A beautiful example of Frederick de Wit's c. 1680 map of Tartary. The map covers from just north of the Arctic Circle to Formosa south to the the Bay of Bengal and Formosa, and from the Caspian Sea to Hokkaido or Yedso. Although parts of China, Japan, and northern India were somewhat mapped, most of northeastern Asia was fully unknown to western cartographers. The continent has here been given a curious rounded form that may be suggestive of a northeasterly route to Asia. Both the Great Wall of China and the Gobi Desert are clearly delineated. At the western edge of the map the overlarge Caspain Sea is erroneously mapped on an east-west rather than north-south axis. This map was published both independently and as part of various complied and composite atlases. Copperplate, very good condition. Amsterdam Amsterdam Dimensioni in mm. 555 X 440

Gyllenstierna.]
Stockholm, Niclas Wankijff, 1680. 4:o. (8) s. Liten fläck på titelbladet. Tagen ur band. Ur Ericsbergs bibliotek.

TAVERNIER, Jean Baptiste
A. Goodbid and J. Playford, 1680. Map. Copperplate engraving with hand-coloring. Expertly restored and lined, margins missing. Image measures 14.25 x 20.75" This rare and unusual map of Japan features a graphic illustration of the islands with pictorial depictions of mountains and forts. An inset of Tunquin (North Vietnam) depicts the river system centered on Hanoi and the Gulf on Tonkin. The Sea of Korea and the country's tip can be seen below the inset. Moses Pitt, a British bookseller and publisher, released this English edition of Tavernier's original French map in 1680. The map has been intensively repaired and has some stains, but it remains a good copy of this hard-to-find map. Jean Baptiste Tavernier (1605-1689) was a famous French traveler who voyaged most extensively in India and Persia. His two volumes of "Les Six Voyages de Jean-Baptiste Tavernier" document his travels and commercial contacts. While he never made it to Japan, this scarce map evidences the wide range of contacts he made during his voyages.

ALLAIS, Jean Baptiste.
Becker, Practice of letters 91; Berlin Kat. 5117; Muller, Cat. Calligr., 1; Marzoli 56. First edition of a very elaborate basic writing course and copy book, minutely explaining the composition of the various calligraphic hands (fran?oises, b?tardes, financieres), as well as pen decorations and drawings. The engraved title-page reads, "L'art d'?crire ou Le moyen d'exceler en cet art sans maistre" (suggesting a break with the ancient tradition of learning by apprenticeship or under a school master) and spells the author's name "Allais", while the letterpress title-page spells it "Alais". The course was designed by Jean Baptiste Allais, dit le Beaulieu, and engraved by Louis Senault, who was a leading writing master in his own right and therefore ideally suited to engrave his colleague's writing book. Some copies were issued with 12 letterpress leaves and many copies are missing letterpress leaves or plates.Lacking five engraved leaves and browned along the edges. [Attributes: First Edition]

M. Clark, Londini (London) 1680 - Large octavo. [4], XVI, [18], 731, [1]pp. Original spotted calf, with gold lettering and tooling on spine. Raised bands. All edges red. Marbled endpapers. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Antoine Le Grand. Decorative initials. Originally published in 1672, this work was a milestone in the history of philosophy, as it introduced and promoted Cartesianism in Great Britain. Cartesianism is a philosophical doctrine (or school) of René Descartes, often regarded as the first thinker to emphasize the use of reason to develop the natural sciences. For him the philosophy was a thinking system that embodied all knowledge, and expressed it in this way: Cartesians view the mind as being wholly separate from the corporeal body. Sensation and the perception of reality are thought to be the source of untruth and illusions, with the only reliable truths to be had in the existence of a metaphysical mind. Such a mind can perhaps interact with a physical body, but it does not exist in the body, nor even in the same physical plane as the body. In general, Cartesian thought divides the world into three areas of existence: - 1) that inhabited by the physical body (matter), - 2) that inhabited by the mind, - 3) that inhabited by God. According to Anthony Wood, a contemporary of Le Grand's and an historian at Oxford, Antoine Le Grand's "Institutio Philosophiae, secundum principia Domini Renati Descartes" was a "must read" at Cambridge (Wood, 1691, p. 620). Further attesting to the attention it attracted, Jean Robert Armogathe has detailed how the 1678 edition of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Amsterdam. Molto decorativa. Decorative map of Italy, Sicily, Corsica and Sardinia, published by Frederick De Wit in Amsteradam, the first time in 1680, and reprinted several times The present example - with the notice of De Wit's privilege, which was granted on October 27, 1689 - is a final state of the map, dating about 1720. The map includes a detailed cartouche, numerous sailing ships and a naval battle of the Gulf of Naples. "R. Borri "L'Italia nelle antiche carte " (2011), scheda 149" 560 490mm

Bellissimo esemplare in coloritura coeva. A nice map of the islands of Sardinia and Corsica. The coastal information is fairly accurate but much of the interior topography is less precise. The title cartouche features the arms of the Kingdoms of Sardinia and Corsica with their characteristic symbols for the defeated Moors who had once ruled the islands. Original color, good conditions.
