that embodied all knowledge, and expressed it in this way: Cartesians view the mind as being wholly separate from the corporeal body. Sensation and the perception of reality are thought to be the source of untruth and illusions, with the only reliable truths to be had in the existence of a metaphysical mind. Such a mind can perhaps interact with a physical body, but it does not exist in the body, nor even in the same physical plane as the body. In general, Cartesian thought divides the world into three areas of existence: - 1) that inhabited by the physical body (matter), - 2) that inhabited by the mind, - 3) that inhabited by God. According to Anthony Wood, a contemporary of Le Grand's and an historian at Oxford, Antoine Le Grand's "Institutio Philosophiae, secundum principia Domini Renati Descartes" was a "must read" at Cambridge (Wood, 1691, p. 620). Dolinar (Joan)
Slnd (circa 1680) - Gravure originale sur cuivre : 41x35 cm. On y lit : "Valencienne. Peu courant.

Giovanni Battista FALDA (Valduggia, Novara, 1643; Rome, 1678)
"From the ""Le Fontane di Roma""a beautiful collection of the fountains of Rome and its environs, published by G.G. de Rossi, about 1690, in four books. Minor age-toning to the paper, especially the first and third pamphlet, with an occasional light instance of foxing or staining. Altogether, a very good to near fine copy, handsomely bound, of these three scarce 1680 pamphlets, important salvos in the late seventeenth century 'new media' war of printed communications to sway public opinion in Britain. ~QQQ~ These three 1680 pamphlets were written by Sir Roger L'Estrange (1616-1704), an English pamphleteer, author and staunch defender of Royalist claims. The most prolific commentator on the Popish Plot, L'Estrange was the press censor during the reigns of Charles II and James II. L'Estrange was interested in the working of the London book trade at this time, and as one who did not believe there was a Popish Plot, wrote prolifically in order publicly to cast doubt upon it. L'Estrange's writings provide us with valuable insights into the production, dissemination, and reception of political opinion in this period. The Popish Plot was a fictitious conspiracy … [Click Below for Full Description]

Matthaus Merian
Mathias Merian the Elder (1593-1650) was one of the most prominent members of the leading print publishing family of 17th-century Germany, known throughout Europe for his engravings of cityscapes and landscapes, his scientific books, and his editions of the noted series of travel books, the “Great Voyages.”Born and trained in Basel , Switzerland, in the early 1600’s he began studying drawing, engraving and etching in Zurich with engraver Friedrich Meyer. Merian joined the Frankfurt publishing house of Johann Theodor de Bry in 1616 and, the following year, he married de Bry’s daughter Maria Magdalena. Merian gained his greatest acclaim as head of the family publishing house following the death of his father-in-law in 1623. He rapidly and almost single-handedly built up the house to become one of the most important in Europe, etching most of the plates himself until about 1645, when he increasingly relied upon the help of a growing staff of assistants and pupils, among them Wenceslaus Hollar, Rudolf and Conrad Meyer of Zurich, and his sons Matthaus and Casper.“Topographia Germaniae” was published around 1680 in partnership with Zeiller Martin who wrote the text. “Topographia Germaniae” was one of the larges and most comprehensive publishing’s of its time with engravings of major European cities and historically important locations, each expertly engraved by Merian and his sons. In total, Topographia Germaniae is comprised of 30 volumes with more than 2,000 individually detailed engravings with maps and views of cities, towns, castles, fortresses and monasteries. This engraving … [Click Below for Full Description]
