[Click Below for Full Description]

BORELLI GIOVANNI ALFONSO.
Roma, Angelo Bernabò, 1680-1681. Due volumi in-4°; 6 cc., 376 pp., 6 cc. e 14 tavv. - 2 cc., 520 pp. e 4 tavv. ripiegate; legatura coeva in tutta pergamena, titolo manoscritto al dorso. Esemplare genuino con qualche lieve brunitura e macchia marginale. Prima edizione. "After Descartes, Borelli was the principal founder of the iatrophysical school, one of the two opposing seventeenth-century medical philosophies that grew out of an increasing concern with the function as well as the structure of human anatomy. Inspired by Harvey's mathematical demon … [Click Below for Full Description]

Excellent detail throughout and a nice title carouche. - vita of the artist: Giacomo Cantelli da Vignola (1643 - 1695) was an important Italian cartographer and engraver Cantelli was born in Montorsello, near Vignola Italy to a prominent local family. After studying literature at the University of Bologna, Cantelli took a position as secretary to the Marquis Obizzi de Ferrara. Eventually Cantelli relocated to Venice where developed an interest in cartography. He later traveled to Paris in the company of the French ambassador where became acquainted with the French cartographer Guillaume Sanson, as well as his contemporaries Jacques-Andre Duval and Michel-Antoin Baudrand. It was most likely the influence of these innovative French cartographers that inspired Cantellis careful and meticulous approach, in which he based his cartography not just on earlier maps, but also very much in the French style upon accounts written by travelers and merchants regarding actual travel to foreign lands. Back in Italy, Cantelli took service Count Rinieri Marescotti, with whom he traveled extensively throughout Italy, becoming in the process acquainted with the Italian publisher Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi. Matthiole, P. A. [G.] (Mattioli)
- Lyon, Iean-Baptiste De Ville, 1680. Folio (35.5 x 23.0 cm). Half title, title (in black and red, with large engraved allegoric vignette). xcv, [x], 636, [xxxiii] pp. Several engraved head- tail- and letterpieces; large, engraved portrait of Mattioli; nearly fifteenhundred woodcuts, mainly of herbs, in the text. Contemporary full tree calf. Spine with six raised bands. Rich gilt compartments with floral vignettes. Burgundy morocco label with gilt title. Board edges wit gilt dentelles. Marbled endpapers. Edges dyed red.l Rare edition of this well-illustrated and influential work by the Siennese naturalist, botanist, and medical doctor Pietro Andrea Gregorio Mattioli (1501-1577), or (in French), Matthiole. Mattioli, a true renaissance man, described 100 new species of plants. He also was the first to observe and describe cat allergy and he became the personal doctor of Ferdinand II, and Maximillian II of Austria. The present work, first published in Latin in 1544, contains comments upon, if not criticism of the Materia medica of Pedanius Dioscorides, the influentual Greek-Roman pharmacologist, as well as a wealth of new information on herbs, mainly, and many other objects that were thought to have an influence on men's health, e.g. numerous species of fish and shell-fish, shells, insects, reptiles, amphibians, mammals, etc., etc. Pages 599-636 deal with "Chymie". As Mattioli included some plants of no known medical use he could be regarded as the father of modern botany (i.e. botany as a science as such). For this edition, Antoine du Pinet (1510-1555) included additional inf … [Click Below for Full Description]

VERI (Miguel).
Barcinone, ex Typis Antonii Lacavalleria, s.d. (c.1680). - Petit in-8. 48pp. Palau, 360448.

Athanasius( Kestler) Kircher 1602-1680
- Amsterdam: Ex Officin‰ Janssonio-Waesbergiana, 1680 Folio 9.4 x 14.25 in *4, A-Z4, Aa-Ii4. First and only edition. ÒThus in the most varied branches of science Kircher played the role of pioneer. Even medicine received his attention. His scientific activities brought him into correspondence with scholars laboring in the most different fields, as the numerous volumes of his extant letters show. It is to his inventive mind that we owe one of the earliest of our counting machines: the speaking-tube and ¾olian harp were perfected by him. He was also the inventor of the magic lantern [depicted in this volume] which has since been brought to such perfection and is today almost indispensable. [All of KircherÕs inventions are illustrated in the present work, including three different depictions of magic lanterns.]Ó (CE) ÒThis work, edited by one of KircherÕs pupils, Johann Stephan Kestler, is a codification of KircherÕs observations and experiments across the entire spectrum of his researches in physics. Naturally there are large sections on light and shadow, magnetism, acoustics, and music; but there are also experiments and observations in hydraulics, alchemy, and a myriad of other topics. This compendium was perhaps a response to entreaties from KircherÕs fellow scientists, who appreciated his keen observations and experiments but did not care to wade through some forty volumes to glean them. The book is an example of what KircherÕs writings could have been like at the hands of a good editor. Kircher died the year this book was published, and it is uncertain to what exten … [Click Below for Full Description]
