Amsterdam c. 1680 - Double-page engraved map, hand-coloured in outline. Dimensions: 505 × 605 mm (20 × 24 inches). North is orientated to the right, the map shows the course of the River Rhine and valley from Basle to Strasburg. Topography and major cities are shown in fine profile. A simple map title and column style mileage scale complete the map. Koeman 1:408

[MAGELLAN] DE L'ARMESSIN, Nicolas
Np, 1680. Very good.. Woodcut engraving, 180 x 130 mm. From Isaac Bullart's "Académie des Sciences et des Arts..." (François Foppens: Brussels, 1682 & 1695), by the printmaker Nicolas de L'Armessin (signed bottom right). Magellan's expedition was the first to cross the Pacific and the first circumnavigation of the globe. The modern map of the world is witness to this epoch-making event, the name "Pacific" having been bestowed on the great ocean by Magellan himself, while his point of entry is still commemorated by the Strait which bears his name. "No other single voyage has ever added so much to the dimension of the world" (Spate). The expedition under Magellan set out from San Lucar on 10 August, 1519, in five vessels manned by 265 men, with the intention of sailing westward to the Moluccas. After a suppressed mutiny and a difficult winter in Patagonia, on 18 October, 1520, the ships passed through the strait now named in Magellan's honour, and sailed westward to the Philippines. There Magellan was killed in a skirmish with natives, and further adventures in the East Indies depleted the venture through disease and desertion. Only one ship with eighteen men, under Juan Sebastian Del Cano, landed at Seville on 6 September, 1522. Shortly thereafter all of the crew who could travel went to Valladolid to report to Charles V, including, Antonio Pigafetta., one of the chroniclers of the voyage whose account did not appear until 1525, in Paris, and was not wholly published until the late eighteenth century."There was none of the prophetic mysticism of Columbus in the makeup of t … [Click Below for Full Description]

SANSON, Nicolas
Paris 1680 - This map of southeast Asia and the East Indies is essentially two maps on a single sheet. The map on the left depicts the northern portion of the India Ganges region, representing Burma (Myanmar), Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos, while the map of the right depicts the southern portion and includes the Malay Peninsula, Singapore, Sumatra. The most interesting feature is the Lacus Chimay (Chimay Lake), the mythical lake located in northern Burma which was believed to be the source of the river system in Southeast Asia. Important towns and cities are identified with beautifully rendered topography depicted in profile. Map is in very good condition with some toning along original centerfold, which shows repairs on verso. Minimal foxing. Nicolas Sanson (1600-1667) is considered the founder of the French school of cartography. In reaction to the prevailing trend of Dutch lavishness, Sanson favored minimal details, focusing rather on accurate cartography than ornament. This map is a fine example of his work. Map. Uncolored copper plate engraving. Image measures 7.5" x 10". 1680.

?Magnae Tartariae Magni Mogolis Imperii Iaponiae et Chinae Nova Descriptio?. Copper engraving published 1680 by Frederick de Wit in Amsterdam. Original hand colouring. Size: 44 x 55 cm.Map of Northeastern Asia, extending from the Island of Formosa, the Ganges and the eastern part of the Caspian Sea to Yedso, Tartaria, Siberia and Molgomzaia in Russian Asia in the North. No western exploration has yet reached Asia?s northeast coast, and we see a conjectural rounded coastline. Plinius? Tazata Island appears north of the Arctic Circle, and a sense of Tartary?s mountain ranges is given, but the topography is by no means accurate. There is geographical and historical commentary throughout Tartary. The Great Wall is shown pictorially, and many cities are named in China and northern India. The fictional Lake Chiang Mai is still shown as the source of the great rivers of Southeast Asia. Yedso (Hokkaido) is shown in a very limited way, with partial coastlines. A very interesting map, from a period when Europe?s knowledge of China has greatly improved, but the depiction of northern and central Asia remains largely speculative.Decorated with finely engraved mountains and trees.Price ?525,-.

VERI (Miguel).
Barcinone, ex Typis Antonii Lacavalleria, s.d. (c.1680). - Petit in-8. 48pp. Palau, 360448.

MAP OF CRETE?Insula Candia Ejusque Fortificatio. ?Copper engraving by Frederick de Wit, published in Amsterdam c. 1680, with original hand colouring. Size: 46 x 54,5 cm.One of the most decorative maps of Crete, based on the map by S?bastian de Pontault Beaulieu, a French military engineer who had mapped the fortifications of many Mediterranean islands. His map of Crete was published in 1674, only five years after Crete had fallen to the Ottomans after a 21-year siege (the longest siege in history). The Siege of Candia [modern Heraklion], the capital of Crete, was the central event of the sixth Turkish?Venetian War, better known as Cretan War, or War of Candia. It was a conflict between the Republic of Venice and her allies (the Knights of Malta, the Papal States, French volunteers, and pirates from Mani) against the Ottoman Empire and the Barbary States, fought over the Venetian possession of Crete. The war lasted from 1645 to 1669, and was fought in Dalmatia, Crete, and in numerous naval engagements in the Aegean Sea.On the map the seas around the island are filled with galleons and galleys representing this epic struggle. Above the map the title is on a banner held aloft by putti, and the corners have plans of the towns and fortifications of Chania and Heraklion. Under the map are plans of the fortifications of Spinalonga, Rethymno, Tylissos [Thine] and Suda.Price: ?1.450,-.

JANSSON, Jan.
Oxford: Jan Jansson van Waesbergen, Moses Pitt & Stephan Swert, c.1680. Coloured. 470 x 550mm. A map of Russia after Isaac Massa (1586-1643), a Dutch grain trader who became an envoy to the Kremlin and collected maps of Russian territory at great persoanl risk. It was originally published by Jan Jansson in 1636 and reengraved the following year with a title and dedication to Benart. After his death the plates passed to his son-in-law, Jan Jansson van Waesbergen. He went into partnership with two English publishers, Pitt and Swart, to produce a twelve-volume 'English Atlas' to compete with Blaeu's. Between 1680 and 1683 four volumes of the atlas and the text for the fifth were printed in Oxford, but the mounting costs were too much. Production ceased and for a time Pitt was locked up in the Fleet Prison for debt, making this state of the map quite uncommon. The differences are van Waesbergen & Pitt's names as publishers and a grid engraved over the map.
