HEYLYN, P
T Basset, The George in Fleet Street, London 1680 - Original bound Half Leather HB, 634 pages with marbled paper sides; black leather label on the spine; tooled title and lines on the spine; text block - laid paper, printed text. The first edition was published in 1641. The book has been fully professionally restored recently including cleaning, text block repairs, lining with hand-made paper, with other paper repairs carried out using Japanese tissue and wheat starch paste including toning. The orginal structure of the binding was altered from a tight block (leather attached directly to the spine of the text block) to a hollow structure to prevent the orginal leather from flexing while the book is open and also to improve the opening of the book. Finally rebacked using calf skin dyed to a suitable colour and the orginal leather being reattached to the spine. There is an index added to the rear in pen in Victorian times and a number of inscriptions appear on the front pastedown. Frederick de WIT (1630 - 1706)
Beautiful map of the continent filled with details typical of the late 17th Century. The Nile appears according to the ancient pattern, arising from the two lakes of Zaire and Zafflan. De Wit's depiction of the southeastern coast includes numerous deep inlets and several rivers and lakes at the southern tip not s … [Click Below for Full Description]

Frederick de WIT (1630 - 1706)
Bellissimo esemplare in coloritura coeva. A nice map of the islands of Sardinia and Corsica. The coastal information is fairly accurate but much of the interior topography is less precise. The title cartouche features the arms of the Kingdoms of Sardinia and Corsica with their characteristic symbols for the defeated Moors who had once ruled the islands. Original color, good conditions. ROGGEVEEN, Arent
[c.1680], Amsterdam, - Panama Double-page engraved chart with added hand colour. First large-scale Dutch sea chart of the Panamanian Coastline, between Bahia St. Blaes and and Punta de Naes, centered on Nombre de Dios and Porta Bella - published in Roggeveen's exceedingly rare sea pilot 'Het Brandende Veen'. Roggeveen, born in Delshaven, came to Middleburg, the seat of both the Dutch East and West India Companies, in 1658. He worked for both companies teaching the art of navigation and helped to maintain their collections of hydrographic manuscripts and charts, including Spanish portolans of the West Indies. In the mid-1660s, assisted by his access to these collections, Roggeveen embarked upon compiling a series of large-scale charts of the North American coastline, West Indies, and, later, West Africa. Many of his charts are based upon the earlier large-scale work of Hessel Gerritsz and Joan Vingboons, both cartographers for the Dutch East and West India Companies, but Roggeveen's work was the first to show the whole coastline of North America and the Caribbean. He called this pilot 'Het Brandende Veen' or 'The Burning Fen'; a pun on his name, as 'veen' means 'fen', and a heap of burning fen represents a fire on the coast to guide or warn ships. The first edition of the atlas was published in 1675 by Pieter Goos, however, due to the death of Goos in the same year, and that of Roggeveen four years later, a second edition would not be published until 1680, by which time the plates had been acquired by the chart dealer Jacobus Robijn. Robijn went on to republish the second ed … [Click Below for Full Description]

BAILLY JACQUES (1629-1670).
Roma, da Matteo Greg. Rossi, L'Anno 1680. Legatura coeva in tutta pergamena. Samuelle Iacomini. In q … [Click Below for Full Description]
