[Click Below for Full Description]

BORELLI GIOVANNI ALFONSO.
Roma, Angelo Bernabò, 1680-1681. Due volumi in-4°; 6 cc., 376 pp., 6 cc. e 14 tavv. - 2 cc., 520 pp. e 4 tavv. ripiegate; legatura coeva in tutta pergamena, titolo manoscritto al dorso. Esemplare genuino con qualche lieve brunitura e macchia marginale. Prima edizione. "After Descartes, Borelli was the principal founder of the iatrophysical school, one of the two opposing seventeenth-century medical philosophies that grew out of an increasing concern with the function as well as the structure of human anatomy. Inspired by Harvey's mathematical demon … [Click Below for Full Description]

After studying literature at the University of Bologna, Cantelli took a position as secretary to the Marquis Obizzi de Ferrara. Eventually Cantelli relocated to Venice where developed an interest in cartography. He later traveled to Paris in the company of the French ambassador where became acquainted with the French cartographer Guillaume Sanson, as well as his contemporaries Jacques-Andre Duval and Michel-Antoin Baudrand. It was most likely the influence of these innovative French cartographers that inspired Cantellis careful and meticulous approach, in which he based his cartography not just on earlier maps, but also very much in the French style upon accounts written by travelers and merchants regarding actual travel to foreign lands. Back in Italy, Cantelli took service Count Rinieri Marescotti, with whom he traveled extensively throughout Italy, becoming in the process acquainted with the Italian publisher Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi. Mattioli, a true renaissance man, described 100 new species of plants. He also was the first to observe and describe cat allergy and he became the personal doctor of Ferdinand II, and Maximillian II of Austria. The present work, first published in Latin in 1544, contains comments upon, if not criticism of the Materia medica of Pedanius Dioscorides, the influentual Greek-Roman pharmacologist, as well as a wealth of new information on herbs, mainly, and many other objects that were thought to have an influence on men's health, e.g. numerous species of fish and shell-fish, shells, insects, reptiles, amphibians, mammals, etc., etc. Pages 599-636 deal with "Chymie". As Mattioli included some plants of no known medical use he could be regarded as the father of modern botany (i.e. botany as a science as such). Generally speaking, this late "Atlas Novus" map by Jansson of the Alsace region of France is a re-issue of the 1675 "Atlas Maior" but without text. North is orientated to the right, the map shows the course of the River Rhine and valley from Basle to Strasburg. Topography and major cities are shown in fine profile. A simple map title and column style mileage scale complete the map. Koeman 1:408
