Beverland, Adrian.
1680. 8vo. (12), 223, (5) pp. With woodcut printer's device to t. p. Contemp. calf with giltstamped label to prettily gilt spine (slightly rubbed). Leading edges gilt; marbled endpapers. First edition; rare. "One of his learned obsceneties" (cf. Bilder-Lexikon). Beverland (1650-1716), one of the most colourful figures of late 17th-century scholarship, had to leave Leiden University after creating a scandal hit with his treatise on original sin ("Peccatum originale", 1778). He proceeded to "live in England and write many pieces of filthy poetry" (cf. Rosenkranz, Hdb. einer allg. Geschichte der Poesie II, 30). An English translation was published in 1905 as "The Law Concerning Draped Virginity: An Academical Study". None of his works was banned by the Church, a fact which Reusch (II, 862) interprets as a sign of the increasingly desultory character of Roman censorship in the 18th century. - Front hinge beginning to split, otherwise a very appealing copy from the library of Armand Jules de Rohan (1695-1762), Duke and Archbishop of Reims (and uncle of Cardinal Rohan, notorious for the so-called Affair of the Diamond Necklace), with his engr. armorial bookplate on front pastedown. Brunet I, 837. Ebert 2076. Bilder-Lexikon II, 126. Gay/Lemonnyer I, 819. Clément, Biblioth. curieuse III, 270.

ECOLE PARFAITE DES OFFICIERS E BOUCHE

Paris: G. Quinet, 1680. First Complete Edition in French. 16mo, pp. [4], 323; [2], 336; [1], 297; [1] 283; [1] 226. Printed with woodcut initials and head pieces. Bound in contemporary calf, with modern rebacking, blank marginal tears to three leaves in volume 1 (without any loss of text]. Includes the stamp of the Netherby Library on the title pages, with the ownership signature of one of the baronets Graham of Netherby, Cumberland. Two volumes have the ownership signatures of "Su Fletchers Booke" and the same hand has copied two speeches from the tragedy Roland by Philippe Quinault (1635-1688). This is the first complete edition in French (this was preceeded by a partial edition of six novels, translated by Antoine de Methel and published in 1656 (Palau 379922). Then in 1651 and 1661, French novelist and playright Paul Scarron (1610-1660) borrowed the theme of three of the novels in his Roman Comique and his Nouvelles tragi-comiques. This first complete translation is quite rare, Northwestern and a UC Santa Barbara have just volumes 1 & 2, while the only complete set seems to be at the Library of Congress. Palau 379924; Cioranescu 65450. Wilson notes: The life of Maria de Zayas (1590-1669) is wrapped in mystery. Her father was a Captain in the infantry and a member of the military order of Santiago, thus she belonged to a distinguished Spanish family ... We do know that she played an active part in the cultural life of Madrid, participating in literary academies and gatherings, writing encomiastic poems for her friends, and receiving high praise from such luminaries as L … [Click Below for Full Description]

Fioravanti Leonardo
In Venetia, appresso Giacomo Zattoni, 1680. [Click Below for Full Description]

Robert Filmer
London: Walter Davis Book-binder, 1680 A very good copy of the 1st edition of Robert Filmer's important political work on government. Robert Filmer (c1588-1653) was a political theorist and is best known for Patriarcha which was probably begun in 1620, but was not published until after his death. It is now seen as an important work, which set the framework for debate on forms of government. This copy has been newly rebound in half leather with marbled boards and with title label to spine. New endpapers have been added and the frontispiece, which was missing, added in facsimile.
